Jim Bridger: 1825• Jim Bridger was a trapper who was also
an explorer. • On one of his expeditions he thought he
had finally reached the Pacific Ocean because the water was vast and extremely salty. Later he found out it was just a very salty lake – the Great Salt Lake.
• He opened a trading post – Fort Bridger – in Wyoming. This trading post helped countless pioneers as they traveled west to Utah, California and Oregon. They could rest and get new supplies.

Pioneers Enter the Valley:
July 24, 1847• After a long journey across the United States, Mormon pioneers reached Salt Lake Valley
• Many of Utah’s cities today were founded by the early pioneers to Utah
• A grid system was used to lay out streets – this still sets Utah apart from many other areas

Utah Becomes a State:
January 4, 1896• After almost fifty years, Utah finally went from being a territory to a state
• Utah tried SEVEN times before finally becoming a state
• Roadblocks to Utah becoming a state included: political, economic, education, and religious differences in opinion

Daniel Jackling: 1903
• 1903 – He developed the open pit mining method and began mining copper from Bingham Canyon.
• Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Mine has produced more copper than any mine in history - about 18.7 million tons.
• The pit is so large that you can see the pit from space.
