• The Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR), is the 18th Tiger Reserve of the country and is the only Tiger Reserve in Bihar, which is located in the northern most part of the West ChamparanDistrict.

• Declared national park in 1990.

• Has 464 Sq Km Core area and 419 sq km Buffer Area which totals 880 sq km area.

History• Valmiki nagar gets its name from

great saint Maharshi Valmiki who supposed to have resided in this area during the times of epic mythology Ramayana.

• This park in the Indian side shares international boundary with Nepal’s Royal Chitwan National Park

• As biodiversity hotspot this park is home to 65 rivers and rivulets along with natural lakes.

History• In the year 1911-12 king George V

visited this area and stayed for 21 days.

• A Special rail route for 43 Km ( Raxaul to Bhiknathori) was laid in jungle which is still operational

• Special rest house and a village set up for the royal visit still exist in the forest till day.

• King George hunted 15 tigers in 21 days.

Wildlife in the ParkThe main fauna of Valmiki Tiger Reserve consists of Tiger, Leopard, Fishing Cat, Rhino, Elephants ,Indian Bison, Bear, Crocodiles, Chital, Sambar, Hog Deer, Black Buck, Gaur, Sloth Bear, Langoor and Rhesus Monkey,

Birding at Valmiki Tiger Reserve• At present 241 bird species have been reported from

VTR. Some of the interesting birds of VTR are Nepal Khaleej pheasant, Three-Toed Quail, Flycatcher, Grey Shrike, Green Willow Warbler, Tree Pipit, White eye, Green barbet, Waders, ibises, Storks, Pitta, Plovers, Snipes, Pied Hornbill, Emerald Dove.

• There are five types of Green Pigeons and Purple wood Pigeon found in VTR.

• In the night several Owls, Owlets, Nightjars, etc can be easily sighted.

Reptiles at Valmiki Tiger Reserve• The reptiles which are commonly

found in VTR are python, Cobra, King

cobra, Krait, Banded krait, domuha

snake (sand boa), etc. Among

aquatic reptiles crocodiles, otters

(water cat), Ghariyal, monitor

lizard, etc. are found in VTR. Good

number of crocodiles are found near

Belahwa Village which is adjacant to

the VTR. Ghariyals are found in river

Gandak.

Butterflies Paradise• The Jungle Of Vtr Abounds In Various Kinds Of

Moth, Caterpillars And Butterflies. Some Common Butterflies Like Common Mormon, Great Mormon, Glassy Tiger, Great Egg Fly, Club Beak, Grey Pansy, Lime Butterfly.

Plant Diversity • As per champion and seth

classification there are seven forest types found in VTR which makes VTR a special destination for nature lovers.

Other attractions

• BHIKNATOHARI :- A scenic spot located in northern part of Park gives a clear view of the snow capped Himalayas and the Annapurna peak in the winters

• The Hunting bunglow of King George V exists here .

• SUMESHWAR TREK :- Located inside the park Sumeshwar Hill is at 2884 ft above sea level and is home to beautiful water bodies and offers excellent view of Himalayan peaks.

Beyond wilderness and wildlife• Bhitarhwa ashram : This is the place from where

Gandhi Ji Started his movement against Indigo Plantation.( Champaran Movement)

• Lauria/ Nandan Garh : Archeological excavation Sight has Ashokan pillar and Buddhist Stupa.

• Kesharia : on Excavation of Mound ASI has found one of the largest Buddhist StupaHidden inside mound.

• Artisan wells: This area has lot of water bodies and rivers few of them are made up of artisan well ( water comes out with pressure from earth making it fresh water source)

Anthropological heritage • Tribes

a) Tharu : women dominated tribes, native of this area are adept in basket weaving and other handicrafts.

b) Gond/ Santhal were brought in this area by British for hard labor who now reside here maintaining their customs and tradition.

c) Visits to the settlement enhances experience and appreciation of their self suffciency.
