Se há uma classe que discorda da afir-mação de que “a vida começa aos 40”, essa é, sem dúvida, a dos atores de Hollywood. Na principal indústria ci-

nematográfica do planeta, basta chegar às quatro décadas para os tidos “bons papéis” simplesmente saírem de cena. E isso aconte-ce até com os mais renomados. Durante a ce-rimônia do Globo de Ouro, em janeiro deste ano, Amy Poehler, uma das apresentadoras da noite, chegou a brincar com o assunto. Segun-do ela, Patricia Arquette, de 46 anos, do filme Boyhood – que levou 12 anos para ser filmado –, é a maior prova de que “ainda há bons pa-péis para atrizes de 40 anos, desde que você se-ja contratada antes dos 40.”

Obviamente, a regra não vale para todos. Há exceções, e o brasileiro Rodrigo Santoro é uma delas. O galã, que fez fama na TV e des-de 1998 dedica-se ao cinema, principalmente

internacional, completará quatro décadas de vida no dia 22 de agosto deste ano e vive seu melhor momento em Hollywood. Afinal, não é todo dia que um ator é convidado para vi-ver Jesus Cristo no remake de um dos maiores clássicos de todos os tempos, Ben-Hur, de 1959, vencedor de 11 Oscars.

“A sensação é de uma responsabilidade do tamanho do mundo, literalmente”, confessa o brasileiro, no alto de seu 1,90 metro. “Só de pensar na oportunidade de vivenciar, de com-preender e de me aproximar um pouco da ex-

periência do que Jesus passou é algo realmente inexplicável. Não é só a honra de fazer o papel, é uma experiência absolutamente atípica, por-que se trata de um arquétipo muito poderoso, com um simbolismo bastante forte. Eu ainda não estou nem pronto para dizer o que sinto em relação a esse convite”, diz Santoro.

Pronto ou não, o fato é que os estúdios MGM e Paramount anunciaram que as filmagens do novo Ben-Hur, que será protagonizado por Jack Huston e deve ser lançado em 2016, já começa-ram. No início de fevereiro, Santoro até viajou à Itália para rodar sua participação. Porém, em março, ele embarcou para os Estados Unidos para mergulhar em outro grande projeto: Wes-tworld, nova série da HBO que terá no elenco o vencedor do Oscar Anthony Hopkins.

Inspirada no filme homônimo de 1973, a atra-ção é produzida por J.J. cinema, will complete four decades of life next August 22nd and is living his best mo-ment in Hollywood. After all, it is not ev-ery day that an actor is invited to live Jesus Christ in the remake of one of the great-est classics of all times, Ben-Hur, filmed in 1959, winner of 11 Oscars.

“The feeling is of a world’s size respon-sibility, literally”, the 6’2 feet tall Brazil-ian confesses. “Just the thought of the opportunity to live, comprehend and get a little closer to what Jesus experienced is something really inexplicable. It’s not on-ly an honor to play the role, it’s an atyp-ical experience because it deals with a very powerful archetype, with a great deal of symbolism. I’m not really ready yet to say what I feel in relation to this in-vitation”, says Santoro.

Ready or not, the fact is that the MGM and Paramount studios have announced that the remake of Ben-Hur, starring Jack Huston, has already begun and the film should be launched in 2016. At the begin-ning of February, Santoro actually traveled to Italy to film his participation. In March, he went to the United States to immerse in another great project: Westworld, a new HBO series that will have the Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins in the cast.

Inspired by the homonymous film from 1973, the attraction is produced by J.J. Abrams, the acclaimed director of the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises and creator of Lost, the series that definitively placed Santoro under the international spotlights. “We made the pilot last year. The channel ordered a complete season but we can’t re-veal details. The productions of the film and the series had to do some juggling to avoid conflict in the agenda so that it would be possible to do both. That’s the reason for the rush”, Santoro recalls.

Em Golpe Duplo, estrelado por Will Smith e que estreou em 12 de março, Santoro vive um milio-nário argentino dono de uma grande empresa de Fórmula 1 e que se torna o maior adversá-rio do protagonista nos negócios e no amor. A trama acompanha a vida de Nicky Spurgeon (Smith), vigarista profissional que passa a trei-nar uma bela aprendiz (Margot Robbie) na ar-te de roubar. O longa é dirigido pelos cineastas Glenn Ficarra e John Requa, os mesmos de O Golpista do Ano, filme de 2009 em que Santoro trabalhou com Jim Carrey e Ewan McGregor.

“Eu havia adorado trabalhar com os dois (cineastas), porque eles são ótimos, inteligen-tíssimos, abertos, gostam de improvisar. São artistas incríveis. Esse foi um ponto de parti-da muito simpático para fazer o filme”, avalia. “E é um gênero que me agrada muito, porque é thriller, drama, mas tem senso de humor. É uma mistura muito bacana”, completa Santoro. E, claro, tem o fato de contracenar com um dos maiores astros de Hollywood do momento. “O Will é um ator que eu sempre curti, que acho engraçado. Sempre gostei de ver os trabalhos dele. Aí ele fez À Procura da Felicidade (2006), um filme pelo qual passei a admirá-lo ainda

The plot accompa-nies the life of Nicky Spurgeon (Smith), a professional swindler who trains a beau-tiful apprentice (Margot Robbie) in the art of robbery. The feature-length film is directed by filmmakers Glenn Ficar-ra and John Requa, who also directed I Love You Phillip Morris, filmed in 2009, in which Santoro worked with Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. “I loved working with these two filmmakers because they are great, super-intelligent, open, and like to improvise. They’re incredible artists. This was a very pleasant starting point because it’s a thriller, a drama, but with a sense of humor. It’s a very cool mixture”, says Santoro. “And there is the opportuni-ty of interacting with one of the moment’s greatest Hollywood stars. Will is an ac-tor I always enjoyed, who I think is fun-ny. I’ve always liked to see his work. Then he made The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) and that made me admire him even more as an actor. There has always been an ad-miration and that made the experience of filming Focus even more marvelous”.

With singular energy and a contagious spirit, according to Santoro, Will Smith proved to be one of the most generous ac-tors with whom he has worked. “In the movies, we make the scene; I cover one side and someone covers the other. Ma-ny times the camera is pointed at you and not at your partner. Every time the cam-era wasn’t pointed at Will, he was there just the same, maybe even more then when he was on camera, trying to provoke me, encouraging me, all to help, to get the best out of me. I thought that was incredi-ble. It proved how much a partner he was in the scene, simply because he cares that the final scene be the best”.

that he becomes a charming 40-year-old will be an easy task. Besides from Focus, the polemic Jane Got a Gun, a western produc-tion starring Natalie Portman, that became famous for its several casting changes, will be released in August, one year later. For the Brazilian, this work represents anoth-er step in his career since it is the first time he plays a North American. “He is from the South of the United States and has Irish as-cendency. So much so that my character is named Fitchum, an Irish name that was chosen for an Irishman. I was selected for the role but, even so, the name remainned the same. This turned out to be an even greater challenge for me. I had to do a very strong accent. It was quite an adventure.”

In 2015, the launch of The 33 is also scheduled. It is the adaptation of the dra-matic episode that occurred in 2010, in which 33 Chilean miners were trapped in a mine for 69 days. Santoro is one of the protagonists, along with Antonio Ban-deras and Juliette Binoche. In addition, he will appear in the cinebiography of the soccer star Pelé, scheduled for the second semester. For all these reasons, it is easy to understand Santoro’s answer when asked if turning 40 bothers him. “If life begins at 40, I’m ready to start. I can say that I’m feeling very well”. •

De energia singular e astral contagiante, segundo Santoro, Will Smith mostrou-se um dos atores mais generosos com quem traba-lhou. “No cinema, quando a gente faz a cena, eu cubro um lado e alguém cobre o outro. En-tão, muitas vezes, a câmera está apontada para você e não para seu companheiro. Todas as ve-zes em que a câmera não estava apontada para Will, ele estava presente da mesma forma, tal-vez até mais do que com a câmera, tentando me provocar, me incentivando, tudo para ajudar, para arrancar de mim o melhor. Achei aquilo incrível, provou o quanto ele é parceiro de ce-na, simplesmente, porque está interessado que a cena final saia a melhor.”

E VEM MAIS POR AÍVer Santoro no cinema no ano em que ele se

torna um charmoso quarentão será tarefa fá-cil. Além de Golpe Duplo, em agosto será lan-çado, com um ano de atraso, o polêmico Jane Got a Gun, produção western estrelada por Na-talie Portman e que ficou famosa pelas muitas trocas de cadeira no elenco e na direção. Para o brasileiro, a obra representa outro passo na carreira, pois é a primeira vez que interpreta um norte-americano. “Ele é do Sul dos Estados Unidos e tem ascendência irlandesa. Tanto que meu personagem se chama Fitchum, um nome irlandês porque foi pensado para um irlandês. Fui escalado para o papel e, mesmo assim, tudo continuou igual. O que se mostrou um desafio ainda maior para mim, que tive que fazer um sotaque fortíssimo. Foi uma aventura e tanto.”

Também está prevista para 2015 a estreia de The 33, adaptação do dramático episódio de 2010 em que 33 mineiros chilenos passaram 69 dias presos em uma mina – Santoro é um dos protagonistas, ao lado de Antonio Banderas e Juliette Binoche. E ele ainda vai aparecer na cinebiografia do astro do futebol Pelé, espera-da para o segundo semestre. Por todos esses motivos, é fácil entender a resposta de Santoro ao ser questionado se ser quarentão o incomo-da. “Se a vida começa aos 40, eu estou pronto para começar. Posso dizer que estou me sentin-do muito bem.” •
