Presidents Report There are seasons in your life; I have had a particularly busy one at
the moment. Some members may have noticed my absence at events
the last month, it’s not because of lack of motivation, it’s because
Jenni and I are renovating our home to sell so it’s all hands on deck
for these couple of months on the weekends.
We have got another Humvee in the VMVC, that’s great but when I
was asked to go in convoy with two other HMMWVs to the picnic at
Fern Tree Gully last month, BUGGER!, it hurt to decline but I’m
focused for these few months and toughened my skin from all the
jives and ragging I’m getting from the Committee (love you guys :)
But behind the scenes things are still rolling on in the VMVC I am in
contact with the controlling officer with the Avalon Air show for
2015. He has asked me for three or four Vehicles to be displayed at
Avalon terminal on FRIDAY the 14th of November for a
international media morning for a couple of hours ( lunch provided )
So I need 2 members who would like to accompany me and Gordon
with their vehicles and period uniforms on that morning .Please
contact myself, it will be a fun morning with a lot of attention on our
vehicles and military aircraft . The Airshow will be a 3 day event
next year the committee is working on a display for that event and we
will keep you posted :).
On the Vic Roads club permit scheme , we have had NO indication
that roadworthy’s are required as yet for club plates ,it is still the
same system , so if you have a vehicle close to needing them get a
wiggle on and obtain your permit .
That is all , Rod Out.

THE WW1 100 YEARS
COMMEMORATIVE PARADE IN NAGAMBIE
The township of Nagambie is
preparing to commemorate the
Nagambie and district soldiers
who went to World War One,
with a 100 years
commemorative week, 8-15
November.
Displays will be around the
town at the schools, museum,
library, and on 11th November,
army personnel from
Puckapunyal will conduct a
catafalque party at our town
cenotaph.
On Saturday, 15 November, we
are planning to have a street
parade, with as many
representatives from our
services and specialty groups as
we can. The Puckapunyal
personnel will be only able to
provide two vehicles for the
event.
I would like to request that you
let your members know of our special day, and if they are interested
in being involved to let me know as soon as possible please. It would
look marvellous to have some military vehicles in the parade to add
atmosphere and realism to what we are trying to achieve.
The plan is for all those marching or driving vehicles to line up in
their groups at the cenotaph memorial in High St. Nagambie (Old
Goulburn Valley Hwy through town) about 1.15pm. Then to
march/drive off up the street, to the RSL buildings and to dissemble
there, for afternoon tea, displays, etc. The evening will end with a
dinner at the Golf Club.
I am representing the committee, as their military advisor, as I
worked with the army at Puckapunyal in operations for many years
until I retired last year.
I can be contacted on 5794 1720, email [email protected]
for any further details.
Looking forward to a positive response from your vehicle enthusiasts.
Yours sincerely, Diane Grant

Report We were fortunate with the weather; it made it a great
day for driving around the City with the top off in the
Jeep. A good parade with lots of interest from the public.
The theme of the school floats was children’s books. We
helped support the local RSL branch, so a job well done.
After the parade we went down to the oval for a coffee

Pristine vintage car for sale (Pity about the previous Nazi owner):
Military Wanderer W11/1 on the market for £400,000 at German
dealership
By Allan Hall In Berlin
On the face of it, it sounds like any wealthy car collector's dream
- a 1930s vehicle in pristine condition, its past brimming with
stories, up for sale for £400,000.
But any buyer will have to come to terms with the fact that this
was the very vehicle that used to transport infamous Nazi
Heinrich Himmler around during World War II – when he was
the architect of the Holocaust.
The military Wanderer W11/1 was the S.S. and Gestapo chief's
official transport as he inspected the concentration camps and
the killing fields of Russia, where he witnessed mass executions
of Jews and partisans.
Michael Fröhlich, who is selling the car, said he has already had
some interest from neo-Nazis, to whom he refused to sell it
Now it is being offered for sale by vintage car dealer Michael
Fröhlich, whose Oldtimer Agency has been running for 40 years
in Germany. He has previously sold the Rolls-Royce of the
Moroccan king and a host of vehicles owned by celebrities.
The four-seater with a three-litre, 65 horsepower engine was
acquired by Himmler in 1939. It has 63,500 miles on the clock
and was used in conjunction with his private fleet of limousines,
mostly in the European territories conquered by the Nazis.
Fröhlich says he acquired the vehicle through a financial
consulting firm.
The four-seater, three-litre vehicle, which has a 65 horsepower
engine, was used by Himmler as he
went about his business in the
European territories conquered by
the Nazis
Some interested parties have already
called seeking to buy it, but he
considered them neo-Nazis and
refused to sell it. The car has been
authenticated by Second World War
historians as being the one that
transported the Third Reich's angel
of death on his sinister travels.
The car was built by a company in
Chemnitz, eastern Germany, which
became Karl Marx Stadt under the
communists. The firm moved to
Munich after the war and went bust
in 2010.
In 1991 the vehicle was recovered from a museum in Riga, Latvia,
which was also going bankrupt. It is now in a storeroom between a
McDonald's restaurant and warehouses on an industrial estate in
Mettmann in North Rhine-Westphalia.

BBQ at Upper Ferntree Gully,
This VMVC event was in combination with the Frankston Young
Veterans RSL.
We met at rendezvous point and set off up the mountain in high
spirits, the organizers had arranged with Parks Victoria to set aside a
place for our vehicles, unfortunately when we arrived there was
complete chaos, no spots reserved and every park taken. Fortunately
Alex McPherson, utilizing his local knowledge suggested we move
up the mountain to one Tree Hill Park, which is basically at the end
of the thousand steps.
California and MVPA plate Hum-Vee
This proved to be a much better location and we were able to bully
ourselves into a commanding position at the top of the mountain,
Mike Gurkin had his BBQ trailer and we made ourselves at home.
It was a glorious Sunday and the warm weather seems to bring
members and their vehicles out of the garage, of course we were not
where we said we would be , so I had a continual flow of calls about
where we were located, happily it was only a short distance up the
mountain to join us.
1,000 Steps
If you’re a bit out of shape, the name 1000 Steps probably scares the
bejesus out of you (and rightly so). Though there aren’t actually 1000
of them (I think it’s actually somewhere around 770), the reality is
pretty much as terrifying as it sounds. This is the hike that reminds
me every single time I visit, just how desperately my body needs me
to start exercising more often.
This is probably the most popular spot in the Dandenong Ranges, and
that’s not just because hiking up the steps is such a good workout.
The steps actually follow a creek up through a lush gully, thick with
Tree Ferns and Manna Gum. Occasionally Lyrebirds can even be
seen foraging in the undergrowth beside the track, not in the slightest
bit disturbed by the hordes of panting people trudging their way up
and down. The steps are just as perfect a spot to visit with the kids for
a weekend family outing, as they are for someone in training for the
real Kokoda Trail.
Plaques along the trail depict the lives of the soldiers who fought and
died on the real Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea, during World
War II. According to Parks Victoria’s Park Note, they "represent the
‘Golden Staircase’ a name given by Australian soldiers to the 2000
steps cut by the Australian Army Engineers and others into the track
between Uberi and Imita Ridge.”
You’ll notice that not many people take any notice of these plaques,
but I guess that’s because most people visit the steps on a regular
basis. Though I’ve visited many times, I still occasionally use the
plaques as a good excuse to stop for a breather when I feel like I’m
about to pass out.
If you’re looking to visit when the crowds are minimal, try for rainy
days. However, the steps can even be slippery on dry days so make
sure you’re equipped with good shoes and watch your step. On the
average Saturday or Sunday the hardcore fitness fanatics will be out
in force from the first daylight hours, but numbers dwindle as the day
goes on. Mid to late afternoon is probably the best time to visit if you
want to go at your own pace, without having to stop to let people pass
or wait for others to let you pass them.
Brad and his son saviors the fruits of victory
A high point of the day when we were the ominous rumble of heavy
vehicles coming up the road, when two Hum-Vee’s appeared, Brad
and John arrived for John this was his second VMVC event, a first
with his own vehicle. Interestingly his Hum-Vee had just cleared
customs with his other vehicles and was still sporting California
licence plates (he had a Vic Roads permit for the day). As you can
see from the photos the members had built up quite an appetite and
tucked into the club BBQ.
New members
Other new members present at the event were Theo and Helen Kajs, great to see new faces it makes the efforts of the committee in organizing these outing
worthwhile.

work and dedication by the local RSL and community members.
Frankston RSL President Brent Clyne said the centre is a way to
reach out to contempo-rary veterans and their families. “It is a place
for young veter-ans, those who’ve served in Iraq and Afghanistan, to
call their own.” “Young veterans have special needs, and in the past,
veter-ans hadn’t always accessed the care they needed. The Young
Veterans and Families Wellbe-ing Centre will provide a place of
trust, a safe place where young vets can have a chat and reach out for
assistance if they need it.”
Mr Clyne said the centre will be alcohol and judgement free and,
although based on the strong traditions of the RSL, it is geared
towards a new genera-tion of veterans with different needs. Minister
Snowdon praised the Frankston RSL for its efforts to continue to
evolve its traditional service model to better meet the needs of
younger veterans and their families. “I congratulate the Frankston
RSL and its members for devel-oping new and innovative ways to
engage the younger veteran community. I hope this centre will
inspire more RSLs to do the same,” he said. The Australian
Government provided $73,000 in funding towards the centre through
the Veteran and Community Grants program. For more information
on the centre, join its Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/

A St Marys engineering company has beaten global suppliers in
Europe and the Middle East to become home to the assembly line
of Australia’s newest special-forces vehicles. Baker and Provan, which is based in the Dunheved Industrial Estate,
is set to build components and assemble 89 Supacat Specialist
Operations Vehicles - Commandos.

tonnes. Picture: Matt Sullivan Source: News Limited
The new vehicles are based on Supacat’s High Mobility Transporter
Extender, which can be configured as a 4x4 or 6x6 and weighs up to
a whopping 10.5 tonnes.
The Supacats will be used by the Australian Defence Force’s special
operations unit, used in combat to protect soldiers while driving
across battle zones, including near improvised explosive devices and
other rocket-propelled grenades.

The Supacat has an optional mine blast and ballistic protection kit
and can also be fitted with mission hampers, weapons,
communications and force protection equipment to suit a wide range
of operational roles.
Defence minister David Johnston today announced the contract,
worth more than $130 million.
The contract will create 150 new jobs, 55 of which will be based in St
Marys.
“It is a very important and difficult task to keep our men safe when
they’re driving around across improvised explosive devices and other
rocket-propelled grenades,” Mr Johnston said.

He said the vehicles have “all the things we would want cutting-edge
Special Forces to have when they’re in battle”.
He said acquiring the vehicles would enhance Australia’s Special
Forces’ ability to maintain a capable edge over emerging threats to
national interests.
“We need to meet that sort of kinetic force with a very superior and
very well armoured but flexible, mobile and highly capable vehicle
and that’s what we’ve got with Supacat,” he said.
Lindsay federal Liberal MP Fiona Scott was pleased $130 million
was being invested in western Sydney.
She said it would provide new jobs to create some the “most state-of
the-art and impressive military technology” to Australia.
“These are specialist technical jobs as well so it just goes to show the
innovation that is here in western Sydney,” Ms Scott said.
About 10 vehicles will be assembled a month with the first Supacat
expected to roll out of production as soon as September 2015.
Can’t wait till the Army starts to dispose of these!

War and Peace Revival, 16- 20 July 2014 at Folkestone Racecourse Here are some of my observations for VMVC members visiting in
the future.
It was really interesting walking around and talking to participants
and visitors. Be prepared to do lots of walking over a 200 acre site.
I arrived at Ashford in Kent, by the Eurostar fast train from Paris on
15th July, hired a car and visited War and Peace Revival over the
next 5 days and had a great time. I suggest you book accommodation
early, as it is a big event and close accommodation books out early. I
stayed at the Ashford International Hotel, which was a 15 – 20
minutes car ride each day. I suggest you talk to Paul Jeffreys before
February to get cheap entry into the event otherwise it is almost 20
pounds per day. Be careful when it rains, (it is England after all), take
suitable waterproof shoes and waterproof clothing and umbrella.
Prepare for all seasons, take plenty of sunscreen, a hat and long
sleeved shirts as well. We had days of 32 degrees C where it was
really easy to get sunburnt on these record breaking summer days.
There was a large number of living history displays. My favourite
was the Australian Vietnam display equipped with Land-Rovers,
tents, sand bags, 105 mm artillery gun, M60 machine gun, L2A1 and
L1A1 rifles and other miscellaneous gear being manned by Brits
acting as Vietnam era Aussies. The funny thing was that I was the
only one to have ever been in the Australian Army and to have used
all the gear in the Vietnam era.
There were excellent diorama displays of the Germany Army during
WWII including the Russian winter. Typical German trenches with
MG 34, MG42, Kübelwagen, schwimmwagen, Opel trucks, Panzer
Mark III and IV tanks, etc. The German Peoples Army had an
average age of 58 year and suffered 5+ million casualties in 1944 / 45
fighting the Russians.
As far as vehicles went, there were many to look at, Bedfords,
GMCs, Diamond T tank transporters and other Diamond Ts as well,
Opels, MAN, REO, GAZ, Thornycroft, Alvis, Zil, Unimog, Land
Rovers, Warde La France, Leyland, lots of Jeeps, Champs, Dodges,
Whites, Ferrets, Daimlers, Staghounds, and lots of tracked vehicles
and tanks. There were a whole range of classic cars and other
vehicles. I don’t remember seeing a Studebaker US6 or Acco Mk III,
IV or F1/F2.
The many activities for non-vehicle lovers included:- 1940’s make up
classes, dance lessons, concerts, static displays of WWI trench
warfare, hundreds of stalls where you could buy dozens of Bren guns,
MG42’s, Thompson sub-machine guns and just about any WWII
firearm you could think of. There were also lots of stores where you
could buy books, clothes, military gear and paintings.
There were lots of famous lookalikes – General Patton, General
MacArthur, Field Marshall Montgomery, Laurel and Hardy, Elvis
Presley, as well as some RAF pilots and ground crew looking after a
spitfire and Hurricane. Oddball of Kelly heroes fame was there with
plenty of Oddball T-shirts with some of his favourite phrases (re:-
“Negative waves”,” Eating French cheese” and “Catching some
rays”, which sold well.
There were lots of Brits dressed up as Germans, who often dressed as
Americans, people from every nation portraying someone else. The
1940’s concerts were great, as were the 1940’s tea rooms staffed by
happy people in period costumes.
The daily demonstrations and events were always interesting. Ear
plugs were a handy item with lots of explosions and firing of a
variety of firearms including cannons, machine guns and rifles.
Some of the re-enactments did not follow the usual plots. Sometimes
the Germans beat the Americans in France. As an ex-Australian
Army marksman I was amazed at how bad the shooting was, there
were not too many killed or wounded. Thousands of US Army
rounds were required to silence a couple of Vietcong.
The tanks and tracked vehicles put on great shows. An earth moving
scraper and bull- dozer created a huge tank trap. A Russian T34 tank
got bogged in the hole despite having wide tracks and had to be
pulled out by a Centurion. Three 6X6 Scammells failed to tow a
Chieftain tank in the mud created by lots of rain but the Universal
carriers put on an impressive show.
The public car park became very boggy and great care was required
on entering and exiting the car park. An all wheel drive military
vehicle would have been far more useful than my hire car. However
there were lots of helpful people towing out others in trouble.
I can really recommend you attend the event in the future, there was
lots to look at and do in over 200 acres, looking at displays or talking
to interesting people or buying things.
Next time I will take my Vietnam era clothing and be prepared for
every kind of weather.
By the way, the Brits manning the Vietnam Aussie display are in
need of larger sized jungle greens, badges and GP boots. Any ideas
where I can buy suitable gear to send to them would be greatly
appreciated.

Film Review FURY The film is set during the last month of World War II in April 1945.
As the Allies make their final push in the European Theater, a battle-
hardened U.S. Army sergeant in the 2nd Armored Division named
Wardaddy (Brad Pitt) commands a M4A3E8 Sherman tank called
"Fury" and its five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy
lines. Outnumbered and outgunned, Wardaddy and his men face
overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of
Nazi Germany.
On April 3, 2013, Sony started to assemble the cast for the film when
Brad Pitt, who starred in 2009's Inglourious Basterds, was in final
talks to take lead in another World War II film, where he'd portray
the role of a sergeant called Wardaddy who is in command of a
Sherman tank. On April 23 Shia LaBeouf also joined the cast to co-
star with Pitt. On 1 May it was announced that Logan Lerman has
also joined Fury's cast, he'll play Pitt's crew member as Norman
Ellison. On 14 May THR announced that Michael Peña is in
negotiations to join Pitt's crew on the tank. On May 17, Jon Bernthal
joined cast as Grady Travis, a cunning, vicious and world-wise
Arkansas native. On August 26, Scott Eastwood also joined the cast
of Fury, he'll play Sergeant Miles. On 19 September Brad William
Henke joined the ensemble cast of Fury; he'll play as Sergeant Davis,
a commander of a tank Lucy Sue. Jason Isaacs also joined cast on 7
October 2013 to co-star with Brad Pitt.
The film's crews were rehearsing the film scenes in Hertfordshire,
England in September 2013. Brad Pitt was spotted in the preparations
of his new film driving a tank on September 3 in the English
countryside.
The shooting of the film began on September 30, 2013, in the
Oxfordshire countryside. The Pinewood Studios sent warning letters
to the villagers of Shirburn, Pyrton and Watlington that there would
be some gunfire and explosions during the filming of Fury.
On 15 October 2013, a stuntman was accidentally stabbed in the
shoulder by a bayonet while rehearsing at the set in Pyrton. He was
taken to John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford by an air ambulance, police
confirmed that they were treating it as an accident.
In November the film caused controversy by shooting a scene on
Remembrance Day in which extras wore Nazi uniforms. Ayer
apologized for the incident, and Sony also made an apology.
The film will feature the last surviving operational Tiger I. The
vehicle, known as Tiger 131, belongs to Bovington Tank Museum.
It's the first time a real Tiger tank – and not a prop version – has been
used on a film set.

Talbot Talbot was an automobile marque that existed from 1903
to 1992, with a hiatus from 1960 to 1978, under different
owners, latterly Peugeot. Talbot participated in rallying,
winning the 1981 World Rally Championship
constructors' title, and in Formula One.
Talbot was originally the British marque used to sell
imported French Clément-Bayard cars. Founded in 1903,
this business venture was financed by Charles Chetwynd-
Talbot, 20th Earl of Shrewsbury and Adolphe Clément-
Bayard. Starting in 1905, the company sold imported cars
under the Clément-Talbot marque and began assembling
French-made parts at a new factory located in Barlby
Road, Ladbroke Grove, North Kensington, London,
selling them under the name Talbot. Domestically-
designed cars followed from 1906. By 1910, 50 to 60 cars
a month were being made. A Talbot was the first car to
cover 100 mph (160 km/h), in 1913.
Parallel Talbots in Britain and France
During World War I, the firm manufactured ambulances.
French and British operations continued in separate,
parallel production and marketing processes until 1919,
when British-owned but Paris-based Darracq took over
the company; Darracq-made Talbots were marketed as
Talbot-Darracqs. The following year, Darracq was
reorganised as part of the Sunbeam-Talbot-Darracq (STD)
conglomerate.
In 1916, Swiss native Georges Roesch became chief
engineer, and in the 1920s, Talbot built a number of
successful models, including the 14/45 hp, or Talbot 105,
which was first built in 1926. In the 1930s, Roesch-
designed Talbots enjoyed success in racing with the Fox
& Nicholl team, their drivers including the Hon. Brian
Lewis, Johnny Hindmarsh, and John Cobb (better known
for his land speed record attempts). They were also highly
successful in the Alpine Trial.
The Rootes era
In 1935, the STD combine collapsed and the Rootes Group took over
Clément-Talbot. For Rootes, immediate sustainability was more
important than re-engineering - the existing models were simply
rebadged. The French factory was bought by Antonio Lago who used
Talbot-Lago as a marque afterwards.
In Britain, Sunbeam and Talbot marques were combined in 1938 to
form Sunbeam-Talbot. Production of Sunbeam Talbot automobiles
ceased during World War II and resumed again in 1946, and the
Talbot name was dropped in 1955. The Sunbeam name continued
under the Rootes management (Rapier, Alpine and Tiger) until 1967
when control was taken over by Chrysler.

BIT OF HISTORY I BETCHA DIDN’T KNOW
Hours after Pearl Harbor was bombed on December 7, 1941, the
Secret Service found themselves in a bind. President Franklin D.
Roosevelt was to give his Day of Infamy speech to Congress on
Tuesday, and although the trip from the White House to Capitol Hill
was short, agents weren’t sure how to transport him safely.
At the time, Federal Law prohibited buying any cars that cost more
than $750, so they would have to get clearance from Congress to do
that, and nobody had time for that. One of the Secret Service
members, however, discovered that the US Treasury had seized the
bulletproof car that mobster Al Capone owned when he was sent to
jail in 1931. They cleaned it, made sure it was running perfectly and
had it ready for the President the next day.
Al Capone's 1928 Cadillac V-8 "Al Capone" Town Sedan
Became the President's Limo December 1941 Mechanics are said to have cleaned and checked each feature of the
Caddy well into the night of December 7th, to make sure that it
would run properly the next day for the Commander in Chief. And
run properly it did. It had been painted black and green to look
identical to Chicago’s police cars at the time. To top it off, the
gangster’s 1928 Cadillac Town Sedan had 3,000 pounds of armor and
inch-thick bulletproof windows.
It also had a specially installed siren and flashing lights hidden
behind the grille, along with a police scanner radio. Footnote: The
car was sold at auction in 2012 for $341,000.
