    a cl assroom

    ' The i nf l uence that t el evi si on has on our soci et y i s enormous .

    I t i s t he pr i mary source of opi ni ons and f act s f or most Ameri cans .

    I t i s our maj or medi um of entert ai nment . Yet i n the twenty- f i ve

    years of Tel evi si on' s pri macy i n Ameri ca, i t s basi c structure

    remai ned the same .

    Several economc

    ext remel y hi gh cost of program producti on and di stri but i on,

    and t echnol ogi cal f actors are responsi bl e

    We are about to enter a new era . of communi cat i ons .

    Several recent t echnol ogi cal devel opments make possi bl e a

    revol ut i on i n tel evi si on . These new tool s can radi cal l y al ter the

    way t el evi si on programs are concei ved , produced and di str i buted .

    1 . . Portabl e l / 2" vi deota pe equi pment - - Si nce 1968 a

    compl ete i nexpensi ve tel evi si on producti on uni t has been avai l abl e

    I t costs about $1500 and consi sts of a camera w th bui l t- i n mcro-

    phone, vi deotape recorder (VTR) and moni t or screen . Thi s equi pment( commonl y known as the ' portapack' ) i s compact , l i ght and port abl e .

    I t i s si mpl e to operate, and uses 1`2" erasabl e magnet i c tape .

    Producti on costs are roughl y one- tenth that of . 16 mr r i f i l m But

    2 . Communi ty antenna tel evi si on - - CATV ( or J ust . "cabl e)

    has been i n exi stence si nce 1949 . I t was ori gi nal l y desi gned as

    a means of suppl yi ng cl ear vi deo pi ctures to out- of - the- way homes .

    A cabl e systemconsi sts of (a) super antenna to pi ck up broadcasted

    si gnal s, (b) a "head" or "headend" whi ch processes these si gnal s

    and can serve to process l ocal l y ori gi nated si gnal s, (c) coaxi alt

    cabl e whi ch i s str ung vi a tel ephone pol es or ci ty ducts to the

    home TV sets .

    Today i t hol ds the promse of bei ng a revol ut i onary new mode

    of communi cat i on . The three mai n assets of cabl e, i n addi ti on
