DeduplicationStoreBenefitsEnterprisedataishighlyredundant,withidenticalfilesordatastoredwithinandacrosssystems(forexample,OSfilesordocumentssenttomultiplerecipients).Editedfilesalsohavetremendousredundancywithpreviousversions.Traditionalbackupmethodsmagnifythisbystoringalloftheredundantdataoverandoveragain.vSphereDataProtectionusespatenteddeduplicationtechnologytoeliminateredundancyatboththefileandthesubfiledatasegmentlevel.
Variablevs.FixedLengthDataSegmentsAkeyfactorineliminatingredundantdataatasegment(orsubfile)levelisthemethodfordeterminingsegmentsize.Fixedblockorfixedlengthsegmentsarecommonlyemployedbysnapshotandsomededuplicationtechnologies.Unfortunately,evensmallchangestoadataset(forexample,insertingdataatthebeginningofafile)canchangeallfixedlengthsegmentsinadataset,despitethefactthatverylittleofthedatasethasbeenchanged.vSphereDataProtectionusesanintelligentvariablelengthmethodfordeterminingsegmentsizethatexaminesthedatatodeterminelogicalboundarypoints,whichincreasesefficiency.

Image-level Backup and RestorevSphereDataProtectioncreatesimagelevelbackups,whichareintegratedwiththevStorageAPIforDataProtection,afeaturesetwithinvSpheretooffloadthebackupprocessingoverheadfromthevirtualmachinetotheVDPAppliance.TheVDPAppliancecommunicateswiththevCenterServertomakeasnapshotofavirtualmachines.vmdkfiles.Deduplicationtakesplacewithintheappliancebyusingapatentedvariablelengthdeduplicationtechnology.TosupportthelargescaleandcontinuallyexpandingsizeofmanyVMwareenvironments,eachVDPAppliancecansimultaneouslybackupto8virtualmachinesiftheinternalproxyisused,orbackupto24virtualmachinesifthemaximumnumberof8externalproxiesaredeployedwiththeVDPAppliance.Toincreasetheefficiencyofimagelevelbackups,VDPutilizestheChangedBlockTracking(CBT)feature,whichgreatlyreducesthebackuptimeofagivenvirtualmachineimageandprovidestheabilitytoprocessalargenumberofvirtualmachineswithinaparticularbackupwindow.ByleveragingCBTduringrestores,VDPoffersfastandefficientrecoveriesofvirtualmachinestotheiroriginallocation.Duringarestoreprocess,VDPusesCBTtodeterminewhichblockshavechangedsincethelastbackup.TheuseofCBTreducesdatatransferwithinthevSphereenvironmentduringarecoveryoperationandmoreimportantlyreducestherecoverytime.Additionally,VDPautomaticallyevaluatestheworkloadbetweenbothrestoremethods(fullimagerestoreorarecoveryleveragingCBT)andperformsthemethodresultinginthefastestrestoretime.ThisisusefulinscenarioswherethechangeratesincethelastbackupinavirtualmachinebeingrestoredisveryhighandtheoverheadofaCBTanalysisoperationwouldbemorecostlythanadirectfullimagerecovery.VDPdetermineswhichmethodresultsinthefastestimagerecoverytimesforvirtualmachinesintheenvironment.IMPORTANTVDPdoesnotsupportbackupsofavCenterServerAppliance(VCSA).TheVDPvirtualenvironment,however,canincludeaVCSA.
Single VMDK Backup and RestoreAfullimagebackupjobincludesalldisksintheentirevirtualmachine(VM)inasingleimagebackup.Individualdiskbackupjobsallowyoutoselectonlythedisksyouneed.AnimagelevelbackupofaVMwithunsupporteddisktypesdoesnotincludetheunsupporteddisktypesbecauseofsnapshotlimitations.WhenyourestoreaVM,theVDPAppliancerestorestheVMconfigurationfile(.vmx),whichresultsinthecreationofallVMDKsfromtheoriginalVM.IfanyoftheoriginalVMDKswerenotbackedup,therestoreprocesscreatesthemasprovisionalVMDKs.TheVMmaynotbefullyfunctionalinthiscase.TheprotectedVMDKs,however,canbeaccessedfromtherestore.SeeCreatingaBackupJobonIndividualDisksonpage 115forinstructionsonbackingupindividualdisks.
