Reading Strategy: Making InferencesIn order to get the information which is not stated clearly in your reading, you need to read between the lines to make inferences based on logic and your general knowledge of the world. If an inference is made by using the information given in one or two sentences, it is called a “local inference.” A “global inference,” on the other hand, depends on the information from several parts of your reading.

Page 40: Vocabulary Idioms & Phrases Vocabulary Idioms & Phrases Reading -Paragraphs 9-13 -Paragraphs 9-13 Post-reading

Reference answer :Yes, I have. I am a member of the marching band in our school. I play the clarinet. Two years ago, in the school festival, our band gave a performance in front of the whole school. I felt very nervous before the performance because, frankly speaking, at that time I was not a very skilled clarinetist. When I played, I sometimes made unexpected noise. At the beginning of our performance, everything

Page 41: Vocabulary Idioms & Phrases Vocabulary Idioms & Phrases Reading -Paragraphs 9-13 -Paragraphs 9-13 Post-reading

Reference answer :was just OK. The martial music that we played sounded just fine. We caught the audience’s full attention. I could spot some classmates of mine standing in the crowd, looking at me with admiration. When I started to feel proud of myself, something embarrassing happened. My clarinet gave a loud sharp noise. The crowd near me was stunned at first and then began giggling. Seeing their reaction,

Reference answer :I felt even more stressed. My face turnedred, my brain went blank, and my fingers stiffened. To make matters worse, I was off beat. In a minute, the music stopped. All the audience gave us loud applause. However, I could hardly enjoy it. I felt ashamed of my terrible performance. I really wish that I had stayed calm like the speaker in the reading.

Reference answer :

I am always nervous about talking to girls. Whenever I talk to girls, my hands sweat, my heart pounds, and then my head goes blank. I feel awkward because of my reactions. The reasons why I feel nervous about talking to girls may be that: First, I have no sisters. Second, there is no female student in my school. (That is, I go to a boys’ school.) Therefore, I seldom have the chance to

Reference answer :

talk to girls. After studying the reading, I admire the way the speaker handled her greatest fear public speaking. She faced her fear, stayed calm, and managed to overcome it. I think determination is the key to her success. What I have learned from the reading is: Face my problem, stay calm, and I will overcome it. To do so, I may begin with chatting with girls from other schools on

Page 46: Vocabulary Idioms & Phrases Vocabulary Idioms & Phrases Reading -Paragraphs 9-13 -Paragraphs 9-13 Post-reading

Reference answer :BBS. Maybe I will find it is not so difficult to talk to girls. Maybe soon I will get the nerve to talk to girls face-to-face.
