5Customers who choose Volvo will be the most satisfied customers on the market
Competition in the public transport market is tougher than ever. This has lead to increasing demands for
vehicle quality, service contact, flexibility and low cost of ownership. Simultaneously, there is a growing
need for new system solutions and services that increase operators profitability and competitiveness.
Naturally, Volvo Buses future growth largely depends on our ability to enhance our customers success.
This means that constantly updated knowledge of the conditions our customers face is a basic criterion
when developing new products and services.
To better meet customer needs, we have upgraded almost all our products over the past few years.
Today, our product programme is one of the broadest and most up-to-date in the industry, comprising
city buses, intercity buses and tourist coaches. Volvo Buses is well-positioned for future advances in
engine technology to meet the markets high demands for efficiency and environmental care. We have
also upgraded our spare parts, financing and servicing programme, and now provide wide-ranging total
solutions for customers who prefer to focus completely on their core activities. We collaborate with Volvos
truck units to develop a top-class global service network with solid know-how regarding buses.
Volvo Buses has strong global presence and operates virtually worldwide. Our activities comprise sales
and services, and in many cases also manufacturing. To meet specific local needs and demands, we
have strong local representation on our individual markets.
Demand has been weak throughout the bus industry for some time. This poses new challenges for both
operators and manufacturers, and requires extra efforts from all those involved. I am confident that Volvo
Buses has all the resources and factors needed to lay the ground for long-term success. I will continue
to work untiringly to promote the development of our products and services in close consultation with
customers worldwide, thus enhancing our customers competitiveness. Our goal is clear: Customers
who choose Volvo will be the most satisfied customers on the market.

6Responsible business practice
Today, buses account for a large proportion of public transport. As one of the worlds leading manu-
facturers of large buses, with solid, long-standing traditions in promoting traffic safety, we play an im-
portant role in shaping safer traffic environments. We aim to supply reliable products and services that
minimise the risks and consequences of accidents when our products are used. We also actively work
to minimise emissions and fuel consumption, thus reducing environmental pollution from our buses.
We aim to be leaders in customer satisfaction. We maintain ongoing contact with our customers to
monitor how they perceive us, what we do well and what we can improve. Our key values quality,
safety and environmental care form the basis for our product development and the way we serve our
customers and society.
Safety has long been a central issue for Volvo Buses. Our safety efforts are based on many years of ex-
perience and know-how, and are primarily aimed at minimising accident risk. Consequently, the drivers
workplace is a key concern in the planning and production of Volvos buses. An ergonomic workplace
with optimum scope for vehicle control reduces accident risk and increases the safety of passengers
and other road users.
Volvos environmental programme is based on sustainability throughout the buss entire life cycle,
spanning design, production, use, servicing and recycling. Approximately 90% of the total environmen-
tal impact of a traditional diesel bus arises from its use. To reduce emissions and fuel consumption,
we have developed new technologies such as turbocharging, intercooling and individual injection, thus
cutting harmful substances in exhaust fumes by up to 85% in the past 20 years. We have also reduced
fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions for heavy buses by roughly 30%. Our latest develop-
ment for aftertreatment of exhaust gases can already meet the Euro 5 standard, which will take effect
in the EU in 2008-2009.
Alternative fuels. Volvo Buses invests heavily in developing vehicles for alternative fuels, and is one
of Europes leading manufacturers of natural gas and biogas buses. We are field-testing buses with
combined gas and battery operation that can be driven completely emission-free for short distances.
We also conduct extensive research in DME (dimethyl ether), the most promising fuel for substituting
conventional diesel. DME-powered buses could enter the market in just a couple of years. DME can be
used in an ordinary diesel engine with a new fuel injection system, producing the same performance
with dramatically reduced emissions. DME is seen as the most energy-efficient future biofuel from well
to wheel.

7Active and passive safety. Volvo is a global leader in safety, for instance through our systems for preventing accidents and mini-mising injury in connection with accidents. Our main preventative safety features are ex-cellent driving properties, high road stability and powerful brakes. Stronger bus bodies, seatbelts and protective interiors reduce risk of passenger injury on collision. In our traf-fic safety work, we constantly aim to learn from accidents on the roads. Volvo has been researching traffic accidents since the early 1970s, and the findings are used in our de-velopment of vehicles and systems.
Our driving safety features include: Elec-tronic Stability Program, disc brakes, inte-grated hydraulic retarders, high visibility, op-timum climate in the driver area, ergonomic drivers seat and cameras for monitoring doors and the space behind the bus.
Our collision safety features include: col-lapsible steering wheel, roll-tested body structure, frontal collision protection, seat-belts for driver and passengers, and interiors without sharp or protruding objects and edges.
Safer future. Volvo actively works to develop new safety solutions. One example is ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), a cruise control with sensors that automatically adapt the buss speed to the vehicle ahead. Another example is Lane Tracking, a system that warns the driver if the bus accidentally swerves outside the driving lane.
ESP. The safety of Volvos buses is fur-ther improved with Volvos electronically controlled disc brakes, which can now be supplemented with ESP, Volvos Electronic Stability Program. This sys-tem reduces the risk of overturning or veering off the road, for instance during skids. The systems sensors monitor the vehicles movements and read parameters such as lateral accelera-tion, steering wheel displacement and wheel speed. This information is used to individually activate and adjust each wheels brake pressure. Speed can also be reduced, if necessary, to minimise the risk of overturning. The system also allows easy diagnosis of the brake func-tions. Data regarding pressure, wear etc. can easily be obtained through the buss information system.

8A strong total offer
Volvo Buses provides one of the best product ranges in the industry today, comprising newly developed
products, a global service network, an efficient spare parts service and traffic information systems.
Innovative product programme. In less than four years, we have upgraded our entire product pro-
gramme. Most of our bus models are based on TX, the Companys product platform for intercity buses
and tourist coaches, introduced in 2000. The TX was the largest industrial project in Volvo Buses
history, and has raised our products to a completely new level of technology and quality. Through the
TX platform, Volvo can satisfy customers flexibility requirements and the need for cost-effective, large-
scale production with high component compatibility. The introduction of the TX platform has thus al-
lowed us to significantly reduce the number of components in production. The benefits are seen at all
stages, from procurement, production and warehousing to distribution and service.
High reliability. Volvo Buses has an excellent reputation based on high reliability. Volvo Buses has
always focused on producing high-quality products that meet customers demands for passenger com-
fort, driving safety and low cost of ownership. Volvo Buses collaborates closely with customers and
suppliers to meet future quality requirements. A high level of quality is achieved by assuring the quality
of each individual link in the chain.
Outstanding customer support. Volvo meets the markets demands for service contact by constantly
improving its buses, and through a service network comprising 1 200 workshops in over 80 countries.
In Europe, Volvo Buses is further expanding its service organisation by establishing Volvo Bus Service
Centers, which assist customers with all problems regarding our vehicles. In the event of unexpected
standstills, the Volvo Action Service provides round-the-clock assistance. Our distribution of spare
parts will be rationalised through the harmonisation of components for our various bus models. A
number of technical improvements have led to increased service and maintenance intervals for the
latest bus models. Operations are becoming faster and simpler thanks to new technical solutions, not
least computerised diagnosis.
Financial services. Volvo Buses also provides a wide range of financial services to provide customised
transport solutions with optimum cost of ownership. For instance, we offer customers various leasing
and service agreements.
Traffic information systems. To rationalise public transport in big cities, Volvo Buses provides tailored
traffic control, travel information and vehicle management solutions.

9Volvo Sound & Vision is a modern, top-quality audio and video package available as supplementary equipment, primarily for tourist coaches. A simpler audio package with an intelligent announcement system is available for intercity and city buses, and is specially adapted to the acoustic conditions in buses. The specially devel-oped speakers provide clear stereo sound throughout the bus, and can be supple-mented with subwoofers for added dynam-ics. The video equipment comes with a DVD or VHS player with flat TFT screens.
The TX platform provides advantages such as simpler and better servicing with longer oil change intervals and more main-tenance-free points. The engine used is a new, powerful, fuel-efficient 12-litre engine with excellent environmental properties. The chassis frame has high torsional rigid-ity, and is made of stainless steel for a long life. A new truss design combines high stability with low weight. A new electronic system, Bus Electronic Architecture (BEA) provides safer communication between the components and increased opportuni-ties for diagnosis and obtaining important vehicle data. The independent front sus-pension provides optimum comfort and high wheel travel. Volvos new, patented, electronically controlled brake system and disc brakes are standard.
Volvo I-Shift is a new automated manual gearbox with perfect synchro-
nisation between engine and electron-
ics for optimum driveability. Thanks
to a new IT solution, the gearbox has
unique control properties, putting it in
a league of its own among automated
manual gearboxes. Besides improv-
ing driving comfort and safety, Volvo
I-Shift cuts fuel consumption thanks to
its optimum gear change, light weight
and low internal friction losses. I-Shift
can be set to various driving properties
and used in two modes economy and
performance which the driver selects
with the gear lever. The driver can
change the gears manually if necessary.
The gearbox works with the buss brake
system and retarder for optimum brak-
ing power.

Products and services
Over the past ten years, Volvo Buses has evolved from the manufacturer of a few bus chassis models into the
worlds second-largest bus supplier. We are constantly launching new models for all types of bus transport.
Intercity buses and tourist coaches. Volvos broad programme for intercity and tourist traffic is based on a
number of flexible basic models with high comfort, strong performance and excellent driving properties. The
Volvo 8500, Volvo 8700, Volvo 9700 and Volvo 9900 are all based on the TX platform. The Volvo 8500 and
Volvo 8700 also come in low-entry versions. The buses characteristics include an attractive, modern design,
high comfort and security, and good stability and road grip. They use Volvos latest electronically controlled 12-
litre diesel engine with highly competitive fuel consumption and low emission levels. The Volvo 9300, based
on Volvos new 9-litre engine, was recently launched in Mexico. Volvo produces luxury tourist coaches in North
America in partnership with Prvost Car.
Chassis. All Volvos bus models can be supplied as a chassis for bodying by external local coachbuilders.
One example is the Volvo B7R, one of Volvo Buses bestsellers. The Volvo B7R has a robust, simple design
and exceptional operational reliability. Its chassis is extremely flexible and is used for city, intercity and tourist
traffic worldwide.

Quality on an expanding market. Ap-proximately 70% of Indias population travel
regularly by bus. Volvo Buses in India has
flourished since it started in 2001. In less
than two years, 300 air-conditioned luxury
buses have been introduced on the roads.
With the Volvo B7R, Volvo has introduced
a total concept combining performance, ap-
pearance, safety and comfort.
Private bus transport companies that
started off with one or two buses have now
expanded, and many are building up bus
fleets comprising only of Volvo buses. These
companies base their branding on Volvos
buses and the quality transport they provide.
They are relying more on the quality of their
Volvo buses, thus increasing the number of
services on popular bus routes.
In 2004, Volvo Buses will expand its busi-
ness in northern India, as well as increasing
its export of luxury intercity buses to Bang-
ladesh.
Market leader in Norway. Express bus traffic is widespread in
Norway. This is largely due to a significant increase in charter
traffic in recent years. Express buses have captured a large
market share from trains because of their flexibility. Volvo Bus-
es Norwegian customers include small bus companies, which
buy approximately one bus every two years, as well as large
bus partnerships that collaborate over the purchase of buses
and spare parts. One of the larger partnerships is Nettbuss,
which operates in Norway and Sweden with a total fleet of
2,300 buses. Over half of these are Volvo buses. Volvo Buses
lead the market in Norway, with an approximate market share of
50%. In 2003, Volvo Buses supplied 204 buses to Norway, out
of a total market of 428.

City buses. Volvos city buses have a low floor and low entry point, facilitating and speeding up entry and
exit. The Volvo 7500 and Volvo 7700 are well adapted to current urban traffic regulations, with a flat, step-
less floor through the whole bus. This also facilitates entry and exit for disabled passengers and parents with
prams. Volvo Buses range of city buses includes the Volvo Olympian, one of the worlds best-selling double
deckers. We also have a wide range of articulated buses. These buses double the buss passenger capacity,
creating both financial and environmental benefits. Volvo is also a European leader in gas-powered buses.
Intelligent transport systems. Volvo Buses provides traffic control and information systems based on its
telematic unit, Mobility Systems, to rationalise public transport, shorten travel times and increase punctu-
ality. ITS4mobility is a module-based, real-time system that can be tailored to the customers needs. The
system has functions for vehicle and fleet monitoring, traffic control, and real-time passenger information
on departures, delays etc. The system is provided factory-fitted in Volvos buses and for later assembly in
mixed fleets.
Bus Rapid Transport (BRT). Volvo Buses has long experience of system solutions for urban public trans-
port. Bus Rapid Transport, an innovative, efficient transport system with separate traffic routes and entry and
exit platforms, was introduced in Bogot, Colombia in 2001. The system combines innovative technology
with past experience of similar solutions, for instance in Curitiba, Brazil. Volvo supplied most of the buses.

Gas buses. Volvo Buses range of gas buses includes complete buses and chassis for
further bodywork. Our complete buses in-
clude the Volvo 5000, Volvo 7000 and Volvo
8500 Low Entry. A bus using our gas engine,
running on Natural gas or Bio-Methane, pro-
duces low emissions combined with high per-
formance, on average equalling that of Volvos
diesel engines.
Our first two gas-powered buses were
supplied in 1992. Since then, Volvo Buses
has manufactured approximately 1 000 gas-
powered buses. The emission values have
been reduced dramatically compared to
earlier gas engine models. Volvos gas engine
already meets the Nitrogen oxide limits for
the Euro 4 standard (to take effect in 2006)
by a substantial margin. It already meets the
Euro 5 levels for particles, carbon monoxide
and hydrocarbons.
Double deckers in Hong Kong. The worlds largest double decker bus op-
erator is Kowloon Motor Bus Company
(KMB) of Hong Kong. In spring 2004,
when it celebrated its 70th anniversary,
KMB extended its fleet with 100 Volvo
Olympian 3-axle double deckers. Custom-
ers are delighted with the new buses.
The buses are specially adapted to meet
Hong Kongs high passenger loads. They
hold a maximum of 126 passengers, with
53 seats on the upper deck and 28 on the
lower deck.

Global production
Volvo Buses is a worldwide producer. Its modern plants produce complete buses and chassis to meet both
local and regional demands. Our production fulfills the Volvo Groups global standards, and is characterised
by excellent quality and working environment.
Our plant in Bors, Sweden has been producing bus chassis since the late 1970s. It is one of the Compa-
nys main production plants, and the one with the highest production capacity. In China, tourist coaches are
produced through a joint venture with Xian Silver Bus Corporation, initiated in 1994. In 2000, Volvo Buses
initiated another joint venture in China, Shanghai Sunwin Bus Corporation, for the production of city buses.
In 2002, Sunwin signed a contract for 1 000 city buses with one of Shanghais leading bus operators. Sun-
win also signed a framework agreement with Shanghais second-largest operator for the supply of 2 010
city buses over a five-year period. The upgrading of our factory in Mexico gives Volvo Buses an efficient base
for the production and sale of tourist coaches in the region. Volvos factory in Curitiba, Brazil produces bus
chassis and trucks. Volvo Buses also produces tourist bus chassis in India.
Bus factory in Wroclaw, Poland. Most of our complete city buses, intercity buses and tourist coaches for the Scandinavian
and central European markets are produced in Wroclaw, Poland.
In 2003, 249 complete buses and 86 bus chassis were produced
here.
Production is based on Volvos core values: quality, safety and
environmental care. The factory is certified according to ISO
9002, in line with a decade-long Volvo tradition. When it opened
in 2000, it also gained ISO 14001 certification for the execu-
tion, implementation and establishment of positive environmental
policies. Our bus factory in Wroclaw has approximately 700 em-
ployees, and is a key unit for Volvo Buses expansion in central
Europe.

A look back
When Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson made their plans for vehicle production in July 1924, it did not
include buses. But prevailing customer requirements forced Volvos two founders to think again. Swedish
bus companies wanted a small, economical, robust, high-quality bus for a reasonable price. So when the
first truck chassis was designed in December 1926 almost six months before the first passenger car rolled
out of the factory the Company also gained an excellent basic frame for a bus chassis. Trucks and buses
with the Volvo emblem were already being sold by 1928, laying the foundations for what has evolved into
the worlds second-largest manufacturer of heavy-duty buses. Gabrielsson and Larson established another
key factor behind Volvos excellent reputation in the bus industry: focus on customer needs and preferences.
This is the reason why the Company has expanded over the past 76 years from a small Swedish manufac-
turer to a global power.
