EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
“Wealth, place & power are no measure of sources. The only true measure is the ratio between
what we might have been & what we have become”. In this regard people should upgrade their
knowledge & keep in pace with changing technology & market condition to reach their desired
goal. As new opportunities are opening up in the field of infrastructure, industry & allied sector all
over the world. The desired goal can achieve only when both theory and practical go together hand
in hand.
An internship study is such an attempt to understand or link the theoretical concept with that of
practical applicability in an organisation.
The internship training was carried out at “vrl logistics limited” with a aim to know
the working of each and every department of the organisation & with respect to various functions
like planning, organising, & controlling. It is also to do research to get insight into the problem & to
give suggestion.

INDUSTRY PROFILE
OVERVIEW OF TRANSPORT INDUSTRY:
In today’s world, whether business is big or small,
domestic or global, the value of game clearly immense. Business today is focusing in how it
deliver goods and services to global markets in a timely or reliable manner. With the changing
economic scenario, factors such as globalization of markets, international economic integration,
and removal of barriers to business and trade and increased competition have enhanced the need
of transportation. It is one of the most important infrastructure requirements, which is essential
for the expansion of opportunities and plays an important role in making or breaking the
competitive positioning.
Transports volumes in India remains much less than
those in the developed countries. India has still to go a long way in strengthening its
transportation network. The countries transportation networks suffers from several inadequacies
and, in particular it has little resilience to deal with unforeseen demands.
Transportation like all industries is largely influenced
by information and communication technologies with the focus being on knowledge of customer
needs and value added services. Road and Indian railways are providing surface transportation
facility (primarily for carrying low value bulk commodity, mostly for the government sector).
Cargo road transport is entirely in the hands of the private sector. An estimated 1.2 million trucks
(9 tons capacity) crisscross the country covering more than 80000 kilometers of roads.
2 Don Bosco Institute of Bio Sciences and Management Studies
Organization study at
In India Road transportation is preferred for cargo movement, where flexibility of routing
assumes important. It facilitates door-to-door delivery, overcoming unnecessary delays, which
normally take place in other modes of transportation.
The industrial railway network, first introduced in 1853, has since expanded rapidly to become
the principal mode of transport for the movement of goods and peoples in India. In recent years
there also been a massive increase in the population of motorized vehicles in India, which has yet
to be accommodated by the country’s overburdened road network. Meanwhile, a situation of
limited capacity coupled with high demand in India’s major ports has resulted in port congestion,
highlighting the need for major redevelopment and investment.
CHARACTERISTICS OF MARKET:
India’s railways carry daily an average of twelve million
passengers and over a million tones of freight traffic on a network spread over 62,725 km,
covering 7,068 stations. It operates on three gauges i.e. broad gauge (1676 mm), meter gauge
(1000mm), and narrow gauge (762 and 610mm). Although broad gauge forms only 64.5% of the
route, it generated 96% of freight output and 89.6% of the passenger output during 2007-08.
In the same year, total passenger traffic was 4,018 million. 19.5%
(12,306 Km) of the total network and 30% of the broad gauge network is electrified. The
railways are the largest employer in the country, with over 1.6 million employees. Operating
revenue in 2007-08 was approximately 3.7 billion.
The 6000 km long Indian coastline has eleven major ports
(managed by the port trust of India under central government jurisdiction) & 163 intermediate
ports (under the jurisdiction of their respective state governments) however, as regards capacity,
productivity and efficiency Indian ports do not compare well with some of the international
ports.
3 Don Bosco Institute of Bio Sciences and Management Studies
Organization study at
In 2007-08, the total cargo handled at major Indian ports was
251.39 million tones, and growing demand has meant that the average ship turn around time at
these ports is increasing. dry & liquid bulk account for around 80% of the port traffic in volume,
while general cargo constitute the remaining traffic.
India’s road network of almost 3 million km is one of the largest
in the world. With the staggering increase in the motor vehicle population in recent years, the
Indian government recognised the urgent need to develop adequate road networks across the
country, and has introduced a series of far-reaching measures investment in the network.

FINANCE DEPARTMENT:
“Finance is to business is as blood is to human” Finance is defined as fund
where as business is defined as an activity controlled with planning raising controlling &
administering of fund used in the business.
In business undertaking or an educational institution or in a hospital or in
an art society or elsewhere management of funds is the primary concern of financial
management.
The modern thinking in financial management today is that financial
manager does not perform the role of score keeper of financial data & information & arranging
funds whenever directed to do so. Rather they occupy key position in top mgt. And play a
dynamic role in solving complex management accords a far greater importance to management
decision making and policy.
Due to liberalization privatization & globalization the subject of financial
management has been changing at a rapid & pace & it has acquired a critical significance now a
days.
The basic requirements for an organisation for its survival & existence are fund
or finance. Financial management is concerned with the managerial decisions that results in
