Here we are, just a few short weeks after the historic WAMC fund drive. Between the locked box that raised half of the money before the on-air drive started and three and a half days of actual fund drive, we ended up with a million dollars in the bank.
The on-air talent was extraordinary. Ray Graf sat across the table from me every morning, Joe Donahue was there with either Sarah LaDuke or Selma Kaplan most of the day; Jessica Bloustein Marshall pitched with Ray at midday; DavidGuistina anchored every morning, making sure that everyone had the weather in those super snowy days; and Brian Shields brought us up to date on the news every afternoon.
The stalwart volunteers showed up, despite the fact that there were days when they couldn’t see two feet in front of them. We couldn’t have survived without them and just didn’t know what we would do if they couldn’t make it in. But there they were. Somehow, someway, in the dink and the dank of the night they

Greetings and salutations, WAMC Land. It’s the time of year that we groan when we see the white stuff falling from the skies, the negative temperatures make us feel like 20° is a day in Hawaii, and nothing is better than hunkering down in the house with a cup of tea. Well, we have a great month of specials and events to keep you company and warm you up.
In celebration of Women’s History Month, on March 5th and 6th at 11AM on both days, we’ll be bringing you a new two-part series entitled The Hidden World of Girls. Groundbreaking writer, actress and comedian, Tina Fey hosts the program. From the dunes of the Sahara to a slumber party in Manhattan, from the dancehalls of Jamaica to a racetrack in Ramallah, Tina Fey takes us around the world into the secret life of girls and the women they become.
Sound-rich, evocative, funny, and powerful --stories of coming of age, rituals and rites of passage, secret identities -- of women who crossed a line, blazed a trail, changed the tide. These specials are produced by Peabody Award-winning producers, The Kitchen Sisters (Davia Nelson and Nikki Silva), in collaboration with NPR reporters and foreign correspondents, independent producers and listeners around the world.
On March 20th at 11AM, we’ll go back in time with She Wrote the Song: Women Composers of Early Popular American Music. The program highlights standards written or co-written by

arrived and so did all the generous gifts from so many people who have become a part of the WAMC story.
There were the coffee people, the bagel people, cheese people and the hundreds of restaurants who gave away premiums of meals. They didn’t have to but they did. These are places that are filled every night, no matter what, but they depend on WAMC. Everywhere I go, the people who run them tell me how proud they are of “our radio station.”
Every evening, the night crew worked their magic, adding thousands of dollars to the growing total. Like Rumpelstiltskin, Ian Pickus and James Farison would turn straw into gold and make my heart beat with joy when I saw that they and their “night people” had done it once more.
And then there were all those people behind the scenes, like Meegan Finnegan, Felicia Berke, Colleen O’Connell, Casey Chapman, and Deena Salzman who would always be there to greet me with the coffee no matter how early I arrived. Everything was ready for the volunteers and staff as they wandered in, bleary eyed.
In the end, though, the real heroes of the fund drive are you. People ask me all the time what our WAMC secret is but we know, don’t we, that if people didn’t come together as a community to make us what we are, there would be no WAMC. There’s no secret. There’s no one person. It has never been anything but the knowledge that together, we built this station one brick and one program at a time. I could cry as I see your names rush by.
Some people will give more than once, wanting to help make a challenge or make the point that in our community, we don’t depend on a few wealthy donors to make it happen. It is, and will always be, each according to their ability. Just think of it -- someone who has nothing gives twenty-five dollars, another generous person puts a thousand dollars into the kitty, saying that she couldn’t live without the station. Imagine that, a thousand dollars.
Back in the early days when we first started the fund drives, the then Mayor of Albany, Erastus Corning, wandered in with eight hundred dollars in his pocket and made the first challenge grant. We thought it was more money than we would ever see. We matched it on the radio with just three phones in a few minutes and that’s how the challenge thing began. It is so interesting. A thousand dollar challenge can inspire a virtual frenzy of activity. Humongous grants of five, ten and even twenty-five thousand dollars will come in, sometimes as total surprises. You have no idea how it feels when we see them and know that in the language of the fund drive, “We’re saved, I tell you, we’re saved!”
Thank you. We love you. - Alan

women composers who, in the early decades of American popular song, had to struggle for the limelight, as women had to in so many areas of American life. Some of the highlights from the program are Dorothy Fields partnering with Jimmy McHugh and Jerome Kern to give us classics such as "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" and "The Way You Look Tonight", and Una Mae Carlisle, a teen protege of Fats Waller who went on to score hits with "Walkin' By the River" and "I See a Million People" (recorded by Peggy Lee with Benny Goodman).
And it doesn’t stop there! Not only do we have specials on air, but we have two Women’s History Month events that WAMC and 51% are a part of. On March 8th, the station and 51% are community sponsors of One Woman, One World, which is celebrating the 104th International Women's Day in Saratoga Springs, New York. 51% host Allison Dunne will be there conducting behind the scenes interviews, I’ll be at our table to talk about the station, and an amazing group of female intellectuals, authors, and politicians will be conduction “TED-style” talks throughout the day. Anyone interested in attending can learn more by going to www.nycelebrateswomen.com.
Then, two days later on March 10th in partnership with the New York Council for the Humanities, we’ll explore the upcoming 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New York State. The public is invited to The Linda to attend this panel discussion moderated by 51% host Allison Dunne. During the event we’ll learn about the origins of both women’s and black suffrage in our history.
So, I do hope you’ll enjoy our specials on and off the air this month. - Katie

The Importance of Knowing Your Personal Net WorthProvided by RBC Wealth Management and Thomas E. Brockley
What are you worth – financially, that is? Knowing the answer is an important first step in getting your financial house in order. You can’t be effective planning for tomorrow until you know where you stand today.
Your net worth is what you own, less what you owe. It is determined by adding your liquid and illiquid assets (such as household and personal possessions, bank accounts, investment accounts, 401k and IRA accounts, business interests, cash value insurance policies and the market value of your home) and subtracting your liabilities (your mortgage balance outstanding, car loans, student loans, etc). The difference between your assets and liabilities is your net worth.
A comprehensive review of your net worth sets the foundation for effective planning and provides a tangible barometer for better money management. An accurate net worth statement helps you identify the value and efficiency of your assets and liabilities. Here are a few examples:
Cash flow and liquidity – Those who know their personal net worth are more likely to spend, borrow and save sensibly.
Titling of assets – How you own your assets is important. The wrong ownership arrangement can be problematic and can have a major effect on your family’s long term financial future.
Beneficiary designations – Conduct a beneficiary review of all qualified assets in your household to ensure they are aligned with your estate planning objectives. These include employer sponsored retirement plans, IRAs, and life insurance policies.
Composition – This is the balance between your cash producing and non-cash producing assets. An accurate assessment will reveal items of concern, such as lack of liquidity or inadequate diversification. An undiversified balance sheet is a red-flag.
Business interests – If you are an owner, what’s the business worth? How is the organization structured? If succession planning is a consideration, is a buy-sell agreement in force and up to date? Consider employing the services of a business valuation specialist to get a clear and realistic appraisal of what the business is worth if you were prepared to sell today.
As a rule, your net worth should be recalculated annually as part of an annual financial physical. Take steps today to assess where you stand, and don’t be afraid to consult with a professional team of advisors for advice on helping preserve and enhance your balance sheet going forward.
