Not only did senior Justin Mazur earn GLIAC Pitcher of the Year and three All-Region honors this season, but he also made the GLIAC All-Academic Team for the fourth time in his career. His 4.00 grade-point average in the Winter 2010 semester placed him on the WSU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.

Wayne State’s celebration of 35 years of women’s athletics culminated with “W” Day on Saturday, April 24. Among the activities were sidewalk painting, a five-kilometer run/walk, the unveiling of the Club 35 commemorative statue outside the Matthaei, and a softball doubleheader between the Warriors and the Grand Valley State Lakers.

One of the five spring teams to compete at the NCAA Championships was the softball team, which advanced to the Division II championship tournament for the second time in program history. Leading the charge was senior All-America pitcher Casey hanes, who posted a 42-8 record and a 0.58 earned-run average in 2010.

Senior elaina hogle earned her third GLIAC Women’s Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Year award as her team won the GLIAC Championship this past February in Detroit and went on to a runner-up finish at nationals. The men’s team finished second at the conference meet and third at the NCAA meet in March.

From the Director

As soon as all the Spring NCAA

participant institutions were announced,

I knew the student-athletes and coaches

of our programs had achieved something

“special.” Simply put, WSU had realized its own version of a “high

five” with each spring team earning a berth in their respective

NCAA tournament. It is an unprecedented accomplishment for

WSU Athletics. It also propelled athletics to its second highest

point total (454.5) ever in the National Association of Collegiate

Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Directors’ Cup Standings just one

year after our all time mark (499.5). Not bad!

Since that ranking is really a measurement of the overall success

of the athletic program in comparison to the other 295 Division

II institutions in the country, the “back-to-back” accomplishment

is a nice acknowledgement of competitive consistency. Our

competitors respect WSU because of what we have achieved.

And that success is not an exception. It is an expectation which is

the result of hard-work, sacrifice and the realization we match-up

with the elite programs in the country.

That success transcends team rosters. It also takes a

commitment from trainers, strength and conditioning personnel,

academic advisors and athletic staff. Singular sport success can

occur by destiny…or fate. But consistent proficiency is not the

daughter of luck.

Importantly however, this spring success is not intended

to overshadow earlier achievements – the Division II football

player of the year in Joique Bell, swimming’s second (women)

and third (men) place finish in the country, volleyball’s rise to a

second consecutive GLIAC tournament berth, men’s basketball

advancement in tournament play, the CHA women’s hockey

student-athlete of the year in Christine Jefferson, or Slava

Zingerman’s unmatched fencing record. Two student-athletes

(Matthew Laschuk and Kristina Susalla) were also recognized at

their respective national championships as the participants with

the highest GPA among all competitors. Not surprisingly, the brief

glimpse backward (for only a moment) is remarkable.

But if this missive was simply about statistical achievements, I

could have formatted this article by just listing impressive finishes.

It is really about some truly dedicated young men and women

whose competitive successes are overshadowed by a prideful

realization of who they are…and who they represent. A brief story

illustrates my point.

After years in athletics I have been to countless motels/hotels

and have eaten my share of not-so remarkable “road meals.” To

me the list is dizzyingly numbing. But that’s also why a letter

from a hotel general manager in Chillicothe, Ohio seems so, well,

unusual.

The referenced location was the site of the GLIAC baseball

tournament earlier this year. Wayne State, and some other

conference institutions, stayed at the motel. In the monotony and

vagrancies of everyday life, the proprietors had happened to meet

many members of the WSU baseball team. Their impression – they

were respectful, polite, engaging and “took pride in representing

their University” (their quote). They penned those sentiments

in a letter to President Noren. In today’s modern society, I am

flummoxed as to which was more unusual – the time and effort

to write and send the letter or the contrast with so many other

athletic programs we read about in the media. I appreciate the

magnanimity of the gesture.

Somewhere else in the pages of the Warrior Within you will

read about the high scholastic achievements of our athletic

programs. That too deserves recognition. These examples are

not the exceptions. This is the Wayne State athletic department.

Those same young people who exude pride in that uniform take

special care that they too represent you. Not bad…not bad at all.

So what do you say? How about a “high five”?

The unveiling ceremony began as three outstanding current WSU female student-athletes presented varsity letters to alumni of the 1970s who participated in athletics at WSU but never received the golden “W” in recognition of their athletic sucess. A statue commemorating the celebration of 35 years of women’s athletics was unveiled at the entrance of the Matthaei building. The monument symbolizes the long struggle women fought to be afforded the same opportunities as their male counterparts and to get their “foot in the door” of intercollegiate athletics. A walkway was also installed leading from the statue to the Hall of Fame entrance. Designated as the “women’s walk,” it epitomizes the success women’s athletics has had at WSU. Not only have women made themselves an integral part of athletics but several are permanent fixtures in the WSU Hall of Fame.

W Day

During the 2009-2010 academic term WSU Athletics proudly celebrated 35 years of women’s intercollegiate athletics. The year-long celebration culminated with the inaugural “W” Day on April 24 which brought together student-athletes (past and present), community members, campus representatives, and athletic staff. The event not only honored the almost 1,000 women who have competed in intercollegiate athletics at Wayne State, it celebrated the great strides women’s athletics has made in the past 35-plus years.

On the morning of “W” Day, Wayne State student-athletes teamed up with the local environmental organization, “Greening of Detroit,” to plant 35 trees on the athletic campus along Trumbull Avenue.

In the week leading up to “W” Day, all 16 athletic teams designed and painted a sidewalk square on the main walkway through the athletic campus. The sidewalk, now known as “spirit walk,” symbolizes the spirit of WSU student-athletes, the campus population, and local community.

swam on four top-eight relays and placed fourth and sixth in the 50 and 100 freestyles, respectively.

Cayce Bolt (Sterling Hts., Mich.) took second place in one-meter diving and third in on the three-meter board. Both WSU squads benefitted from a deeper diving corps, as the Warriors tallied 86 points in women’s diving and 43 points on the men’s side.

A total of 23 student-athletes (12 men, 11 women) earned All-America status, either First Team (first-eighth) or Honorable Mention (ninth-16th). A full listing of WSU’s national champions is available on page 13.

Swimming & Diving Recap

The Wayne State women’s swimming and diving team finished in first place at the 2010 GLIAC Championships, wrapping up the four-day meet Feb. 13 at the Matthaei with a 118-point victory over Grand Valley State (783.5).

The Warriors (901.5), who broke the school record of 869 points set in 2009 as well as the GLIAC record of 897 set by GVSU last year, earned their fourth conference title in program history, all of which have come in the last five years. They set 15 pool records, six school records and seven GLIAC championship meet records in addition to collecting 14 individual and relay championships.

Sean Peters was presented with his fourth career GLIAC Women’s Coach of the Year award, and senior Elaina Hogle (Kentwood, Mich.) was voted GLIAC Women’s Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Year for the third straight season.

Women’s Swimming Wins GLIAC Title, Men Place Second

The Wayne State swimming and diving programs again proved to be national contenders at the 2010 NCAA Division II Championships, as the four-day meet concluded March 13 at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, Ohio.

For the second year in a row, the WSU women’s squad finished in second place, accumulating a school-record 531 points. The Warriors trailed Drury (657) which earned its third women’s national title in the last four years, but finished with a 213-point advantage over UC San Diego (318). Wayne State set 12 school records at the meet.

The women’s team claimed seven individual national championships and an eighth NCAA title in the 200 medley relay, as the foursome of Sara Franklin (Caro, Mich.), Courtney Roberts (Milan, Mich.), Ana Gonzalez Pena (Gijon, Spain) and Ashley Corriveau (Metamora, Mich.) broke the NCAA meet record (1:41.46).

Gonzalez Pena and Roberts were dominant in the two breaststroke events. Roberts won her second consecutive championship in the 100 breaststroke, while Gonzalez Pena finished second. Gonzalez Pena would later win the 200 breaststroke, breaking Roberts’ school record as Roberts came in third.

Franklin earned her first individual NCAA championship in the 100 backstroke, and Cassie Chetosky (Shelby Twp., Mich.) became the first female diver in WSU history to win a national title as she took first place on the three-meter board.

The standout Warrior on the women’s side, however, was Ashley St. Andrew (Grand Rapids, Mich.), who won all three distance freestyle events.

St. Andrew, who became WSU’s first female national swimming champion in history last season, successfully defended her titles in the 500 and 1000 free events. She also won the 1650 free and placed third in the 200 free. Her 76 points earned in four individual events exceeded the four-day totals of 22 entire teams.

The WSU women’s team, which surpassed its 2009 point total (453.5), has steadily improved its performance at the NCAA Championships each year. The Warriors placed 24th in 2006, 10th in 2007 and sixth in 2008 prior to their consecutive second-place finishes.

Meanwhile, the Wayne State men’s team, which moved up from fifth to third on the third day, held its position on day four to achieve its third top-three finish in four years. The Warriors totaled 343 points and set four school records. Drury amassed 538 points to claim its sixth straight national men’s title.

The third-place finish for Wayne State was its sixth consecutive top-eight performance at nationals.

Joaquin Abascal Gallegos (Madrid, Spain) became a two-time national champion, winning the 400 individual medley and the 200 breaststroke. He posted second-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM. In his four individual events, Abascal Gallegos scored a combined 74 points, eclipsing the totals of 12 teams.

Abascal Gallegos was Wayne State’s co-leader with seven First Team All-America honors. He shared that distinction with Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), who

The men’s team, meanwhile, battled to a second-place finish (710.5). WSU was in third and 62.5 points

behind Ashland going into the final day, but came back to overtake the Eagles. The Warriors, who broke five pool records, have finished first or second every year since 2001.

Fencing and Baseball Recaps

The old adage that “records were made to be broken” certainly rang true for the 2010 Wayne State baseball team. Eight team records, six individual single-season school records and 10 career marks fell as the Warriors were crowned Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament champions and qualified for the NCAA Regional for the third time since 2005.

After finishing in first place with a 23-8 conference record, the Warriors went 3-0 including two wins over Ashland to claim their first tournament title in program history. Wayne State, which had to come from behind in two of the three victories, punched its ticket to the NCAA Midwest Regional, hosted by the University of Southern Indiana.

Northern Kentucky edged WSU, 2-1, in the opening round before Wayne State was eliminated in a 12-10 slugfest by USI, which went on to win the Division II national championship.

Second-year head coach Ryan Kelley was rewarded for his efforts with the 2010 GLIAC Baseball Coach of the Year award after guiding the team to a 32-20 overall record. In addition, senior Justin Mazur (Macomb, Mich.) was named GLIAC Pitcher of the Year.

The conference leader in strikeouts (73), complete games (8) and opponents’ average (.258), Mazur was tied for second in starts (12), second in innings (85.1) and fifth in ERA (4.22). With an 18-4 career record, Mazur possesses the highest career winning percentage (.818) in school history.

Also among the Warriors rewriting the school record book was senior Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont.), the First Team All-Region outfielder who set three Wayne State single-season and six career records in 2010. His 87 hits and 62 runs scored – both school records – ranked second and third in the conference, respectively. He batted.424, the best single-season average since Bob Inman’s .474 in 1961, surpassed Frank Jeney (2002-05) as WSU’s all-time hits leader, and became the only player in program history to hit over .400 three times.

Wayne State’s other corner outfielder, senior and First Team All-Region selection Paul LaMantia (Tecumseh, Ont.), tied for the conference lead with a school-record 13 home runs, one of three single-season marks he set. LaMantia (.415) and LaPensee are just the seventh set of teammates in WSU history to hit .400 in the same season.

Other standouts include junior catcher Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich.), the GLIAC leader in runners caught stealing for the second straight year (16), who batted .376 with nine home runs and 58 RBI. Senior pitcher Brady Cooper (Allen Park, Mich.), one of four Warriors with six victories in 2010, finished his career with a 2.86 strikeout/walk ratio, fifth-best in school history.

Wayne State accumulated nine GLIAC postseason awards and 15 All-Region honors altogether between the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, the American Baseball Coaches Association, and Daktronics, Inc.

Baseball Sweeps Conference Championships In 2010

Ryan LaPensee set three WSU single-season records and six career marks in his senior campaign.

The 2009-10 Wayne State fencing season will be remembered as the year that Slava Zingerman (Ashkelon, Israel) claimed his fourth consecutive All-America award after placing seventh at the NCAA Championship. Zingerman, who won three straight NCAA titles (2007-09), became only the second person in NCAA men’s epee history to win three consecutive titles since the NCAA began competition in 1941.

Zingerman, the lone senior on the men’s squad, took first place at Northwestern’s Remenyik Open, the WSU Danosi Open as well as the Midwest Fencing Conference championship. He had a 45-7 dual meet regular-season record and became WSU’s all-time epee wins leader.

Junior Jakub Gibczynski (Lodz, Poland) made his third consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championship, placing 19th in the men’s sabre competition. Gibczynski compiled a 65-3 dual meet record during the regular season.

Three members of the foil team - Tim Mulligan (Concord, Mich.), Raffi Nersessian (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Michael Ramlow (Midland, Mich.) - each had a winning record during the season.

The Warrior men’s team had a 17-9 dual meet record and finished fifth out of 20 squads at the conference championship.

The women’s fencing team placed fourth at the conference championship, and at the NCAA Championship Wayne State (men’s and women’s combined) finished 15th. It was WSU’s 15th top-15 team finish in the last 17 years for Maestro Jerzy Radz.

Freshman Olivia Dobbs (Detroit, Mich.) was a Second Team All-American after placing eighth in the foil competition. Dobbs had a 67-13 dual meet record during the regular season and was the individual champion at WSU’s Danosi Open.

Three members of the epee team - Desiree Kelly (Ferndale, Mich.), Charlotte Reed (Wyandotte, Mich.) and Amanda Van’t Wout (Guelph, Ont.) - each had at least 30 wins, while Rachel Broderick (Fraser, Mich.) and Tiaja Sabrie (Midland, Mich.) concluded the regular season with winning records in dual meet competition.

Two sabre competitors - Katie Bryce (Rochester, Mich.) and Anna Kotov (West Bloomfield, Mich.) - both participated in the NCAA Midwest Regional after having successful regular seasons.

For the second time in school history, the WSU softball squad advanced to the NCAA Division II Softball Championship tournament. The Warriors had one regional title, 2003, from their first 15 trips to the NCAA’s. In addition to its 16th NCAA tournament appearance, this was the fifth consecutive for WSU.

Earlier in May, Wayne State served as a regional host for the fourth time in school history. WSU defeated Quincy (6-0), Saginaw Valley (9-0 in 5 innings) and SVSU (5-0) to win the NCAA Midwest Regional #1 title. In the NCAA Midwest Super Regional, WSU disposed of Ashland twice (4-0, 7-1) to advance to the Elite Eight.

The 52 wins by the Warriors this year eclipsed the previous school record of 43 set by the 1993 squad, while this year’s squad also claimed the GLIAC regular-season title with a 21-5 league ledger. The 2003 team which won the Great Lakes Regional and advanced to the NCAA Championship tournament won 39 games. This year’s senior class has a 168-64 (72%) mark and is the first class in school history with three 40-plus win seasons. The seniors were pitchers Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont.) and Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va.), shortstop Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and outfielder Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont.).

Hanes was voted First Team All-America by both the NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) and Daktronics (voted on by SIDs) as well as earning GLIAC and Midwest Region Pitcher of the Year accolades. Hanes compiled a 42-8 record with 19 shutouts and 366 strikeouts to go along with a nation’s best 0.58 earned-run average.

She concluded her collegiate career ranked fifth in wins (126) in NCAA Division II history, sixth in complete games (130) and innings pitched (1,062.7), tied-for-sixth in games

pitched (179), seventh in shutouts (60), tied-for-ninth in games started (141), and 10th in strikeouts (1,156).

Sophomore right fielder Alison Allen (Redford, Mich.) earned All-America honors from both the NFCA (Third Team) and Daktronics (Second Team) after being voted both GLIAC Player of the Year as well as Midwest Region Player of the Year. Allen batted .402 with 90 hits (second-most in school history) along with a WSU-record 136 total bases. She had 26 extra-base hits including 15 doubles and nine home runs.

Sophomore infielder Kristina Susalla (Garden City, Mich.) received the prestigious NCAA Elite 88 Award, an award founded by the NCAA at the start of the 2009-10 season, is presented to the student-athlete with the highest

cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 88 championships.

The Warriors began the season ranked 20th in the nation (NFCA) and first in the GLIAC in pre-season coaches polls. After compiling a 4-2 record in the Decatur (Ala.) Chill-Out, with losses to North Georgia and North Alabama but in-region wins over Northern Kentucky, Southern Indiana and Indianapolis, WSU concluded the month of February by winning the Catawba Invitational (Salisbury, N.C.). Wayne State went 7-0 in Salisbury including a pair of one-run extra inning triumphs over Armstrong Atlantic.

An 11-3 spring break trip to the Rebel Spring Games preceded the start of conference play. Following a 10-day layoff, the Warriors were swept at Ashland but went 16-1 in the next 17 contests including a home sweep of the Eagles (3-1, 5-0). After a setback at Tiffin, Wayne State had a 9-1 mark in the final 10 regular-season games including a sweep at Detroit Mercy.

Even though the GLIAC Tournament was rained out, WSU received the Midwest Region’s No. 1 seed. The Warriors outscored their opponents 23-4 in the four NCAA Regional contests with three shutout victories by Hanes including a five-inning no-hitter vs. SVSU on day two.

In addition to Hanes and Allen receiving GLIAC of-the-Year honors, three other WSU players earned First Team All-League accolades: Banton, sophomore first baseman Becca Ryan (Westland, Mich.) and redshirt freshman catcher Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont.).

Banton became a three-time All-GLIAC performer having earned Second Team All-League honors a year ago after being named to the All-GLIAC Honorable Mention squad in 2008. She tied-for-fifth in the GLIAC in hits with 58 and was among the national leaders and led the GLIAC in sac bunts (27) and fielding assists (155).

Ryan moved up to the All-GLIAC First Team after being a Second Team selection in 2009. She tied-for-second in the GLIAC in doubles (15), while ranking tied-for-third in hits (66) and eighth in runs scored (38). Ryan is among

the national leaders in toughest to strikeout (9 times in 211 plate appearances). She led WSU with 10 multiple-RBI games and set the school record for fielding putouts in a season (468).

Omelanchuk earned her first All-GLIAC honor after missing all but the first seven games of 2009 season due to injury. She was second in the GLIAC in throwing out base stealers (10-33), while ranking third in both walks (25) and in fielding putouts (389), and tied-for-third in sacrifice flies (3). Omelanchuk had an 11-game hitting streak and WSU went 45-9 when she started behind the plate.

LeClair and sophomore third baseman Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont.) were both named to the All-GLIAC Honorable Mention team.

LeClair finished tied-for-second in the GLIAC in doubles (15), third in sac bunts (15), fifth in hits (63), tied-for-fifth in runs (40), and seventh in total bases (95). She batted .349 (37-106) with runners on base and was second on the team with 14 two-out RBI.

Stanley, a 2009 Daktronics All-Midwest Region First Team selection, finished second in the GLIAC in walks (26) and sac flies (4), fourth in fielding assists (129), sixth in hits (61) and 10th in RBI (34).

She was among the national leaders in toughest to strikeout (10 in 234 plate appearances). Stanley had 17 multiple-hit contests, while recording a hit in 43 of 65 starts in 2010 having started all 121 games at third base in her two-year career.

Junior designated player Rachel Spaccarotelli (Ray, Mich.) had a .662 slugging percentage which included a school-record three home runs in one contest (April 6 at Hillsdale), while freshman center fielder Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont.) led the squad with 36 RBI despite batting primarily seventh or eighth. Sophomore second baseman Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich.) was second on the squad in sac bunts (18) and third in both fielding assists (103) and fielding putouts (118).

The Wayne State University softball team was crowned the NCAA Midwest Super Regionalchampion following a pair of victories over Ashland University on May 21-22 in Detroit.

Golf and Tennis Recaps

The WSU men’s golf program again inserted itself into conversations pertaining to perennial national contenders, finishing 14th in its second consecutive team appearance in the NCAA Division II Championship this past May in Noblesville, Ind.

The Warriors, who had never qualified for the NCAA Championship as a team until last season, paved their way to nationals this year with a second-place finish at the NCAA Super Regional earlier in the month in Duncan, Okla.

Mike Horn, who earned his third career GLIAC Men’s Golf Coach of the Year honor, guided WSU to its fourth consecutive team appearance in the Super Regional and its sixth in the last seven years. After finishing third at the GLIAC Championship last October, the Warriors enjoyed a successful spring season, winning the Wisconsin-Parkside Invitational in March and the Great Lakes Regional at Purgatory Golf Course in Noblesville in April.

Wayne State, which made its debut in the Golf World/NIKE Golf Division II Coaches Poll in February, finished the season ranked 14th nationally. The Warriors were also 23rd in the final Golfstat rankings.

Redshirt senior Joe Juszczyk (Dearborn Heights, Mich.) was named to the PING All-America Second Team by the GCAA. Juszczyk, an Honorable Mention All-America selection in 2008, tied for 14th at the 2010 NCAA Championship. He finished with a season average score of 73.38 and two victories, placing in the top 10 in nine events during the year.

He and sophomore Aaron Peterson (Ann Arbor, Mich.) were among the recipients of PING All-Midwest Region honors from the GCAA. Peterson had three victories to his credit this season, including his win at the Motor City Invitational to close out the fall campaign. He won the Tiffin Invitational in April and joined Juszczyk among those tied for 12th place at the NCAA Super Regional. Peterson averaged 74.89 strokes per 18 holes in his first full season with the Warriors.

Juszczyk and Peterson were two of four Warriors to receive All-GLIAC honors as well. Juszczyk was named to the First Team for the second consecutive season. Peterson and sophomore Eric Johnson (Marquette, Mich.) received Second Team accolades, and sophomore Jack Mitroka (Riverview, Mich.) was voted Honorable Mention.

Golfers Compete On National Stage In 2010

The Wayne State men’s tennis team enjoyed one of its best seasons in recent memory in 2009-10. The Warriors finished with an overall record of 15-7 and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in the past 10 years.

After winning just six matches in 2008-09, WSU’s 15 wins, the most for Wayne State since 2004, represented the largest single-season turnaround in school history. The Warriors also finished in second place at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament which was WSU’s best showing at the event since 1992.

Leading the way for Wayne State were four standouts who earned all-league honors, as well as second-year head coach Bryan Morrow who was selected GLIAC Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year.

For the second consecutive season, sophomore Bertrand Moulin (Lyon, France) was a First Team All-GLIAC selection. Moulin sported a singles record of 20-4 and a doubles mark of 17-5 playing primarily with fellow All-GLIAC choice Britton Steele (Novi, Mich.). In conference play, Moulin was 6-1. He boasted a singles winning streak of 14 matches during the season and was ranked as the No. 7 singles competitor in the Midwest Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Steele, a Second Team All-GLIAC honoree, joined Moulin to form the fourth-ranked doubles pairing in the Midwest Region by the ITA. The duo lost just three conference matches all season and had an overall record of 15-5. In singles play, Steele registered six victories from the second flight.

Also earning Second Team All-GLIAC accolades was freshman Thomas Ducret (Paris, France), who went 16-5 playing primarily at No. 3 singles and recorded nine doubles victories.

Senior Kevin Turnbull (Shelby Twp., Mich.) concluded his career at Wayne State by playing his way to an All-GLIAC Honorable Mention selection. Turnbull competed with three different teammates throughout the year for a career-high 14 doubles wins from the second and third flights.

In what has become the norm for head coach Sheila Snyder and the Wayne State University women’s tennis team, the Warriors had another outstanding spring season that culminated with the squad making its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in the past six seasons and winning its first round match for the second consecutive year. The Warriors enjoyed a record of 8-1 in the spring, finishing the 2009-10 season with an overall mark of 16-6.

After a four-month break, WSU traveled to Orlando in March and defeated Birmingham-Southern (8-1), Saint Michael’s (8-1) and Saint Thomas Aquinas (9-0). The Warriors were able to keep their momentum rolling when they returned to Detroit thanks to a 9-0 win over Ohio Dominican. At the end of the regular season, which concluded with wins over Oakland (7-0), Niagara (7-2) and Valparaiso (6-1), Wayne State found itself ranked as the No. 4 team in the Midwest Region by the NCAA which led to its postseason berth.

In the first round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Wayne State squared off against GLIAC rival Ferris State. The Warriors downed the Bulldogs 5-2 to advance to the round of 32 against Northwood, the region’s top seed.

Despite several close bouts and wins by the doubles pairing of Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ont.) and Kristina Goranskaya (Thornhill, Ont.) and a singles victory by Goranskaya, Northwood defeated WSU 5-2 to end Wayne State’s season.

Several Warriors enjoyed career-years for Wayne State in 2009-10 including Gill, who was 21-4 in singles matches. Gill’s 64 career singles victories is a school record. Just a junior, she will have another season to build on her record.

Along with Gill, four other women had winning singles records including Goranskaya at 20-4, McCall Monte (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) at 13-5, Jennifer Bradford (Detroit, Mich.) at 13-5 and Debora Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) at 12-9. Milena Vuksanovic (Pancevo, Serbia) also won a career-high 10 matches.

Wayne State’s three main doubles teams all had winning records as well. Gill and Goranskaya were 9-0, Monte and Vuksanovic went 7-2 while Bradford and Correa finished at 11-6.

Wayne State senior defenseman Christine Jefferson (Nepean, Ont.) was voted the College Hockey America Student-Athlete of the Year, the league announced at the annual CHA banquet on Thursday, March 4 at Ford Field in Detroit.

Jefferson, an elementary education major at WSU, maintains a 3.86 grade-point average. On the ice, the

three-year captain ranks in the top 10 all-time at WSU for goals, assists and points by a defenseman. She was named to the WSU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) all seven semesters including four 4.00 terms and has been actively involved in numerous community service projects.

Jefferson is the second Warrior in program history to earn CHA Student-Athlete of the Year honors, joining Jessica Snelgrove who was given the award in 2006. She was also one of a league-high 12 WSU student-athletes named to the 2010 CHA All-Academic Team.

Wayne State University senior goaltender Lindsey Park (Thornhill, Ont.) and women’s hockey head coach Jim Fetter helped the West beat the East 10-6 in the NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge on Friday, April 9 at Ford Field in Detroit.

The NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge features top male and female college hockey student-athletes from across the nation in an East versus West skills competition which includes puck control relay, hardest shot, fastest skater, rapid-fire shooting, accuracy shooting and penalty shots.

Fetter served as an assistant coach on the West squad, while Park was the female goaltender for the victorious West team. Park stopped all eight shots on goal in the rapid-fire shooting segment of the competition between East and West region teams of men and women.

To be eligible for selection to the Frozen Four Skills Challenge, all players must have exhausted their collegiate eligibility and be nominated by their head coach. The players were selected by representatives from the American Hockey Coaches Association, the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee and NCAA national office staff. Each competitor received a complete set of equipment and a full uniform from Bauer Hockey.

While senior guard Brooke Bowers’ (Delphos, Ohio) college basketball career is now over, her future in sports may just be getting started. Bowers was recently selected to attend the NCAA’s Career In Sports Forum from May 11-14 in Indianapolis.

The NCAA Career in Sports Forum is a four-day event through which student-athletes will explore and be educated on careers in sports with a primary focus on collegiate athletics. Through the use of dual tracks, participants will examine the key functions of coaching and administration in the areas of academics, compliance, facilities, life skills, marketing and sports information.

Foundational skills such as communication, networking, recruiting, managing culture, transitioning and budgeting will be covered with participants.

“This is a great honor and a wonderful opportunity for Brooke to jumpstart the next phase of her career,” said Wayne State head coach Gloria Bradley.

Bowers ended her Wayne State career ranking first in three-pointers made (195), fourth in games played (109), sixth in steals (203), eighth in points scored (1,154), eighth in minutes played (2,789), ninth in made field goals (409) and ninth in three-point percentage (33.3). She is the only player in school history to lead the team in three-pointers made all four years.

Two Wayne State University sophomore student-athletes received NCAA Elite 88 awards this season. Swimmer Matthew Laschuk (Tecumseh, Ont.) was

presented with the award at a recognition banquet March 9 prior to the start of the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships in Canton, Ohio. Softball student-athlete Kristina Susalla (Garden City, Mich.) was recognized May 26 at an event held prior to the start

of the NCAA Division II Softball Championship Tournament in St. Joseph, Mo.

The Elite 88, an award founded by the NCAA at the start of the 2009-10 season, is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 88 championships. The student-athlete must be at least a sophomore and in at least his or her second year of competition at his or her current institution.

Laschuk, a chemistry/pre-medicine major, and Susalla, a psychology major, have been named to the WSU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) every semester.

Athletics News and Notes

Dr. John Telford, an All-America track star at Wayne State University in the 1950s and later a civil rights activist and educator in the Detroit area, recently penned an autobiography entitled “A Life on the Run – Seeking and Safeguarding Social Justice.”

Raised in Detroit and still a resident, Telford began his professional career as an English teacher and track coach at Detroit Southeastern High School. Telford retired in 1991 as the deputy superintendent of schools in Rochester and went on to become an executive director in Detroit Public Schools. More recently, he served as the superintendent of Madison District Schools. He is considered by some to be a controversial figure, having been an outspoken advocate for civil rights throughout his career.

A former director of the Division of Basic Education at Macomb Community College and a published poet, he has also taught at Wayne State and Oakland. Wayne State University presented Telford with the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2001.

Telford, inducted into the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1978, was the first runner from the state of Michigan to break the 47-second mark in the quarter mile. In 1957, he was ranked second nationally in that event. He holds three degrees from Wayne State, including his doctorate, and is the author of “The Longest Dash,” a book of training tips for athletes who run the quarter mile.

Wayne State University swimmers Ashley St. Andrew (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) were among the 12 student-athletes selected to receive the Winter 2010 GLIAC Commissioner’s Awards.

The awards, sponsored by Meijer, Inc., are presented after the Fall, Winter, and Spring athletic seasons to six male and six female student-athletes that excel both in the classroom and on the fields of play.

“These 12 student-athletes that represent, their institutions, the GLIAC, and their respective communities truly embody the term student-athlete,” stated GLIAC Comissioner Dell Robinson. “Their pursuit of excellence on and off field serves as a monumental testament of the talented young leaders we have in this conference. I will look to them to be the leaders of the future.”

Development

Doing It For The “W”One characteristic that bonds most every student-athlete I have met has been a competitive nature that is instilled

by sport. No matter what the event or obstacle a student-athlete participates in, it becomes a competition and nothing short of a ‘W’ will suffice. At Wayne State this competitive nature is displayed in all facets of being a student-athlete. It is evident in the classroom

where student-athletes continue to have graduation and grade point average marks well above the campus average. It is evident in the community where Wayne State athletes volunteer an impressive amount of time in a community that

needs it now more than ever. And it is evident by the performance on the field where the 16 teams have been pushing us hard to the upper 10 percent of participating schools in the NACDA Cup for five of the last six years.

But while some successes can be measured in wins and losses, you find when you get older that the effort you put into competition is the true ‘W’. Whether a person was a Tartar that hoisted a championship trophy or a Warrior that struggled just to get to the middle of the pack, it was the hard work and teamwork that each person takes with them from his or her Wayne State experience that creates successes down the road in life.

Having recently transitioned from student-athlete and graduate assistant to Development Director in the athletic department, it has been a pleasure to meet and hear from people who have put on the ‘W’ before me and hear

about their experiences. While not everyone I have met can say they won a championship, everyone has certainly been able to share some moments from their time at Wayne State that would classify as a ‘W’. From meeting a

lifelong friend to becoming the first person in a family to get a degree, Wayne State has been the place where many stories of success have originated.

The newly formed “W Club” (found on the back page of the Warrior Within) is a way to show an appreciation for your time spent at Wayne State. The foundation to success was built by the past, but it is up to alumni to support the current and future student-athletes that will one day be able to look back and be proud about

their experience at Wayne State as well. The “W Club” aids in providing the resources that make the Wayne State experience a championship one.
