An Overview- Composting is a controlled decomposition of organic material

    through heat.

The waste collected with the help of rag pickers can be used to

prepare the compost which can be then sold to the variousindustries.

Also, it will help the rag pickers in obtaining an employment.

In Mumbai itself, there are more than 50,000 rag pickers.

The rag picking industry is not organized.

The rag picker earns at an average about Rs 10-50 a day. And it isbecause of several middlemen that they lose out big time.

from getting exploited by the middlemen andhelp them in earning more. Also, the compostthen prepared by the waste submitted by therag pickers can be sold to the various

Why Composting ? 75% of the total waste generated in India is organic in

    nature.

The megacities like Mumbai, Chennai etc. are planning tomove trash from landfills.

Commercial composting, will be key to achieving this.

As concern about landfill space increases, worldwideinterest in recycling by means of composting is growing.

Compost is generally recommended as an additive to soil, supplying humus and nutrients.

Contd. A few of the places that it is used are in gardens,

    landscaping, horticulture, and agriculture.

The compost soil itself is beneficial for the land in manyways, including as a soil conditioner, a fertilizer to add vitalhumus or humic acids, and as a natural pesticide for soil.

Here lies the Opportunity Composting of city wastes is a legal requirement provided

under the Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSW)Rules 2000 for all municipal bodies in the country.

But the central and the state governments have not shownany kind of preparedness for it.

Also, they have not been able to grasp it as anenvironmental and social good that requires official

    support which can generate employment.

    Contd.

The real economic benefits of compost use, like improved soilquality, water retention, biological activity, micronutrientcontent and improved pest resistance of crops, are ignored bypolicy-makers and fertiliser producers.

Composting has proven to be a feasible and practical manuremanagement option for farmers. It can be implemented withexisting farm equipment, dedicated turners or in-vessel systems.

So, with the continuous increase in the trash in metros and theregulation of waste in countries like Canada. The Indiangovernment is bound to take the waste management moreseriously in the times to come. This will result in the increasedmarket for the compost.

Implementation The operation can start from any metro city, say Mumbai.

The collection centers can be made in the different parts ofthe city.

Rag pickers will be encouraged to deposit the wastecollected in these centers.

The rag pickers will be given proper employment with thecompany and they will be able to earn more as there will be

no middlemen. The waste collected should be used to form the compost.

The compost then can be sold to the various interestedparties.
