Congratulations. You’ve taken the first step
and decided to marry or have a civil
partnership. Your next big decision is to
choose the venue where you’d like the
ceremony to take place.
Here in Gateshead we have a number of
venues that are registered to hold marriage
and civil partnership ceremonies.
A list of approved venues is given below.

Your next step is to give formal notice of your intention to marry – this is called ‘giving legal notice’.
Giving legal noticeTo give legal notice of your intended marriage you must:
• Visit the Register Office in the area where you live• Intend to marry within 12 months• Both of you must have lived in a registration district in England or Wales for at least seven clear days immediately before giving notice at the register office (the day you take up residence and the day you give notice is not included).
If you both live in the same district, you should both attend your local register office. If you live in different registration districts then each of you will need to give notice separately in your own area. After giving notice you must wait a further 28 clear days before the marriage can take place (for example, if notice is given on 1st July the marriage may take place on or after 29th July). This 28 day period could be extended to 70 days if one of the parties is subject to immigration laws.
On the 29th day, your Marriage Authority will be issued and printed by the district in which the marriage will take place. Without it, the ceremony cannot take place.
When you attend the Register Office you must bring all the relevant documents with you.
Documents to bring on the day you give notice.
Evidence of Identity and Nationality• A current valid Passport• Birth CertificateAnyone born in the United Kingdom before 1 January 1983 is automatically entitled to British nationality. The nationality of anyone born in the United Kingdom AFTER 1 January 1983 is dependent upon the British nationality of their parents at the time of their birth.
Therefore if you were born after 1 January 1983 and do not have a valid passport you must also produce your Mother’s Birth Certificate as well as your full birth certificate showing parents details. If your mother was not born in the UK please contact Gateshead Register Office for advice.
Places to say ‘I do’ in GatesheadProof of name and addressTo establish address one of the following documents must be provided:

Proof of freedom to marry.
• If divorced - a Decree Absolute must be shown and this must be a certified copy with an official stamp and not a photocopy. A Decree Nisi is not ac-ceptable. If divorced outside the UK you also need a translation of the divorce document. • If widowed – an original Death Certificate must be shown. The person giving notice must be named on the Death Certificate as the wife/widow of, or the husband/widower of the deceased. If not named on the death certificate, you will also need to provide an original copy of the marriage certificate.
Legal name change
• Official Deed Poll - registered with the Royal Courts of Justice. • Change of name deed – the legal document usually issued by a solicitor.
Please note: - we cannot take a notice or marriage without your original documents and we do not want you to have a wasted journey. For more information visit the directgov.uk website
NOTE: If either party is from a country outside the European Economic Area notice will need to be given at a designated register office. Please contact the Register Office for further information.

Marrying in a church
If you wish to be married in a Church of England church you must discuss this with the vicar. Banns
will be called in the church on three consecutive Sundays before the ceremony. The marriage will
also need to be registered by the vicar. There is usually no need to involve the Register Office.
Marrying in a Religious Venue
www.essenceofthemoment.co.uk
Other church or religious building
If you wish to marry in any other religious venue, notice of marriage will need to be given to the
Register Office in the area in which you live. If you and/or your fiancé(e) are a non-EEA national and
you wish to marry in the Anglican Church (the Church of England or the Church in Wales), you will be
required to give legal notice of marriage at your local designated Register Office before your
marriage (Please contact Gateshead register office for further details). Other couples wishing to marry
in the Anglican Church will need to provide specified evidence of British Citizenship or EEA
nationality before completing Church preliminaries, e.g. the banns or common licence process.
Legal declarations
Traditional
I do solemnly declare that I know not of any
lawful impediment why I (your full name) may
not be joined in matrimony to (your partner’s
full name).
Modern
I declare that I know of no legal reason why I
(your full name) may not be joined in marriage
to (your partner’s full name).
Simplified
The registrar asks: “Are you (your full name)
free, lawfully, to marry (your partner’s full
name)? You reply: “I am”.
Contracting words
Traditional
I call upon these persons, here present, to
witness that I (your full name) do take thee
(your partner’s full name) to be my lawful
wedded wife/husband.
Modern
I (your full name), take you (your partner’s full
name) to be my wedded wife/husband.
Simplified
I (your full name) take you/thee (your partner’s
full name) to be my wedded wife/husband.
Vows and Promises While each civil wedding has some common elements, there is plenty of scope to make it a
personal statement of your love and commitment to each other.
The minimum vows for a legal wedding are included below – these are ‘Legal Declarations’ and
‘Contracting Words’. You can choose which version suits you, whether it’s traditional, modern or
simplified.
www.essenceofthemoment.co.uk
As well as being able to marry, same sex couples can choose to have a civil partnership instead. This
gives couples the legal status of “Civil Partner” and gives them the same rights as married couples
for a range of legal matters.
You may choose to register your civil partnership simply, without a ceremony, in the Register Office
in the presence of a Civil Partnership Registrar and your two witnesses.
Alternatively, you may have a ceremony, with guests, in the Register Office, or have a ceremony in
one of the approved premises in Gateshead.
The legal notices are valid for twelve calendar months and you must give notice in the area where
you live. The Registrar in the area where your ceremony is taking place will issue the Civil
Partnership Schedule, which is the legal document that you will be asked to sign on the day of the
formation of your partnership.
On the day, you will be asked to check this document and to sign it in the presence of your two
witnesses and the Civil Partnership Registrar, after reading the legal declaration.
The Words
You are not required to say any legal words. However we will be pleased to include a ceremony and
can offer some choice of words. Here are some examples of what you could say:
“I …………………….… pledge to share my life openly with ……………………… I promise to cherish
and tenderly care for you, to honour and encourage you. I will respect you as an individual and be
true to you through good times and bad. To these things I give you my Word.”
Or
“……… I choose you above all others, to share my life. I promise to honour this pledge as long as I live.”
Since 10th December 2014 Civil Partnership can be
converted to marriage. The conversion can be purely
administrative, or you may wish to have a ceremony
following the administrative process, completing
the declaration on that day. For further information
please contact the register office on 0191 433 3027/8.

Civil partnership

Conversion of Civil Partnership to marriage
Civil marriageA civil marriage ceremony can vary from a simple and dignified ceremony in the Register Office in the
presence of two witnesses, to a more lavish ceremony in a venue that is approved for the holding of
marriage ceremonies.
On the day of your ceremony, you must bring at least two people with you to witness your marriage.
You can choose any relative or friend as long as they are old enough to understand what is taking
place.
If either partner is unable to speak or understand English, an interpreter must be present at the
wedding. This must be discussed before the ceremony with the registrar.
The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 makes provisions to:• Allow same sex couples to marry in a civil ceremony
• Allow same sex couples to marry in a religious ceremony where the religious
organisation has opted in to conduct such ceremonies and the minister of religion agrees
• Enable civil partners to convert their civil partnership to marriage if they wish
• Enable married individuals to change their legal gender without having to end their
marriage
• All register offices and approved premises for civil marriages will automatically be
approved for same sex marriages.
• Religious organisations can hold ceremonies for same sex marriages if they specifically
opt in to do so, with written authorisation from their governing body.
• It is a matter for individual religious organisations whether they wish to hold same sex
marriage ceremonies.
• For further information, please contact the Superintendent Registrar.
Equal marriage/same sex marriages
Same sex couples can now marry following changes to the Marriage Act – this is referred to as equal marriage. Same sex marriages can take place in Gateshead Civic Centre or any licensed venue, but can only take place in a church where the religious organisation has ‘opted in’ and the Minister of Religion agrees.

When you marry at an approved premises we can offer a wider range of personal touches that can be
added to the ceremony to make it more special to you. The internet is a great source of inspiration for
music, readings and song choices. Speak to the Registrar at the time of booking about this.
Music
Music greatly enhances the ceremony and can be played at appropriate times during the
ceremony. You may decide to include traditional or contemporary music. Please remember that
songs must not contain religious content and must reflect the dignity of the occasion.
Readings
You can personalise your ceremony by including a reading, by you, a friend or family member.
Readings are a personal way of demonstrating what you feel about each other or expressing what
marriage or partnership means to you. There is a vast choice of suitable passages or poems to
choose from, but please remember that readings can not contain any religious references.
Finishing touches
Fees and Charges Checklist
• Contact Gateshead Register Office to check
availability
• Arrange an appointment at the register office
in the district where you live to give legal notice
• Pay fees and charges
• Bring the relevant documents
• Collect your Marriage Authority document if
you are marrying in a different area
There is a statutory fee for each notice of
marriage or civil partnership (you can find out
more about this in the fees and charges list on
our website:
www.gateshead.gov.uk/registrars). Please bear
in mind that if you change your mind about the
venue, new notices will be required and fees
will need to be paid again.
Please don’t be late – it’s important that you
arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of
your ceremony. This helps us and ensures
that other ceremonies are not held up or
inconvenienced – we want everyone’s
special day to run smoothly. So please:
• arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of
your ceremony
• make allowances for traffic delays and
pre-ceremony photographs
If you are late, your ceremony may have to
be postponed.
When you arrive
The Registration Officer will see you separately
to talk through the ceremony and put you at
your ease and you will be asked questions to
confirm information given at the time you gave
legal notice at your local Register Office. Once
these formalities are over you will be invited to
join your guests and the ceremony can begin.
