Be afraid … be very afraid!
“Each year, 100 000 people catch an infection in hospital. Of these,
5,000 die
- more than are killed on the roads-
It’s one of the worst rates in the world.
So is there a cure?”

Be afraid … be very afraid!
• The number of MRSA cases rose by
3.6% in the year to April 04
• Hospital acquired infections cost
us more than £1 billion each year
• 1 in 10 patients has a hospital infection
at any one time
• 39% of employees in the catering industry do not
wash their hands after visiting the lavatory
MRSA in the USA
“HOPKINSVILLE -- School officials are taking measures to prevent the spread of a highly contagious bacterial infection.
In a letter sent home to parents recently, the symptoms, prevention methods and treatment for MRSA (Methicillin-
Resistant Staphylococcus aureus) were outlined.
MRSA [can be] spread through direct physical contact, but also can be spread through shared objects such as towels, sheets, clothing or sports equipment.”

MRSA in the USA
“AMBRIDGE, Pa. - Ten students at two western Pennsylvania high schools have been diagnosed with staph infections, and eight of them were confirmed to have a relatively new strain that has baffled medical experts because it is resistant to some antibiotics and generally found in younger, otherwise healthy people.
Three students at Ambridge Area High School in Beaver County were diagnosed with staph infections last week, one of which was antibiotics-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. In the last two months, relatively small outbreaks have been reported in several other states - often among student-athletes, who may share towels and gymnasium facilities.
About 20 students at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore were found to have MRSA infections they caught at the school's gym earlier this month.
Officials at the schools in Ambridge and Mt. Lebanon said they are disinfecting locker areas, and now forbid players to share towels and equipment. Players are being told to clean their equipment at home each day.”

BioCote in the Community
• Healthcare – it’s more than hospitals;
nursing homes, GP practices, dentists, specialist clinics
(e.g. plastic surgery), hospices, vetinerary practices etc
• Education
• Food production chain
• Leisure - including tourism
• Retail
• In fact anywhere personal storage or changing
facilities are shared …
… OR EVERYWHERE !
BioCote - Risk Assessment
• Lockers are a high frequency contact point
in many hygiene critical environments
• Painted surfaces such as lockers harbour
bacteria
• Employees, patients or visitors spread
bacterial contamination
BioCote - Risk Management
• In conjunction with good hygiene practices
such as hand washing, greater education
and increased surveillance,
BioCote protected lockers offer an effective
complementary level of protection against
cross-contamination
BioCote - Risk Reduction
• BioCote reduces the risk of cross
contamination by
preventing the multiplication of
bacteria on treated surfaces
• Effective against a broad spectrum of
micro-organisms and bacteria including
MRSA & e-coli

BioCote - How does it work?
• The active ingredient is silver and is
a non-leaching additive
• Silver is recognised by NICE
(National Institute for Clinical Excellence) as
effective against antibiotic resistant

Scientists identify tools to fight MRSA
Scientists have identified three medical products and equipment which they think could help in the fight against the hospital superbug MRSA, the health secretary, John Reid, announced today.
Their stamp of approval means the products, which are already on the market, could be used immediately by hospital trusts, even though the scientists suggested further clinical and value-for-money trials.
The panel of scientists approved silver-coated hydrogel catheters which they said could reduce urinary tract infection; a cleaning system which relies on hydrogen peroxide vapour to decontaminate hospital rooms; and a non-alcohol based gel for hand cleaning.

Foam dressings are used for their absorbency and ability to conform to a wound. The way they handle fluid varies between brands. Simple foam dressings allow fluid to pass straight through while maintaining non-adherent contact with the wound. Other foams absorb fluid within the structure of the dressing and have horizontal wicking which spreads the fluid throughout the dressing, allowing greater absorbency (Thomas, 1990).
Foam products are usually backed with a film that prevents strikethrough of exudates (leaking of exudates onto the outside of a dressing). Some companies also offer foam products with impregnated silver, which has antimicrobial properties.
