Second Sunday of Advent Letter from Fr. Buehler Babies just amaze me. This past Thanksgiving, I got to hold and play with my 8 month old niece, Molly. Her wonder at every new thing, even a simple wooden block, invited me to share her wonder. Earlier this week, Pope Francis wrote a short letter inviting us to wonder in amazement at another baby: the babe in swaddling clothes, Jesus. In this beautiful and powerful letter (you can read it here: https://tinyurl.com/FrancisNativity ), he invited us to reignite our devotion to the Nativity Scene, or Christmas Crèche. “In front of the crib we discover how important it is for our life, so often frenetic, to find moments of silence and prayer — the silence to behold the beauty of the face of the Baby Jesus, the Son of God, born in a lowly stable.” The Holy Father spoke of its origins: firstly, in history, as captured for us by the Sacred Scriptures. But secondly, through St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis had the privilege of visiting the Holy Land at a time when it was very difficult if not impossible to visit. He experienced the power of a ‘touchable’ re-living of the Gospels. So on his way home to Assisi, he found himself in Greccio, Italy, and was moved to ask a few locals “to bring to life the memory of that babe born in Bethlehem, to see as much as possible with my own bodily eyes the discomfort of his infant needs, how he lay in a manger, and how, with an ox and an ass standing by, he was laid upon a bed of hay.” The locals and other friars responded wholeheartedly to bring together a manger with hay, an ox, a donkey… but no statues. You see, the nativity scene was enacted and experienced by all who were present! Pope Francis went on to ask: Why does it move us so deeply? First, the Nativity Scene shows us God’s tender love: how he lowered himself to take up our littleness. Secondly, It helps us to better relive what took place in Bethlehem, enabling us to experience it through our mind’s eye. Thirdly, it invites us to “feel” and “touch” the poverty that God’s Son took upon himself out of love for you and me. His Holiness then invited us to contemplate the deeper meaning of each of the symbols: The darkness of the night sky: in the darkness of night, Christ was born. In the darkness of our own lives, when we are most apt to ask the most meaningful questions, Christ is born there too. Angels and Guiding Star: call us to set out for the cave with the shepherd and magi to worship the Lord. Shepherds: those who were not too busy, and so “became the first to see the most essential thing of all: the gift of salva-tion.” ‘Non-Biblical’ figures: bakers, seamstresses, first responders, teachers, beggars, doctors and nurses… inviting us to con-template that the Gospel is meant to intertwine with all aspects of life. Herod’s palace in the background: don’t be fooled by wealth and fleeting promises of happiness as Herod was, and so missed out on the birth of the Savior! Blessed Virgin Mary: She contemplates and shows her child to every visitor! God knocked on the door of her immacu-late heart, which she opened in her ‘fiat!’. She now invites us to the joy of abandoning ourselves in faith to God’s will. St. Joseph: The guardian and first teacher of Jesus as a boy and a young man. “As a just man, he entrusted himself al-ways to God’s will, and put it into practice.” Infant Jesus: He who brings the scene to life, for He is Life! This baby awakens joy and wonder… not just at the pre-cious gift of life, but that the all powerful, eternal God would humble himself to become so small and needy as a tiny baby. He draws along side of us to lead us to where he is. Three Kings: The seeking, the worshiping, the gift giving – Jesus came for the poor and the wealthy, the simple and the learned. All are called to be his disciple! Ultimately, the Nativity Scene calls us to ‘become as children’ (Mt. 18:3). To set aside the dense theology texts for a while, and be renewed in the simple yet potent foundations of our faith: God truly became one of us, starting as a tiny baby, born in poverty, to an unknown family… that he might become a part of every life, every age, every family. Do you have a nativity scene at home? Perhaps it is time to get one! And parents and grandparents: the task of passing on our faith to our children and grandchildren is a daunting one. The rich symbolism of the Nativity Scene is truly a beautiful, simple, powerful way to invite them into the Gospel! One final quote from Pope Francis: “Beginning in childhood, and at every stage of our lives, [the Nativity Scene] teaches us to contemplate Jesus, to experi-ence God’s love for us, to feel and believe that God is with us and that we are with him, his children, brothers and sis-ters all, thanks to that Child who is the Son of God and the Son of the Virgin Mary. And to realize that in that knowledge we find true happiness. Like Saint Francis, may we open our hearts to this simple grace, so that from our wonderment a humble prayer may arise: a prayer of thanksgiving to God, who wished to share with us his all, and thus never to leave us alone.”

Stewardship “Commitment” Prayer
Lord Jesus, Create in us a new heart. Pour your Spirit upon us
so that we may do the will of the Father. Nourish us with your Eucharist and heal us of sin.
Let our commitment to stewardship be a sign of our love for you. Amen
Stewardship Reflection
“Therefore, every tree that does not bear good fruit
will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” Matthew
3:10
Do you bear good fruit for Christ? Or, do you spend your time, talent and treasure constantly acquiring more toys, clutter and junk. Our time, our talent and our treasure are gifts that God has given us. What we do with them is our gift back to God. What gifts are you planning to give to the Lord during this upcoming Christ-mas season?
