Weld RE-1 School District
Weld RE-1 School District Newsletter A message from Weld RE-1 Superintendent Don Rangel
Dear Weld County School District RE-1 Community,
As promised, I want to update you periodically on the Weld RE-1 Bond Project. The bond
funds approved by the voters in November 2016 are being used to improve the school facilities
in LaSalle, Glicrest and Platteville. It is our belief that this investment will create better and
safer learning environments for students to learn and for teachers to teach.
Some of the work will be harder to see such as improved drainage systems, HVAC systems, and
new roofs. Some of the work will be more obvious such as new lighting, flooring and carpet,
paint, windows, lockers, gym and cafeteria ceilings etc… At this stage of the project, there are lots of facility
assessments going on that will lead to architectural and engineering designs that will ultimately lead to the construction
documents that guide the physical work that needs to be completed. Below, I have outlined some of the key decisions
that have been made by the Board of Education, and key tasks currently happening. First of all it is important to note
that we have hired two firms that have expertise in guiding the key work and decisions that will need to be made
throughout this process:
Diversified Consulting Services (DCS) has been hired to serve as the Owners Representative for Weld RE-1.
TreanorHL has been hired to provide the Architectural and Engineering Services.
As of today, the team from TreanorHL has reviewed existing structure construction drawings from Weld RE-1 as well
as visited and inspected all schools (this is an ongoing process). In addition, we have met with school principals to
discuss the involvement of parents and staff through the Design Advisory Group process. The civil engineer for the
project has had initial meetings with administration of each individual town on utility design and will coordinate future
meeting dates. In addition, I along with the Chief Financial Officer and Supervisor of Weld RE-1 Facilities meet with
the DCS and TreanorHL team every other week for an extended planning meeting on various aspects of the Bond
project.
In addition, RFQ’s were published and proposals accepted for Survey and Geotechnical work. The Board of Education
approved the hiring of two firms to complete this work. In addition, the Board of Education hired a firm to complete
Asbestos and Hazardous material assessment for each school. The report on Hazardous materials should be complete
by mid April. In addition to the aforementioned assessments, we are also fully assessing the roofs of each school, the
HVAC systems, and technology infrastructure of the school district. All of this assessment work is very necessary to
develop a quality plan moving forward.
Potential Summer work is being planned. A major project we hope to complete this summer is demolition and
replacement of the Valley High School Football Field and Track. An RFQ has been published and proposals are due by
March 20, 2017. The field and track are heavily used by several school groups throughout the district and it will be the
goal to complete this work this summer. In addition, we are hoping to replace the roofs of some schools, complete
abatement of any hazardous materials, and complete fire and utility upgrades if possible.
The timeline to complete all projects district wide is August 2019. I will post a more detailed timeline for the work to
be completed in each individual school on the School District website when we have it in a more final form.
Sincerely,
Don V. Rangel
Superintendent

STANDOUT STUDENT: REBECCA VERASTEGUI, SOUTH VALLEY MIDDLE
One of the first things people talk about when Rebecca’s name comes up is that she
is always wearing a bright, sunny smile. That smile carries into everything she does,
especially her interactions with other people. “She is kind to all around. Her smile
makes the room just beam with a pleasant feeling,” said Mrs. Larson, one of her
teachers.
Rebecca is also known around South Valley Middle School for being a leader in the
classroom. As a member of the choir there are younger students to whom she sets
the example. “She’s one of the experienced kids. . .knows what she’s doing and
provides a good example,” said Mr. Goff.
Being a good student is important to Rebecca and it definitely shows. All of her
teachers describe her as not only attentive but as someone who strives for
improvement. She is always ready to ask questions and learn more. This is a trait
that will serve her well in her future, a social studies buff, Rebecca wants to be a
lawyer when she grows up. She is already working toward that goal too! Rebecca
actively engages in studying current events by “Asking thought provoking questions
in order to see and understand multiple points of view,” said Mr. Pinedo.
Rebecca is also a dedicated member of the basketball team. On or off the court she
strives for greatness and is known for doing everything the best of her abilities.
When she isn’t in class, on the basketball court or keeping up with current events
Rebecca enjoys spending time with her family, especially her five year old sister.

FFA NEWS
February brought FFA week to Valley High School. With activities
everyday the group was pretty busy. Tuesday they hosted a school
wide dress up day. Wednesday the Weld RE-1 community was invited
to the agriculture room for a student cooked breakfast. Thursday was
official dress day. Friday, was the most exciting day for the district. It
began in the morning before school with a tractor parade. Then all of
the second graders in the district came out to learn about where their
food comes from. The Ag barnyard was the highlight of the week!

Third Quarter Happenings
PETE MIRICH
Not many second and third grade students know
songs from the 1940’s but the ones from Pete
Mirich Elementary school do! For their musical
they performed “On The Radio” which featured
songs such as “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,”
“Sargent Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band” and
“Footloose.” Later in March everyone in the
school got to come
hang out at the
Chili Bingo Family
Night. Games of
bingo were played,
a cake walk was
featured and later
Students at North Valley Middle School learned that good deeds do get noticed during their January
academic awards ceremony as a student was recognized for helping a community member with an
emergency medical situation. Middle schoolers across the district got to compete in the Northern Plains
Middle Level Association spelling bee. Several students made it past the written round into the oral
competition. South Valley Middle school has begun a morning walking club. Three mornings a week students
walk laps around the inside of the building. Everyone walking tallies their laps, at the end of the week all of
the laps are added together for the total number of miles walked. The goal is “Walk Across America.” As the
amount of miles walked grows the students move states. The students learn facts about each state they “walk
through.” Students got to learn about gravitational forces through the long jump. Yard sticks were placed on
the ground and students saw how far they could jump. The measurements were calculated and then adjusted
for gravitational variances on different planets.

GILCREST Second graders at Gilcrest Elementary School
learned that grapefruit leaves smell vaguely like
fruit loops during FFA week third quarter. Third
graders designed their own science experiment
around water absorbency and presented it to the
Board of Education. All of Gilcrest Elementary
School got to participate in “I Love To Read
Month” by having a read-a-thon. Families,
students and friends came out for Chili Bingo!
The new year has brought a lot of fun for Valley High School students!
Valentines day brought music to everyone’s ears as the Valley Singers
delivered singing valentines! Students, teachers and staff were
serenaded with songs such as “The Way You Look Tonight” and
“Lucky.” The wrestling team brought home victory again this year! At
the state wrestling tournament the Vikings brought home the cham-
pionship title for the fourth year in a row. The knowledge bowl team
brought their brains to the game this season. They competed in several
matches and even hosted one. The music department hosted a chili
supper and bake sale to help raise funds for travel. Their event was very
successful!
Third quarter held a lot of excitement for the
students at Platteville Elementary School. During
“I Love To Read Month” the PTO gave every
student in the school a free book to read. The
third and fourth grade students learned a square
dance for their music program. Firefighters,
district employees and others visited the students
sharing the various reasons why reading is
integral to their careers. Afterward, they read the
