App. 1-10 for nozzles
Alternate (to UG-37) procedure for nozzles
More accurate and typically a more economical design
Can allow nozzles to be closer than UG-37 method
Earlier only for “Large” nozzles
Now for all nozzles on Cylinders & Cones
ASME Div. 1 Code Updates
3
![Page 4: whats-new-in-asme-a-2010](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042814/5531dfce4a7959de2a8b4aee/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Nozzle Design Options
Regular nozzle
– Internal Pressure
UG-37 (Area Replacement) + Weld Strength per UG-41.1
Or
Appendix1-10 + Welds per Div. 2 per 4.5.14
“Large” Nozzle – nozzles > 40in on 60in dia. Cylinder/Cone
– Appendix 1-7 (no internal projection)
Or
– Appendix 1-10
Appendix1-10 does not address External pressure case

Nozzle Design Options in PV Elite
5
Here is how to set it
![Page 6: whats-new-in-asme-a-2010](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042814/5531dfce4a7959de2a8b4aee/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
ASME Div. 1 Code Updates
6
Flanges – bolt spacing factor
To limit leakage between bolts
(in circumferential direction)
Penalty factor which increases flange moments
Still using TEMA bolt spacing for TEMA exchangers
![Page 7: whats-new-in-asme-a-2010](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042814/5531dfce4a7959de2a8b4aee/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
ASME Div. 1 Code Updates
New requirement for the Hydrotest – UG-99(b)
UG-99(b) says generally stress @ hydrotest is increased by 1.3 times
Bolting is normally exempted the increase- Except
Except in the case where 1.3 x Sa/Sb exceed 90% yield.
![Page 8: whats-new-in-asme-a-2010](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042814/5531dfce4a7959de2a8b4aee/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
ASME Div. 1 Code Updates
8
Minimum neck thickness for manway / opening
• New in 2010 Edition
• Increase of the wall thickness already in PV Elite
• But, less severe than a process nozzle.
![Page 9: whats-new-in-asme-a-2010](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042814/5531dfce4a7959de2a8b4aee/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)

ASME Div. 1 Code Updates
There are changes in required nozzle wall thickness – UG-45
Formerly a calculation was required - Now there is a table instead
![Page 10: whats-new-in-asme-a-2010](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042814/5531dfce4a7959de2a8b4aee/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
The Tubesheet – Shell/Channel Joint
HOT FLUID
ASSUME SHELL SIDE IS HOT SIDE
SHELL WANTS TO GROW (THERMAL)
BUT IS RESTRAINED HERE
SO WHAT HAPPENS ?
10
![Page 11: whats-new-in-asme-a-2010](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042814/5531dfce4a7959de2a8b4aee/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Tubesheet to shell junction is a Critical stress point.
This is what happens
11
![Page 12: whats-new-in-asme-a-2010](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042814/5531dfce4a7959de2a8b4aee/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Elastic-Plastic Analysis for Floating Exchangers
Shell
Allow small plastic yielding, allowable is
approximately 3*S
after plastic iteration
But, Tubesheet may
become thicker
12
Very useful when tubesheet is ok but junction is overstressed.
( for Pressure cases )

Material Properties Changes
Section II Part D Material properties
– Material Allowable Database completely re-done
– Yield strength
– Young’s Modulus etc.
13
![Page 14: whats-new-in-asme-a-2010](https://reader034.vdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042814/5531dfce4a7959de2a8b4aee/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
New “Metric” Material Database
Imperial Internal Database
Converted from Imperial to user units 20,000 psi = 137.90 MPa v/s 138 MPa
Difference is insignificant
Acceptable per ASME Div. 1 GG-1
But not per some inspectors
Solution : New “Metric” database
It will be possible to choose between
native “Metric” database
or
Imperial to Metric database.
To select one
