It was a horrible, terrible night when…
Hemi dressed into his wild and scary taniwha suit. He started to become
naughty.
His mum grabbed him by his taringa and dragged him to his room.
Slam! Went the door.
A little vine started to creep and crawl.
Trees, grass and vines burst out of his wardrobe and bushes started growing
from his ceiling.
Hemi was confused and gasped “What is this place?”
He sneaked, he stomped, he screeched until he heard the waves crashing
against the rocks.
He found a huge abandoned waka and he set off through night and
day.
The moon winked at him during the night and…
the sun glared down at him during the day.
Off in the distance he could hear roaring, growling and screeching
coming from land.
When he reached land he saw some mysterious beasts.
Their faces glittered in the dark and their eyes were like the green sea.
Hemi spat at them and said “Stop you fellas’ and he looked at them angrily
and challenged them to the haka.
KA MATE! KA MATE!KA ORA! KA ORA!
KA MATE! KA MATE! KA ORA! KA ORA!
TENEI TE TANGATA PU-HURU-HURU NANA NEI I TIKI MAI, WHAKAWHITI TE
RA! UPANE! KA UPANE! HUPANE! KAUPANE! WHITI TE RA! HI!
They didn’t take the challenge and crowned him king.
They celebrated by bungy jumping, rugby and eating tonnes of pavlova and kiwifruit
and hokey pokey ice-cream.
“Come on, hurry up and pack this stuff up!” shouted Hemi. He sent them to
bed without any kai.
Hemi felt lonely like he was lost and he wanted someone to love.
He sneaked away from his kingdom but…tripped and woke up the taniwhas.
Hemi quickly got up and ran for his life. The taniwhas were charging like
cheetahs behind him.
Into the waka he jumped. Hemi set sail…
One day a taniwha Went swimming in the moana
He whispered sweetly in my taringa "Won't you come along with me
There such a lot to see Underneath the deep blue sea."
I said "Oh, no, no, no!You'd better go, go, go,
Although I know we could be friends. My Mama's waiting for me
Underneath the kowhai tree Taniwha, haere ra!"
…after many weeks and days he finally arrived home.
In his room he found his hot kai waiting for him. On his plate was whitebait fritters, baked beans, pikelets and a
glass of L&P.
Hemi sighed and said “kia ora”
