Unique power grid projectlaunched in Oregon, USA
Aunique insider's view of a working smart grid demonstration projectwith the development of the 8,000-square-foot Salem Smart PowerCenter facility in Salem, Oregon, USA, by Portland General Electric. What’s truly unique about this
is the way a 5MW lithium-ion battery systemis at the centre of everything.Installed with a large-scale energy storage system, the centre is primarily a test-bed to help PGE test
how to store and better integrate variable renewable energy sources like solar and wind into thepower grid, along with several other smart technologies as part of its Salem Smart Power Project. Thetechnologies work together to create a highly reliable ‘micro-grid’designed to serve about 500 businessand residential customers in southeast Salem.
PGE collaborated with Eaton and EnerDel, Inc. on the $23 million Salem Smart Power Project. Theproject received U.S. Department of Energy matching funds as part of the largest regional smart griddemonstration project in the US — officially it’s known as the Pacific Northwest Smart Grid DemonstrationProject (PNW-SGDP).
“We are demonstrating smart grid technologies to help teach others how to build intelligent energyresources for the future, while continuing to deliver long-term value for our own customers," Jim Piro,PGE president and CEO, told WIP. "We are proud of the collaboration, hard work and ingenuity that wentinto this project, and thank our customers who volunteered to participate in this important study."
Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, chairman of the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, outlined the international importance of this smart grid set-up: "Increasing renewables, reliability andstorage moves our country toward a low-carbon, more sustainable energy future. This Smart Power Centerand the Pacific Northwest Smart Grid Demonstration Project shows that when it comes to energy innova-tion, Oregon takes a back seat to no one."
The PGE project will test energy storage, dispatchable standby generation, remotely operated powerline switches, demand response, renewable energy integration and transactive control.
PGE worked with EnerDel to outfit the centre with a 5MW, lithium-ion battery system, while Eatonprovided engineering expertise and two-way inverters to manage and operate the energy storage system. The energy storage system works with state of Oregon standby generators to create a ‘high-reliabilityzone to reduce service interruptions for PGE customers’. The Oregon State Data Center, Oregon MilitaryDepartment and the Anderson Readiness Center are all participating in the research.
Salem-based Kettle Brand, the ‘pioneer of kettle-cooked potato crisps’ and an industry leader insustainability, is connecting its 616-panel rooftopsolar installation to the project to help teststorage and bring solar energy into the grid whenit's needed most.
To test demand-response technologies, PGEbusiness customers are volunteering to cycletheir heating, cooling and other systems on andoff throughout the day or shift their use tooff-peak.
PGE is also testing its own Smart PowerSM soft-ware, which brings power generating resourcesonline at the optimal time.

EU ETS in turmoil after carbon-credits rejectionLast month the European UnionParliament rejected a proposal tobackload - or postpone - theauctioning of additional creditswithin the EU Emissions TradingScheme (EU ETS). The proposalwas aimed to rebalance thesupply of credits and stabilise theprice of carbon. The rejected vote prompted the
price of credits within the EU ETSto plummet. The European Commissioner for
Climate Action, Connie Hedegaardresponded to the vote. She com-ments: “The Commission, ofcourse, regrets that the EuropeanParliament has not approved the
back-loading proposal...Europeneeds a robust carbon market tomeet our climate targets and spurinnovation. The Commissionremains convinced that back-loading would help restoreconfidence in the EU ETS in theshort term.”The WorldGBC’s European
Regional Network also weighed inon the vote, commenting: “Todayis a desperately sad day for theEU; previously a world leader onclimate change policy, and withmany countries around the worlddeveloping their own cap-and-trade schemes, the messagewe have sent out is an over-
whelmingly negative one.”The EU ETS not only supports the
emissions reduction targets ofEuropean countries and corpora-tions, but also the trading of theUN flexible mechanisms under theKyoto Protocol, includingCertified Emissions Reductions forClean Development Mechanismprojects.

Google decides to ‘go fly a kite’ and make powerGoogle has bought a US-based-
company which generates powerusing turbines which are mountedon tethered kites or wings.
Makani Power will become partof Google X - the secretiveresearch and development arm ofthe search giant. The deal comesas Makani carries out the firstfully autonomous flights of robotkites bearing its power-generatingpropellers.
Google has not said how muchit paid to acquire Makani, but ithas already invested $15m(£9.9m) in the company.
Makani reports that the dealwill "provide us with theresources to accelerate our workto make wind energy costcompetitive with fossil fuels".
Rather than use fixed turbinesto generate power, Makani hasrecently been experimenting with‘flying wings’ adorned withseveral smaller turbines which actas propellers as the craft takesoff.
Makani claims that mounting theturbines on a wing is moreefficient as large numbers can bebuilt with fewer materials thantraditional tower-based turbines. In addition, the robot wings canland to avoid damage if windspeeds are too high or during badweather.
The compan has plans tooperate the tethered wings insmall groups of six with each one
anchored at thepoints of a vasthexagon. The wingsoperate between250m (820ft)and600m meters aboveground.
The firm hasjust successfullycompleted tests ona 30 kW prototypeto see if its controlsystem lets itlaunch, hover,
and generate power and landwithout any human intervention.
Fully working models will belarger and, Makani hopes, be ableto generate 600 kW. It hopes thecost of the power generated willinitially be competitive withoff-shore wind farms.
Power is generated by the wingflying in a circular path, withelectricity transmitted to theground via the conducting core ofthe tether.
Google X is the ‘big ideas’ armof the search company - it seeksout unusual investment projectsand is tasked with testing outideas outside the normal remit ofthe larger company.
The lab has already inspiredinvestment in Google's self-driving car initiative currently inthe news and also did the earlyinvestigation work on itsaugmented spectacles projectwhich was launched in 2012.
Leak discovered in Space Station power coolingOn May 10th, 2013, the International Space Station discovered radiator leak in its power system. The leakwas in the system used to cool electronics associated with solar array power channel 2B, one of eight fed bythe station's huge solar panels. Ammonia flowing through a large radiator is used to carry away heat
generated by the array's batteries and electricalsystems. The two U.S. arrays at the far left end of the station'sintegrated power truss - the port six, or P6 arrays -feed power to electrical channels 2B and 4B. The P6 set of arrays, like its three counterparts, routespower from the solar panels directly into the station'selectrical grid during daylight passes, at the same timecharging dual sets of batteries that take over duringorbital darkness. Nasa said the leak is from onepreviously leaking loop which could be bypassed ifneeded, and that eventual repairing the leak mightrequire a portion of the station's cooling system beshut down for about 48 hours.

120kWe CHP system supplied to the Butlins Holiday
Resort in Skegness will serve 1.5m holidaymakers
Cogenco, Dalkia's specialist CHP provider, has supplied a new CHP system to thefamous Butlins holiday resort in Skegness. The 120kWe CHP plant will provide heating
and electricity for the resort, which catersfor 1.5 million holiday makers each year. Cogenco's CHP is a packaged system
designed for smaller commercial sites, andhas been sized to deliver significant savingscompared with electricity supply from thegrid and running separate heating systems –as well as reducing CO2 emissions. In this application, waste energy from the
electricity generation plant is fed throughan exchanger to provide heating forshowers, pools and rooms. Mike Crowther, operations director at
Butlins, told WIP that the new system iscurently allowing the Butlins resort toprovide electricity and heating to theindoor health spa and Splash Waterworldpool complex, while considerably reducingits costs. Crowther explains: "Dalkia's CHP techn-
ology has enabled us to lower our energybills and maintenance costs, whilstcontinuing to reduce carbon emissionssignificantly." He says: "With long-term commitments to
energy efficiency and carbon reduction, werequired an efficient on-site CHP systemthat could provide a heating solution to ourswimming facilities, which are in constantuse throughout the day."
As part of Dalkia’s cogeneration plantmanagement package, the company ispledged to provide clients with:
* Uninterrupted Energy Supply at ReducedCost
* Guaranteed total energy efficiencyreducing the amount of primary energyused by up to 40%.
* Local energy management based on an
ongoing optimum choice of available energysources, including gas, power, hot water, steam and other primary energies.
* Secure heat and power supply to thesite.
Dalkia’s CHP technology is said to create asignificantly reduced environmental impact, with greenhouse gas emissions reduced bymore than 30%, rising to up to 60% whencogeneration replaces fuel oil or coal, avoiding the emission of up to 500 grams ofcarbon dioxide per kWh produced.
Dalkia recently began started constructionof the future biomass boiler which willsupply the Purpan site, the new Pierre-PaulRiquet Hospital and the new emergency -resuscitation - general medicine andpsychiatry buildings at the ToulouseUniversity Hospital - Purpan.
To meet the Purpan site's current energyrequirements and future-proof the facilityfor the significant additional needsgenerated by the opening of new buildingsin 2014, the Toulouse University Hospitalhas undertaken a major energy savingsprogram and the redeployment of itsEnergy Unit.
As a result, it has contracted PurpanEnergies Santé, a Dalkia France subsidiary,to design, build and operate its future bio-mass heat boiler. The boiler plant will havetwo 2.5 MW wood-fired boilers that willprovide 90% of the site's heat requirements.A condensation heat recovery system, avery efficient solution in energy terms, willrecover the energy from the condensationof the plant's flue gas.
This new boiler will consume 9,000 metrictons of wood fuel a year sourced from thelocal forestry industry. With its emphasis onrenewable energy, the future Purpan EnergyUnit is scheduled to enter service inOctober 2013.
It will reduce the future site's energyexpenditure by two thirds.
and avoid the emission of 5,300 metric tonsof CO2 a year, that is, the equivalent emis-sion of 3,000 vehicles.
One of Europe’s biggest dairy plants basedin Poland willreplace a coal-fired facilitywith combined heat and power technologyas Poland continues to reduce itsdependency on fossil fuels.Mlekovita, the first dairy factory based in
Poland, is to see installation of the facilitycarried out by Dresser Rand in conjunctionwith its local partner in Poland,Energotechnika.
Before it considered installing the CHPfacility, the facility used 18,500 tonnes ofbrown coal a year as fuel. Replacing thecoal-fired facility with a CHP systemenabled Mlekovita to obtain the 'YellowCertificates' - an econonomic incentive foreco-management - from the Polishgovernment thanks to the increasedefficiency of the new system. The CHP plant uses four Guascor® SFGLD
natural gas gen-sets which provide 1.6 MWeof power. The gen-sets warm up the con-densates back-flow for the steam boilersfrom the dairy factory and produce processsteam at 4 bar for internal use.The GUASCOR gas engine SFGLD series is
said to stand outs for its toughness andhigh performance under the hardest work-ing conditions.GUASCOR gas engines can run on different
qualities of gases both natural gas and bio-gas.The simultaneous generation of electricity
and heat by the cogeneration plants allowsthe user to take full advantage of the fuelenergy.Guascor prides itself on taking on theimportant challenge of providing electricalenergy to companies and populations wholive in isolated remote regions.

ElectraTherm, a leader in small-scale, waste heatto power generation, has just installed a GreenMachine at a biogas plant in Slapanov, CzechRepublic, in its second collaboration with biogasplant constructor EnviTec. ElectraTherm and its distributor, GB Consulting,
commissioned an ElectraTherm Green Machine in togenerate additional power and increase energyefficiency onsite, and the machine has accruedmore than 2,500 hours with greater than 98%availability, as of May 2013.The Green Machine was added at a biogas power
facility with a GE Jenbacher 700kWe internalcombustion engine running off manure and cornbiogas. The Green Machine gets its heat from awater loop extracted from the Jenbacher’s jacketwater and exhaust gas at 100°C. The machineproduces 25-35kWe, and excess heat is also used tosupply heat to local buildings, assist in the digestion
process and to drywood.ElectraTherm’s
patented OrganicRankine Cycle(ORC) technologybegins with hotwater enteringthe GreenMachine, where itheats a workingfluid into apressurisedvapour. The high
pressure vapor expands through ElectraTherm’spatented twin screw power block, spinning anelectric generator to produce fuel-free, emission-free power. After turning the expander, the vapouris condensed back into liquid through the use of aliquid loop radiator.“GB Consulting has more Green Machines installed
in the Czech Republic than any other ORCtechnology that we know of,” sLok Selveraj, ChiefExecutive Officer of GB Consulting, tells WIP. “Wesee a great vision for our future partnership withElectraTherm, with 2013 being even moresuccessful than 2012.”ElectraTherm’s Green Machine generates power
from waste heat, on applications such as biogas, ICengines, biomass, geothermal/co-produced fluidsand solar thermal. ElectraTherm’s Green Machinefleet has surpassed ten years (87,600 hours) of runtime with 98% availability.

Fortum’s new CHP plant in Klaipeda, FinlandFinland's energy group Fortum hasjust inaugurated a new combinedheat and power plant in Klaipėda,in which it has invested €130m.The power plant, which burns
municipal and industrial wasteand biomass to generate districtheating and electricity, is the firstof its kind in the Baltic countries,Fortum says."Using sorted waste as fuel incombined heat and power produc-tion is a sustainable solution forurban areas. It offers a cost-efficient answer to energy andwaste management needs alike, and helps to significantly reducegreenhouse gas emissions
compared to depositing waste inlandfills," Fortum CFO MarkusRauramo tells WIP.The Klaipėda facility is the first
of the four power plants whichthe Finnish group plans to launchin the Baltic and Nordic countriesthis year, he said.
The plant will have a capacity ofapproximately 50 MW heat andabout 20 MW electricity. Thedistrict heat produced at theplant will replace natural gas-based heat production capacity.Switching to combined heat and
power production will increasethe efficiency of the energyproduction and will decrease the
CO2 emissions in the area byabout 10,000 – 36,000 tonnes ayear. Fortum's new CHP plant isthe first waste-to-energy plant inthe Baltic countries. The production plant will play a
key role in the city of Klaipeda'swaste management and willsignificantly reduce the disposalof waste in the local area.

the heat from the engine is re-covered to produce hot water or steam. In cogeneration with a gas engine, an efficiency level of 90% is achieved compared with 35% for mains electricity.Over the past few years, many
clients have shown their concern over the cost of electricity and an interest in gaining efficiency. To this regard, promoting gas generation as a source of continuous and distributed electrical energy has become for HIMOINSA an additional instrument to satisfy the energy needs of its clients.

and improving our environment. Ask us, we will explain you how your business can benefit from using HIMOINSA Gas Genera-tors.
ON-SITE POWERDistributed energy avoids looses on transport and saves costs in electrical infrastructures. Be your own decision maker and create your own inexpensive electrical energy.
GAS POWERWhy Gas?. Gas is cheaper. And cleaner. In some countries, its price is even less than one third of diesel and much more stable. It is becoming a more and more available energy source all over the world. Engines are more durable as oil keeps its optimum characteristics for a longer period, so operational costs are lower than in diesel, emissions too. That means that your total costs of ownership* (TCO) will be less with a gas genset rather than a diesel one in continuous duty applications.
HIMOINSA SATISFIES THE DEMANDS OF THE ENERGY MARKET WITH ITSGAS AND DIESEL GENSETS
HIMOINSA, is a world-leading company in energy generation, with over 30 years’ experience, and is today established as a great multinational, present in over 130 countries and capable of satisfying the demands of the electrical energy market.
ON COVER
Its concern for covering the client’s needs has lead it to offer a wide range of diesel and gas generators. It is without a doubt a mixed formula that enables it to offer a comprehen-sive energy solution in the market in which it operates.
To its wide range of diesel products is incorporated the gas generation range with power outputs from 8 kW to 3.5 MW, powered by differ-ent gas fuels such as Natural Gas, Biogas and LPG (Liquefied Petrole-um Gas), among others.
The gas generators are intended for on-site electrical supply, which is commonly known as distributed generation. This enables network transmission losses to be eliminat-ed, at the same time as reducing pollution emissions when compared to other generation technologies; they are even eliminated when us-ing renewable fuels such as biogas.
The Cogeneration Sales Manager at HIMOINSA, Manuel Aguilera, states that the multinational has worked on the design of gas equipment ca-pable of offering important savings in electrical energy expenses: “The gas generator mainly targets a con-tinuous power market where high efficiency, low operational costs and low emissions are virtues really ap-preciated. In many cases electricity from the generator is cheaper than mains supply. True distributed en-ergy for those who are determined to reduce their operational costs” he adds.
One of the known applications of gas generators is cogeneration, where as well as electrical energy,

FROST & SULLIVAN REPORT
New analysis from Frost & SullivanAsia-Pacific Data Centre CoolingSolutions Market finds that the
market generated revenues of more thanUS$1.2 billion in 2011 and estimates this toreach US$2.17 billion in 2018.
Digital transactions and online hostingservices are gaining pace, and the need tonetwork globally for better process andlogistics management has heightened, speeding up the establishment of datacentres in Asia-Pacific.
Hence, cooling system suppliers areinvesting in new product development tokeep up with these fast-changingrequirements and thereby stimulate salevolumes.
“Data centres are likely to face anenergy deficit owing to escalatingdigitisation and cloud computing, andgreen data centre cooling solutions thatreduce carbon emissions are becomingpopular,” said Frost & Sullivan Energy andEnvironment Senior Research Analyst AmitKumar Singh.
“Customer evaluation of cooling solutionsbased on total cost of ownership ratherthan purely on initial capital costs further

highlights the importance of efficiency.” The expansion of corporate and
government networks to meet thechallenges of the ever-widening scale ofbusiness and operation, along with theexplosion in social networking, willincrease the use of data centres, andconsequently boost cooling systems marketgrowth.
Data centre operators from across theglobe are relocating their data centres tothe Asia-Pacific, further contributing to the
market’s scope. Regulations on global
warming and carbonemissions are likely tocompel data centre-providers to replaceexisting systems withmore efficient coolingsolutions, adding tomarket revenues in theregion.
However, it’s knownthese upgrades will belimited to a certaindegree due to the highcapital costs. Potentialcustomer’s preference for
traditional standard cooling solutions, andreluctance to commit to the sizeableinvestments necessary for new moreefficient cooling systems, pose anotherchallenge.
Long, drawn-out bureaucratic processeswill delay equipment purchase andimplementation, dampening the demand. The slow construction market in Asia-Pacific has weakened demand fromvertical markets, further affecting coolinginfrastructure expansion.
“Cooling solution providers must partnerwith IT vendors to broaden businessopportunities, build comprehensivesolutions, and widen their reach,”concluded Singh.
“Creating a global product design teamwill enable cooling equipment vendors toconsistently develop sought-after productsthat comply with the industry’s highestefficiency benchmarks.”

For the past seven months Baltic CableAB and European Market CouplingCompany GmbH have enabled a new
functionality in the market couplingmechanism on Baltic Cable.
Since October 2012 this newfunctionality has been able to taketechnical losses - which amount to 2.4% ofthe total electricity transferred on thecable between Sweden and Germany- intoaccount.
The technical work was implemented inorder to fulfill the economic welfarecriterion, the underlying principle formarket coupling, in a more precise way.
Previously, electricity had beenphysically lost during the transport fromSweden to German and vice versa.
Ignoring these losses in the marketcoupling process had meant that flowswere being calculated in a way which couldnot be achieved in reality.
In fact, the loss functionality can be usedwithout any changes in the powerexchanges’ systems. It was tested in 2012and the tests were confirmed by a neutralscientific institute: the economic jugglinginvolved will not harm the current qualityof market coupling results.
The loss functionality can be configuredfor any interconnector if this is desired bythe respective cable owners, reports thecompany.
In the new mechanism, less energy isbeing sold than energy bought. The spotpower exchanges now include EMCC’smarket coupling orders in their calculationlike they do today.
As the loss factor for Baltic Cable is 2.4%,the volume sold (or the import volume)equals 0.976 times the volume bought (orthe export volume).
As a result, the price difference is atleast 2.4% if there is a flow on the cable, and there will be no flow on the cable ifthe price difference is between 0% and2.4%.

ALTERNATORS
This AC power is converted by sitebase rectifiers to provide the DCpower needed for the BTS load and
battery charging.Mecc Alte AC alternators are a proven
solution used in many applicationsglobally. According to the manufacturer, their high-efficiency and minimummaintenance requirements make them anideal selection for telecom power. With anauxiliary winding system and lowmaintenance the alternator is a compactand economical solution.
Air conditioning motors absorb highcurrent from the power supply uponstarting so the selected AC generator mustbe able to to deliver this peak start-updemand, typically they are oversized.
As these AC generating sets arenormally sized based on these transientrequirements of the air conditioningloads, a lower X”d value proportional tothe SMPS loads being applied is preferred.
Load creates a current distortion whichthen induces a resulting voltage distortionfrom the alternator. Again, this isgenerally minimised by machine selectionand oversizing to cover the transient loadrequirements.
The Mecc Alte brushless digitally-

regulated AC alternatorrange is said to beideally suited to thedemands of this tele-com application, witheach alternator fittedas standard with thema_AUX auxiliarywinding system it canprovide superior motorstarting capabilities, allowing up to 300%overload for 20seconds.
With class-leadinglow X”d (sub-transientreactance) thealternarors’ perform-ance with no-linearloads is enhanced. Thus, typically no over-sizing is neededallowing the generating set provider themost cost-effective package.
Alternator performance indicatorsinclude:
* High transient power for economicalternator selection;
* Low reactance (X”d) values to enhancemotor starting and performances withnon-linear loads.
* Volts/Hz characteristic - underspeedprotection voltage reduces proprtionallyto rpm to limit excitation current form aset threshold, to protect against over-excitation should the engine fail to reachfull speed.
* Overload protection (operational after20 seconds to avoid tripping on motorstarting).
* A selection of advanced windingprotection from ‘GREY’, ‘TOTAL’ &‘TOTAL+’ to suit even the harshest ofenvironmental conditions.
* Inlet filters and higher IP protection
levels available on all sizes to suit allapplications.
* +/-1% digital voltage regulation asstandard [Option for +/-0.5%].
* >300% overload from the ma_AUXauxiliary winding for 20 seconds.
Key to the telecom application is theability to accept large impact loadsrelative to the size of the alternator. The ma_AUX system used in over 90,000machines each year is well proven, reports Mecc Alte.
It provides over 300% power for 20seconds which is easily enough for mostaircon motors. The voltage dip will varyaccording to the level of the impact load, but typical TVDs would be 15% with 100%load on, 25% with 200% load on, and 35%with 300% load on.
Traditionally, conventional AC diesel-driven generating sets are installed within the BaseTransceiver Station to provide site load. Within each base transceiver, AC power is used to
energise air conditioning units to cool the electronics and also the batteries, reports WIP.

The Rosenheim cogeneration facilityalready features four previouslyinstalled Jenbacher engines – three
3.35 MW J620 units and one 4.4 MW two-stage turbocharged J624 unit – as well asa waste incineration plant.
GE says its J920 FleXtra offers anoverall efficiency of about 90% whenoperating in cogeneration mode. Over asingle year, this results in over 130 millionkWh in primarily energy savings and thereduction of over 7800 metric tons ofCO2.
The engine's short start up time willalso help give the Rosenheim facilityoperation flexibility to deal with thechallenges of intermittent renewableenergy supplies, reports the company.
"Our flexible J920 technology offers bothhigh efficiency and reliability levels, which makes it the ideal large gas enginedistributed power solution for industrialand grid stabilization applications whilealso minimizing the customer's carbonfootprint," Karl Wetzlmayer, generalmanager of gas engines for powergeneration at GE Power & Water, tellsWIP.
As part of the Energiewende concept, the Germany government has set out itsgoal of increasing CHP power generation
New gas engine forcogeneration in Bavaria
to 25% of the country's total power supplyby 2020.
GE’s J920 FleXtra Jenbacher gas engineis regarded as a front-runner in terms ofelectrical efficiency and is designed fordurability, simple installation, andmaintainability. The engine consists ofthree modules, including a generator, engine, and turbocharger auxiliarymodule, which provide a high-quality,prefabricated, standardised generator setmodule.
Typically, each module is factory-tested, then shipped separately andassembled onsite, offering reducedinstallation time.
In addition, the modules have highlystandardised interfaces which work wellwith the balance of plant (BoP) systems, and ultimately simplify BoP installationsand total plant erection time.
The power unit ensures low downtime –the J920 FleXtra power unit can easily bereplaced without major disassembly ofthe engine.
The J920 FleXtra is equipped with asegmented camshaft, allowing easyexchange through a maintenance windowat the top of the crankcase.
With the modular engine design, decoupling the units is a simple process.Major engine parts stay in place and areeasily accessible.
Based on the extensive experience ofGE’s Type 6 gas engine combustionsystem, the J920 FleXtra Jenbacher unit isequipped with an advanced pre-chambercombustion system with spark ignition andoptimal conditions for longer part life. Inaddition, the individual gasmixingachieved by port injection in combinationwith cylinderspecific sensors allows eachcylinder to be controlled to operate atoptimal performance.
The J920 FleXtra mechanical structure isdesigned to allow high-peak firingpressure. In combination with the latestmiller technology and 2-stage turbo-charging, the J920 FleXtra Jenbacherengine can achieve excellent 48.7%electrical efficiency.
Stadtwerke Rosenheim has installed a 9.5 MW GE Jenbacher J920 FleXtra gas engineenabling a plant located in Bavaria to supply 36.1 MW of electrical power and 43.8 MW of
heat for a town near Munich, southern Germany, reports WIP.

Aconsortium formed of iCONInfrastructure Partners andincluding EEA Holdings Limited and
2OC Limited will build a plant to provideheat and power under long-term contractsfor companies around the Beckton area inEast London. The deal will be worth morethan $300m over 20 years.
iCON II is iCON Infrastructure’s secondfund focused on core infrastructureinvestments in Europe and North Americaand owns 77.5% of the facility.
The new plant will be integrated withNational Grid’s gas pressure reductionstation and is in close proximity toThames Water’s desalination plant andsewage treatment works.
The energy generated from the wastewill also neutralise a £1m-a-monthproblem – the cost of clearing the drainsof 40,000 fat-caused blockages every year.
The fuel supply involves around 30tonnes of waste per day from leftovercooking oil supplies at eateries andmanufacturers, fat traps in kitchens andpinchpoints in the sewers.
This is enough to meet 50% of the fuel
Biofuel at the heart of anew CHP plant for London
needs of the powerplant, with the other50% supplied from wastevegetable oil andtallow/animal fats. Theplant will be up andrunning by early 2015and will produce enoughelectricity to run justunder 40,000 average-sized homes.
2OC's Combined Heatand intelligent Power(CHiP) station will bebuilt around a two-stroke marine dieselengine, the kind whichnormally powers largeocean-going vessels.
This engine will be roughly the size ofa large detached house. Waste heat fromthe Beckton CHiP generator will be usedto heat up gas as part of the pressurereduction process at the adjacent Becktongasworks.
The gas pressure has to be dropped tomake safe for delivery to homes andbusinesses. Lowering the pressure of a gascauses a huge drop in temperature, whichcould freeze and crack pipework.
Using waste heat from the engine willreduce the need from gas to be burned toproduce the heat currently required to dothis job. 20C will also recover some ofthis thermal energy to generate evenmore electricity.
The grease will be fed into the powerstation at Beckton in east London, and isset to produce 130 Gigawatt hours (GWh)a year of renewable electricity - enoughto run 39,000 average-sized homes, according to Thames Water.
The water company has agreed to buy75 GWh of this output to run Beckton
sewage works, which serves 3.5 millionpeople, and the nearby desalinationplant, operated in times of drought orother emergencies.
Rob Smith, Thames Water's technicalcoordinator, explained it was a "win-winsituation". He said recently that the fatwas made up of "everything that goes intothe sewer and lots of things that reallyshouldn't".
The Biodiesel Power Station, Beckton, inGreater London represents the largest100% biodiesel scheme in the UK.
Balfour Beatty worked in partnershipwith Thames Water and Finnings (dieselengines) to complete the project.
Thames Water Utilities Limited can nowgenerate renewable energy at BecktonSTW to offset the energy consumption ofthe Thames Gateway Water TreatmentWorks located on the same site.
The fat and oil currently clogging London’s drains [top left] will soon be powering the world'sbiggest fat-fuelled power station planned for London. Waste cooking oil will drive a new £107m

“Because healthcare facilities and hospi-tals need electricity and heat 24/7/365,they benefit tremendously from theenergy efficiency and reliability that com-bined heat and power (CHP) systems pro-vide,” Glenn Powers, energy efficiencymanager, GEM Energy, tells WIP.
“This system’s compact size and lowsound level make it a nice fit for ourcustomer.”

Other local combinedheat and powersystems GEM Energyhas installed &integrated are locatedat the Toledo Museumof Art, The HuntingtonCenter; SeaGateConvention Centre, andThe University ofToledo in the USA.
GEM Energy providescomprehensive energyservices & technologiesincluding energymanagement programs, distributed powergeneration systems, energy managementcontrols and energyprocurement strategiesfor commercial, institutional, industrialand mission-critical facilities.
Cranes installed the microturbinegenerators which replaced the hospital'straditional boiler system.
The new compact system, which has alow sound level, cost about US$500,000,Joseph Merritt, ProMedica projectengineer, tells WIP.
Using microturbine technology, thehospital will reduce its carbon footprintand - Merritt says - should reduce energy
use by 1 million kilowatt-hours per year orby US$50,000. So, its system costs shouldbe recouped in 10 years, he said. Thesystem will use natural gas to provideheat and electricity.
Over the next month GEM will prep thecampus and its mechanical room for thesystem's 24-hour use, which includes tyingin natural gas, heating and water piping, and electrical feeds. A control system willbe installed to manage the energyservice.
“The Microturbine system was chosenbecause it provides an immediate impactfor ProMedica’s commitment to providingboth energy-efficient and sustainablefacilities,” concludes Glen Powers.
GEM Energy recently won a contract to install and integrate a combined heat and power systemat ProMedica’s Wildwood campus based in Toledo, USA. GEM Energy has provided
equipment in the form of Capstone Microturbines® to transfrom energy usage, reports WIP.

IE2 high-efficiency ATEX motor rangesAlthough safety motors for use in ATEX
gas and dust zones were not included inthe EuP European directive lot 11 whichimposes, from 16 June 2011, the exclusiveuse of motors with IE2 efficiency level inaccordance with IEC 60034-30, Leroy-Somer has taken the decision to make themajority of its ATEX ranges also or

exclusively available in an IE2 version. Innumerous installations, the ATEX zonesare adjacent to safe zones where theinstallation of high-efficiency motors hasnow become a statutory obligation.
According to the company, an increasingnumber of users are insisting that theirequipment suppliers integrate IE2 motorson all the machines they supply.
ATEX Gas Zone 1 - Leroy-Somer providesa new range of flameproof motors withIE2 efficiency level as standard.
Leroy-Somer has taken the decision todevelop a new range of FLSD flameproofmotors with IE2 efficiency level asstandard (from 11 kW) in order toanticipate what this market requires.
Leroy-Somer has selected low-lossmagnetic laminations as part of itsoptimised component design.
The end shields are ribbed to ensuremaximum heat dissipation. The profile ofthe housing cooling fins has beenoptimised, reducing the power absorbedby the cooling fans.
The considerable reduction intemperature rise increases the life of thewindings (more than 10,000 hrs onaverage) and reinforces the capacity toaccept brief overloads. The new coverand fan design also reduce the noiselevel: - 5 dBA for example on a 30 kWmotor running at 3000 rpm.
Leroy-Somer offers a variety ofcomplementary equipment (PTC or Pt100sensors, heaters, cable gland, incrementalencoder and/or forced ventilation unit,Corrobloc finish for harsh atmospheres, etc). In terms of maintenance, thegreasing intervals have been significantlyextended, resulting in a reduction inmaintenance costs: a 30 kW motorrunning at 1500 rpm, operated at anambient temperature of 25°C, cantherefore run for more than 20,000 hrswithout intervention.
A ‘Guaranteed Availability’ charter ofdelivery times allied with a gearboxassembly centre allows the customer toprocure several hundred part numbers onguaranteed short delivery (between 1 and5 days ex. works depending on theoptional equipment chosen).
As WIP reveals in this company profile, Leroy-Somer is one of the world’s leading manufacturersin electromechanical & electronic drive systems and a world leader in industrial alternators. Asubsidiary of the Emerson Group, Leroy-Somer is a French company employing 9,300 people.

As part of its LSA 40 line of high-performance alternators [above] , Leroy-Somer's Electric Power Generation divisionproduced the LSA 42.3, a new product inits Partner low voltage range, designed tomeet the needs of both manufacturersand users of generators.
LSA 42.3 is a 4-pole three-phasealternator which offers the followingrange of power ratings to complementthose of the LSA 40:
- 50 Hz - 1500 rpm: 25 to 60 kVA- 60 Hz – 1800 rpm: 25 to 60 kWAs with LSA 40, LSA 42.3 is also available
in a dedicated single-phase version. LSA42.3 comes with three field excitationversions, to suit customer requirements:Shunt (high starting capacity); AREP (highstarting capacity + short-circuit capacity);and PMG (equivalent system to AREP)
Available in a single-bearing or two-bearing version, LSA 42.3 is a particularlyversatile alternator which is mechanicallysuitable for most engines on the market. It is also interchangeable with alternatorsfrom the previous Partner range, reportsLeroy-Somer.
As with LSA 40, compactness is one ofthe strong points of LSA 42.3: despitebeing the same size as the previousmodel, LSA 42.3 gives you increasedpower along with high efficiency levels. This power and efficiency combined meanthat the user saves energy.
What's more, the low reactance ofthese new products give them a highcapacity for starting electric motors andthe ability to withstand disturbance fromdistorting loads.
Pure Energy generation alternators arealso very easy to install. As such, for LSA42.3, a cap has been added to theterminal box originally designed for LSA40, to ease the access to the AVR. Leroy-Somer EPG has developed a robust, high-quality range that meets internationalstandards and is perfectly suited to themost complex and restrictive new genera-tion of Pure Energy alternators.
Leroy-Somers' has also invested moneyand research into creating high efficiencymotors, driven by the fact that, on June2011, European Commission regulation640/2009 came into effect.
This made it mandatory for class IE2high-efficiency motors to be placed on themarket.
Based on standard IEC 60034-30 anddefining efficiency classes, this regulationspecifies the efficiency levels to beattained for machines sold in the currentEuropean market and outlines the fulltimetable for their implementation.
The regulation excludes certain motorson the basis of their specific operatingconditions or specialist categories, such asbrake motors, onboard motors, safety
motors according to directive ATEX94/9/EC, etc.
Leroy-Somer has proved equal to thetask, releasing complete IE2 efficiencyclass motor ranges onto the market wellbefore the deadline for application of theJune 2011 directive. Its new LS2 range hasbeen available since the end of 2010.
On the LS2 the winding life has beendoubled thanks to technical choicesdesigned to reduce the temperature rise, the terminal box has been made larger, the DE and NDE shield mounting has beenstrengthened. The packaging has alsobeen redesigned to ensure the motor isfully protected during transport.
In parallel with this launch of a classIE2 efficiency range, Leroy-Somer soughtto anticipate the next phase of the
Directive, applicable in 2015, and isalready offering motor ranges with classIE3 efficiency. A number of manufacturershave chosen to switch directly to class IE3motors already. This is another example of
how, even before the 2015 date, Leroy-Somer has found a way to anticipate itscustomers' specific requirements.
The latest challenge involves aninnovative design for IE3 motors. Leroy-Somer has been successfully developingits brand new range of IE3 motors forseveral years. This new design offers fea-tures such as optimised cooling(ventilation, housing fin design, etc) andredesigned laminations and winding. WIP

COMBINED CYCLE
Norbert Wenn, Director of SalesSupport and Product LineManagement at Siemens, recently
told the media: "The renewed GermanCHP law and incentive scheme has made abusiness case of the Lausward plantcurrently being built in Dusseldorf. Thiswould have never happened had it beenplanned as a pure condensing plant."
The Siemens chief says that selling heatin addition to electricity has made newcombined-cycle power plants moreeconomically feasible in Germany.
Siemens aims for a net efficiency of over61% at the plant, when it becomes opera-tional in 2016.
Siemens Energy has received an orderfor turnkey erection of the Lauswardcombined cycle power plant with districtheat extraction in Düsseldorf.
It will employ Siemens H-classcombined cycle gas and steam turbinetechnology, which set a world record ayear ago and has since also proven itselfin commercial operation.
The order was placed by StadtwerkeDüsseldorf AG (SWD). With an electricalunit output of around 595 megawatts anda net efficiency of over 61%, the LauswardCCPP will set a new world record for bothparameters.
New combined cycleplant for Germany
In addition, thegenerated thermalenergy will be used forthe district heatingsystem in the city ofDüsseldorf.
Never before has itbeen possible to extract300 MWth of districtheat from a singlepower plant unit incombined cycleoperation, claimsSiemens. Thus, theoverall efficiency of thenatural gas fuel will bearound 85%, says thecompany.
The Lausward CCPPplant will be one of themost efficient andenvironmentallysustainable plants in theworld. The value of thecontracts, including along-term maintenancecontract for thesupplied components, isbetween €400m and€500 million.
The SGT5-8000H gasturbine developed bySiemens forms the heartof the highly efficientcombined cycle power plant with districtheat extraction in Düsseldorf, Germany.
In addition, the generated thermalenergy will be used for the districtheating system in the city of Düsseldorf.
According to Siemens, ‘never before hasit been possible to extract 300 MWth ofdistrict heat from a single power plantunit in combined cycle operation. Thus, the overall efficiency of the natural gas
fuel will be around 85%.’ Once it is in fully operation in 2016 the
new plant in Duesseldorf is likely to be beone of the most efficient andenvironmentally sustainable plants in theworld.

SONIC SOOT BLOWERS
Youngheung Power Plant is a coal-fired power station located onYoungheung Island, 40 kilometres
from the South Korean capital, Seoul. To prevent buildup and blockages within
its SCRs, Youngheung Power Station hadpreviously relied on retractable steamsoot blowers.
However, due to the deterioratingcondition, reliability and performance ofthe steam soot blowers the operatingefficiency of this equipment soondeclined, reports Primasonics.
After analysing the high costs ofreplacing and maintaining the steam sootblowers, plant personnel chose to look fora more cost-effective and reliable solutionto the problems they were experiencing.
The search by the Youngheung PowerPlant team led them to the Primasonicswebsite and to its Korean agents, ArtronixSystem Co. Ltd.
Artronix System Co. Ltd arranged a sitevisit with Youngheung Power Stationpersonnel to discuss in depth the benefitsand capabilities of Sonic Soot Blowers and
16 Sonic Soot Blowersfor South Korea
to obtain the relevant applicationinformation and drawings.
Ultimately, this approach allowedPrimasonics to establish which would bethe most suitable model of Sonic SootBlower and the best potential installationlocations.
Following the submission ofrecommendations and quotation fromPrimasonics, Artronix won the order for 16Q3 (120 Hz) model Sonic Soot Blowers.
Installation and commissioning ofequipment took place in June 2010 andwas supervised by Primasonics TechnicalDirector, Alex Bergus, who attended siteto ensure the smooth transition betweencleaning methods.
According to Primasonics, theinstallation of the 16 Sonic Soot Blowersat Youngheung Power Station saw anincrease in the scale removed and adecrease in the differential pressure incomparison to the three months prior toinstallation.
Plant personnel were so impressed withthe results and low operating andmaintenance costs that the following yearthey installed another eight Q3 modelSonic Soot Blowers on their Number 3 SCRand are now planning the installation of afurther eight units towards the end of2013.
Primasonics International Limited was involved in providing a technical solution for theYoungheung Power Plant in South Korea. Here, scale buildup in the SCR had caused blockages
in the gas flow but this was solved by installing Q3 (120 Hz) model Sonic Soot Blowers.

GEN-SETS
The Milas-Bodrum Airport project wasdelivered on time and within budgetby FGW Jenerator, an official FG
Wilson dealer in Turkey, reports thecompany.
Milas-Bodrum is one of the busiestairports of the Aegean Region, servingMilas, a residential area with prominentcultural heritage, and the popular holidaydestination of Bodrum.
The terminal accommodates more thanfive million passengers from 40 differentlocations annually, meaning FG Wilson ishelping to support the journeys of almost14,000 people every day.
Milas-Bodrum Airport’s new internationalterminal, which is 425m long with anindoor area of over 95,000 sq m, has beenprovided with a critical standby powersystem by FGW Jenerator.
The five high voltage generator setsprovide backup support for the entire newterminal, including nine passengerboarding bridges, restaurants, retailstores, check-in desks and passengerbaggage facilities. They also serve all theinformation desks, banks and a postoffice, as well as almost 30,000 sq m ofbus and car parking space.
FGW Jenerator’s power solutions teamcompleted the installation and commis-

sioning phase in May2012, overcoming aseries of significantengineering challengesin the process.
Any loss of power atthe airport can causemajor issues, so it isessential that allcritical loads arere-supplied as quicklyas possible.
In order to achievethis, FGW Jeneratorinstalled five FG Wilsonhigh voltage P1825generator sets with theability to deliver powerto the airportdistribution network at6.3 kV.
Due to the critical nature of theapplication, the management and controlof the entire standby power system wasimplemented using a redundant PLC(programmable logic controller) inconjunction with a user-friendly touch-screen SCADA HMI system.
The primary duty of the PLC system is toensure the airport is transferred tostandby power as quickly as possible onmains failure and on mains return, theload demand of the airport is smoothlyand seamlessly transferred to the normalmains supplies.
The generator sets and mainssynchronising capability were ultimatelyimplemented using Woodward easYgen3500 controllers, ensuring that the fivegenerator sets were synchronised andavailable to take load within 25 secondsof any mains power failure.
FGW Jenerator packaged both the PLCsystem and the five easYgen controllers in
an integrated floor standing control panelsuite.
To underline the critical nature of thisproject, each generator set was suppliedwith two methods of engine starting, airand battery, a capability which deliveredincreased redundancy and ensured thegenerator sets could always start and beavailable to supply the critical airportloads.
To meet the strict noise conditions onsite, the cooling system for each gen-setwas implemented using a combination ofa set-mounted heat exchanger and lownoise multi-electrical fan remote radiator.Another key element in enabling the noiseconditions to be met was the installationin the plantroom of critical exhaustsilencers on each engine.
The sky’s the limit for FG Wilson, a leading global manufacturer of diesel and gas generatorsets, following the successful completion of the supply and installation of a high voltage power
solution for the new international terminal of Milas-Bodrum Airport in Turkey, reports WIP.

COGENERATION
Romania’s latest CHP plant, locatedin Covasna county, will carry outthe basic processing of 800,000
cubic metres of wood per year, out ofwhich 70% will be further processed intoglued panels.
Around 80% of the plant's output will beexported - part of it after downstreamprocessing in other plants owned byHolzindustrie Schweighofer in Romania.
Biomass projects like these have botheconomical and environmental goals(lowering the costs of energy andreduction of the quantity of CO2emissions).
It serves as a good example for othermajor companies active in the field ofwood processing or in the field of energyproduction.
The Sebes industrial biomass cogenera-tion plant in Romania has a total capacityof 43.5 MW (32.6 MWt + 10.9 MWe). Ituses biomass fuels consisting of: bark, chips, branches and waste from wood pro-cessing (mainly fir and spruce).
The energy (heat) is used for theinternal industrial process (drying of tim-ber sawdust), the supplementary heatproduction is normally delivered toresidential end-consumers.
Combined heat & powerplant for Covasna, Romania
The electricity isused by localconsumers and anysupplementary powerproduction is injectedinto the National PowerGrid.
At the HolzindustrieSchweighofer Sebesplant in Romania , thetotal invetment cost ofthe biomass CHPfacility (CHPP I+CHPPII) was around €30m.
The financing wasensured mainly by theprivate sector (85%)and Environment Fund(15%).
The company wasalso behind Romania’sbiggest biomass-cogeneration plantlocated at a sawmill inRadauti, Romania. Thisbegan operations onMay 7th, 2009.
This cogeneration plant is fuelled bybiomass-like bark, as well as sawmill andharvesting residues like chips or branches.
Its €20m investmentcost were partlysubsidised by AFM(Administration of theEnvironment Fund).
The total capacityof this cogenerationplant is 22 MW (17MW thermal, 5 MWelectric).
The heat isprimarily used for thekiln drying chambersat the mill site,
whereas the heat potential would be suf-ficient so supply 7.000 households.
Here, the electricity produced is direct-ly fed into the public grid and enables thesupply of 25,000 households with greenelectricity.
Gerald Schweighofer commented at theofficial opening of the Radauti facility[picture left]: “This cogeneration plant isnot only a vital enhancement for the pro-duction of energy from biomass inRomania. It also creates new jobs in thewhole production chain.”
Austria's Holzindustrie Schweighofer is building a combined heat and power plant to generatepower for a new wood processing facility in Romania. Located in the Covasna county - a region
with abundant wood resources - the plant will be commissioned in 2014, reports WIP.

POWERPLANT
Developer Almacantar has resubmit-ted plans to convert London’siconic Centrepoint - the 34-storey
office tower- into luxury flats. The building will be upgraded to cut
energy consumption with new highperformance glazing, a central combinedheat and power system and sedum roof.
The planning committee involved in theproject is believed to be - amongst otheroptions - looking at a GE JenbacherJMS416GS-NL gas engine and acogeneration facility engineered, installedand maintained by Clarke Energy, similarto the one installed at The Shard.
A combined heat and power (CHP)plant in the Centrepoint building is likelyto be designed to provide around1.131MW of electricity and 1.199MW ofhot water at high efficiency (85.3% total,41.4% electrical) to the surrounding area.
The addition of a CHP system will helpto reduce carbon emissions and contributeto the low-carbon footprint of the build-ing. In parallel this would providesignificant cost savings versus theseparate purchase of electricity and gasfrom the national grids.
It’s normal for the generators to belocated in the basement of the buildingand they are likely to be housed inacoustic enclosures in order to negate thesound emissions from the engines.
Gas engines like these are alsocharacterised by very low levels of NOx
A new CHP system to beinstalled in Centrepoint
emissions(<250mg/Nm3). Thesereduced emissionslevels are importantwhen it comes toachieving strict airquality requirements inthe London metropolis.
At The Shard it’s allworking well. Theefficiency of up to47.8% of GE Jenbacherengines results in out-standing fuel economyand the highest levelsof environmentalperformance, says GE.
The engines are alsosaid to be highlyreliable and durable in all types of appli-cations, particularly when used for natu-ral gas & biological gas applications. GEJenbacher generators are renowned forbeing able to constantly generate therated output even with variable gasconditions, says the manufacturer.
The patented LEANOX lean burncombustion control system fitted on allGE Jenbacher engines guarantees thecorrect air/fuel ratio under all operatingconditions in order to minimise exhaustgas emissions whilst maintaining stableoperation.
In combination with the LEANOX systemthe GE Jenbacher gas mixer balances out
fluctuations in calorific value, whichoccurs mainly in biological gasapplications. GE Jenbacher engines canoperate on gases with extremely lowcalorific value, low methane number andhence degree of knock, but also gaseswith a very high calorific value.
One of the most important propertiesregarding use of gas in an engine is theknock-resistance rated according to the‘methane number’.
High knock-resistance pure methane hasa number of 100. In contrast to this, butane has a number of 10 and hydrogen0 which is at the bottom of the scale andtherefore has a low resistance toknocking.
The high efficiency of the GE Jenbacherengines becomes particularly beneficialwhen used in a CHP or tri-generationapplication, such as district heating.
One of London’s most visible structures will have a new CHP system installed. The iconicCentrepoint building on New Oxford Street is set for a £350m upgrade, with an advanced
cogeneration concept forming a significant part of the building’s plan, reports WIP.
