Wisdom Tooth Surgery

Don’t:

Your surgeon will discussthe procedure and tell

you what to expect.

Wear loose, comfortableclothing with shortsleeves or sleeves

that can be rolled up.

Arrange for someoneto accompany you on

the day of surgery.

Check with your surgeonif you can eat or drinkanything in the hoursbefore your surgery.

Do:

Don’t use a straw for at least 24 hours.The pressure created by the suctionmay dislodge blood clots.

Don’t rinse your mouth vigorouslyuntil clotting is complete. Yoursurgeon may recommend gentlesalt water rinses to aid healing.

Don’t smoke. It may disturb blood clotsand healing.

Do follow your surgeon’s post-surgicalinstructions.

Do use an icepack during the first24 hours to help reduce swelling.

Do apply moist heat if your jaw is soreand you are unable to open your mouthas wide as usual after the first 48-72 hours.

Do eat soft foods and drink fluidsduring the first two days.

Do take it easy, knowing you can resumenormal activities within a relatively shortperiod of time.

Do be sure to avoid disturbing bloodclots when brushing your teeth.

✓ If there is excessive bleeding or anyother concerning symptoms after youreturn home, contact your oral andmaxillofacial surgeon immediately forinstructions.

When to contact your surgeon

Follow these instructions properly, and promptlydiscard any leftover medications.
