Draft 1b 1
Introduction
The chapel
An advertisement in the Bath Chronicle in 1780 for the sale of an estate of 95 acres refers to “Witherditch, in the parish of Dunkerton”. However, when the lease of the estate was being offered for sale in 1791 it had become ‘Withy-ditch’ and by 1840 ‘Withyditch’.
The chapel was founded in 1817 as a Sunday school with a foundation stone for the chapel building being laid on 22 Jun 1829. It was associated with the Baptist church at Somerset Street, Bath (which later
relocated to Manvers Street). The chapel was rebuilt in 1839/1840 (a stone in the southern wall has 1839), the adjacent burial ground was extended in 1864 and a vestry added in 1874. Preachers were sent by the Somerset Street and Ebenezer Baptist chapels in Bath. Records at Manvers Street Baptist Church in the early 20th century referred to it as ‘an affiliated chapel’. In 1939 the chapel was once more rebuilt. Due to the diminishing number of members of the congregation, the chapel was closed in 2001 with a closing service being held on 15 Dec 2001. However together with the old Withyditch Schoolroom, attached to the Chapel holding, the two buildings were re-named Withyditch Chapel Centre. Subsequently Services were then held on the first Sunday afternoon of each month in the Chapel and still are. The chapel was Grade II listed in 2006 which required some of the UPVC windows to be restored to the original wooden ones. The listing describes the
building as ‘a fairly rare survival of a largely unaltered Baptist chapel’. Burials have continued. A 200-year celebration was held in May 2017.
A 8-page history appeared in 1996 and in 2017, as part of the 200-year celebrations, a 40-page history was produced. This is available from Manvers Street Baptist Church.
Burial Registers
The whereabouts of any burial register are unknown.

Layout
The original map has four rows with each plot numbered from 1 to 70. A line between the second and third rows indicates the ‘old boundary wall’. Some of the plots have surnames. By measuring the location of the graves, it is apparent that the grid arrangement has not been adhered to. In addition, the garden of remembrance section overlays three of the rows and presumably any burials that may have occurred in those plots. For the westernmost row there are memorials at the southern end which have no corresponding numbers. Comparing the surnames on the original map with those actually found, a partial match can be made. To circumvent the mismatch, the new map assigns a row (A-D) and a number to each plot. There remain some surnames on the map which do not correspond to surviving memorials but, in the absence of a burial register, it cannot be established who the names refer to.
