The Woolworths upport Ofce is locatedin the new Norwest Business ark, NorthWestern ydney. The development, completedby Woodhead, includes masterplanning of theGreeneld site, three commercial buildings,3-4 storeys in height totalling 36,000m2 ofofce space set out in a horizontal campus, allconnected via a 2,500m2 central marketplace.
The brief set by the client was to culturallyunite the disparate support operations for thecompany, therefore providing one building
for all people, yet still allowing for highlevels of amenity, accessibility, comfort, andbusiness efciency in a human scale responsewhilst connecting all staff, centralisingtraining facilities and creating a unitedworkplace culture. The cultural statement ofthis consolidation process is evident in thebuilt result where the ofce oorplates andmarketplace encourage staff to communicateand interact, formally and informally.
The masterplan evolved around the idea of
public space and streets, with the centralmarketplace being the rst element to takeform.
The hybrid-ventilated marketplace combinedoff-the-shelf components in an innovativefashion to achieve a cost effective andsustainable solution. The resulting greenhouseratings achieved Australian industry best-practice.
Externally the faade and form have beenarranged to blend with the planted landscape-scale of Australian Eucalypts, of which severalhundred have been planted.
tormwater is harvested from all ofce roofsand collected in one storage dam at the lowerend of the site. This water is reticulated toparticular landscaped zones for irrigation, withany overow being diverted to the riparianzone on the eastern boundary.

It is designed tointeract positively with the environment, reducerather than increase carbon emissions and takeadvantage of free energy sources to providecomfortable and sustainable living and workingspaces.
Eco_cape seeks to produce a sustainable,site-specic tower that can be used as a
benchmark for future projects. It will have to bevirtually self sufcient, include power generationfrom wind turbine and photovoltaic solar cells, combined with low energy heating/cooling/ventilation systems to produce maximumgain for users and minimum impact on theenvironment.

Designed to accommodate future change;the planning is robust and exible, usingurban planning principles that allow staffto move through the ofce spaces easily
and comfortably. Notions of streets, lanes, interconnections and town squares drive thelanguage and forms of the overall design, encouraging communication and interaction.
Open workspaces are broken by communalparks creating an opportunity to meetinformally in a green-scaped casualenvironment with urban timber seating.
The concept of leaves and their changingcolours, reecting Canberras four distinct

The open style format of the workplace beginsat reception and ows directly into the workarea, removing the divide between the twoareas and allowing clients to see Clemengers
work environment. The new space wasdesigned to reect Clemengers desire for awork space where the aspects of, and pathsto, the creative process were on show ratherthan locked away.
Creative zones are built throughout the spaceand one zone features a 4m long design benchwith a roll of paper one end. aper can bestretched out allowing for impromptu individualor group creative sessions can take place. Thework can then be cut off and hung on the wall

hkew Alpha is an innovative ofce buildingdesigned with the central core accommodatingall services, entry lobby, meeting rooms andcafe and connected to two large open oorplates allowing maximum exibility. The designprocess gave consideration to the structuralgrid creating a clean internal perimeter.
Both oorplates are oriented to face 10

East and west facing facades havereduced fenestration protected by a dramaticperforated metal sunscreen. The cafe andmeeting rooms open to a central landscapedcourtyard, enhanced by a water feature andartworks.
erth Airport occupies the 1,330m top oor ofhkew Alpha. The key focus from the onset of
this project was to achieve maximum efciencyof space with the client investigating manypossibilities of open plan design.
The conceptual design was established aroundcolours associated with blue sky, yellow sunand the grey of the tarmac. This colour paletteis reected in the rened materials and nishesof the public areas, while bolder colours wereused in the staff break-out areas.

The heart of the Water Corporation facility

The purpose of the space was to integrategeographically disparate sections of thewater procurement and delivery process.undamental to this was the successfulintegration of teams, enabling them to maintain
their individual function whilst promoting betterintegration with their colleagues. The layoutand spatial organisation needed to providea solution to this specic objective resultingin a circular oor plan which provides a verypractical solution from a functional perspective.
Transparency and visibility is also reinforcedthrough the design, intended to promote acollaborative space. election of materialand detail selection was driven by task andfunction. loor, wall and ceiling treatments

When the spirit-based company ernod Ricard

Woodheadsinterior design of ernod Ricard acicsnew corporate ofce at North Ryde deliveredan inviting and welcoming result whilst alsoreecting the union of these industry opposites.
With a tenancy located over three contiguousoors, the incorporation of a focalcommunication stair was one of the rst

The clients brief was for the design to reectthe organisations values and promote aproactive, dynamic, successful and convivialbusiness culture. A design concept wasdeveloped that would display warmth akin to
stylish upmarket bars whilst reinforcing theircorporate identity. The use of solid timber, timber veneer, and recycled timber throughoutthe space assisted in achieving these results.

The objectives of the building design are torepresent, through the built form, respectfor the objectives and preoccupations of
the aboriginal stakeholders and to stimulateinterest in a reappraisal of our collectivepast, place in the landscape and relationshipbetween aboriginal and non aboriginal people.
The building is dened by an assembledcollection of freestanding overlappingweathered steel wall panels which emergedirectly from the red brown earth and arearranged in plan to provide an abstractrepresentation of the Kurrumanthu acceptableto the aboriginal stakeholders.
Entry into the building is through glass doorsset between two of the steel wall panels. Onceinside, large frameless glass windows draw thevisitor back into an unalienated landscape atevery turn.
The design result is an ambiguous form thatis absorbed by the landscape and open tointerpretation on a number of levels.
The building is wellintegrated into the

ocated 250km north of erth in the NambungNational ark, the innacles are made ofthousands of protruding limestone formations
spread over a vast dunal landscape, a dynamicand ever changing landscape. The designprinciple for the centre is embedded in themutable narrative of that landscape.
The material language for the scheme tsinto its environment, becoming just anotherpart of the background to the desert and arespecically of the place with the podium wallsconstructed in limestone and timbers usedare direct references to the nearby grove ofvanishing tuarts, disappearing under a shifting
sand dune and the planting interventionsinvolve species endemic to the region.
The vertical timber elements, which are agurative reference to the heath shrub in thearea, were deliberately set on re enablingthe architecture to become a registration ofthe role of re in the landscape, as well as anacceptance of a different kind of future; onewhich willingly accepts loss and change andhighlights humanitys vulnerable position inglobal balance.
The innacles Interpretive Centre marks a shiftin architectural response to landscape, as anunderstanding place.

The hark Bay Interpretive Centre wasdesigned for the local authority to introducevisitors from all over the world to the history,
culture and world heritage values of hark Bay.Designed by Woodhead in collaboration withexhibition designers, reeman Ryan Design, the interpretive centre is a collection of simpleconcrete boxes wrapped in a veneer of polishedconcrete , titanium zinc, copper and glass seton a podium some 800mm above street level.
The concrete boxes speak to expediency withthe front most box tilted and twisted to registerthe force and direction of the prevailing wind. The thick polished concrete wall at the front of
the building speaks to the enduring monumentalimpulse of architecture while the titanium zinccladding copper fascia and pewter building signregister and celebrate the inevitability of change.
The enduring architecture acknowledges andcelebrates the elemental forces of wind waveand salt and speaks to continuity in the contextof a largely transient population and culture ofexpediency. A building which is at once an alienpresence in the townscape and yet so deeplyembedded it provides the necessary impetus forthe redenition of the town.
With the completion of the interpretive centreand exhibition gallery, the small shingcommunity of Denham has redened itselfas the tourist centre for the hark Bay WorldHeritage Area, with a building design whichexplores the physical, historical and socialcontext to develop a new identity for the town.

Knowledge has become the cornerstone ofsuccess in todays competitive environment. The brief for the new ingapore National
ibrary was to advance the development andwell-being of ingapore and its people inthe knowledge economy through convenientaccess to information.
The design philosophy is centred around theidea of connections. Connection of the userto the library and knowledge. Connectionof the library to the community as a whole.Connection of the various elements ofthe building to each other and ultimately, connection of the National ibrary and
ingapore to the world.Encompassing all these ideas is nexus, which describes the design philosophy for theproject. This is encapsulated in the seven-storey book wall running through the core ofthe building. The book wall is constructed fromaluminium and glass, and acts as a divisionbetween front of house and back of house.
Other elements of the interior design includemulti-coloured ED lighting and a rare bookslibrary, designed to meet the requirements
of keeping the area dark and cool with lowhumidity.
The library design delivers a place whereingaporeans from all generations and allwalks of life nd support in the pursuit of theirpersonal and professional aspirations.

The east wing of the heritage listed museumbuilding was renovated to create extra galleryspace for the Aboriginal Cultures exhibition. The building work included new lifts, buildingservices, and the addition of an earthquakeresisting structure. A high level of technicalresolution was required to meet Building Code
of Australia Disability Discrimination Accessrequirements and services needs.
A new glazed entrance structure was designedto house the museum shop, caf andorientation centre, whilst maintaining views ofthe heritage facades.
Careful detailing and use of materials hascreated a vibrant and luminous public spacewithin a restricted site. Murray Bridgesandstone blocks matching the east wing weresalvaged from a 1960s addition for reuse in the

The Barossa Valley Estate, a relatively newwinery, required interior design for it new cellardoor complex. The client desired a designreective of its status as a modern companywhile remaining sympathetic to its location inthe heart of the Barossa Valley.
This commission focused upon theadministration building and the cellar door. These two buildings are located on eitherside of a central plaza, creating a village styleatmosphere.
The same palette of nishes and colours wasapplied in both buildings to link them together. The colours were selected to reect the
purples and greens of the vines outside.Natural products are utilised in conjunctionwith more modern nishes, such as glass, stainless steel and polished concrete, to createa contemporary design for the facility. Caftables are made of recycled jarrah from centuryold whiskey barrels. The main structuralfeature in both buildings is a wall built of stonesourced from a nearby property.
The juxtaposition of material types allowsBarossa Valley Estate to create a workingenvironment that is in harmony with itssurroundings and also reinforces its brandidentity sophistication and premium quality.

The acoustic design solution was acombination of several unique conceptsdeveloped in collaboration with BassettAcoustics from Australia and rofessor Caoiao Zheng from Beijing. The variable acousticcharacteristics required are achieved using aseries of rotating cylinders located behind opentimber screens on the walls. Electronicallyoperated, the cylinders have a part-reective
and part-absorptive circumference, allowingtuning of the side wall absorption or reection.
Absorption-lined boxes above an open gridceiling also open and close electronicallyto vary the acoustic characteristics. Acombination of oating and xed wall reectorsachieves the perfect acoustic environment forany event, ranging from unaided speech to afull symphony orchestra.

The linders Medical Centre aediatric Wardwas redeveloped as the inpatient componentof The Variety Childrens Centre at lindersMedical Centre. This $2.75 million design saw
Woodhead architects, interior designers andgraphic designers working collaborativelywith ward staff to develop an excitinginterior concept entitled - @ the beach - asa complementary interior design to that ofthe adjacent outback themed aediatricOutpatient Clinics.
Extensive consultations with staff, parents andchildren ensured that the ward is a place ofhealing and comfort, and that all age groupscan connect with it at some level. The ward
also needed to be highly functional, provideadequate light as well as serve the needs ofhospital staff and parents in what are oftenhighly stressful situations.
The @ the beach theme posed a numberof interesting challenges to designers asthe ward had to be engaging, attractive andfunctional to both patients and their parents.Well thought out graphics were the key tomaking the ward children and family friendly;appealing and reassuring to younger children,
yet sophisticated enough to complement asuitable environment for older children. Theunder-sea images were also selected to assistchildren younger than reading age to recognisetheir room in the ward.
The unique underwater photographic graphicsapplied to the glazed patient room doors hadto allow low level vision for toddlers and higherlevel view through to approaching staff, yet stillafford a reasonable degree of privacy to olderchildren.

of the major hospital facilities of the NorthWestern Adelaide Health ervice (NWAH).Built in the 1950s, TEH required urgent
redevelopment to meet the revised servicedelivery framework denition and to ensurerecurrent operating efciencies could be made.
Woodheads masterplan study helpedto identify the preferred option for thedevelopment. A new build option, with theretention of some existing facilities, allowedthe construction of a three storey hospitalcontaining all of the functional patient carerequirements in a tight, efcient and totallymodern facility.
Effective zoning of outpatients, diagnosticand treatment, inpatient and hotel services isachieved creating optimum levels of efciency, long term exibility, minimum operational costand maximum patient focus.
The design philosphy that formed the drivingforce of this project was more than justfunctional efciency. Woodhead envisioneda hospital on a human scale, one that wouldfacilitate interactions between natural and builtcomponents. Consequently, each of the wardson the ground oor were designed to enjoythe open vistas of the hospital gardens withoutdisturbing patient privacy.
The many and varied gardens play anintegral part in the healing process, withprivate gardens being specically designedto engender positive emotional responses inpatients, their visitors and hospital staff.
