Acknowledgement The manifest capacity of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) around the world for
driving economic growth and development at regional, national and global levels cannot be
overemphasized. As India gears up to retrace the high growth path, the MSME sector assumes a
pivotal role in driving the growth engine. The sector has sustained an annual growth rate of over
10% for the past few years. With its agility and dynamism, the sector has shown admirable
innovativeness and adaptability to survive economic shocks, even of the gravest nature. The
significance of MSMEs is attributable to their calibre for employment generation, low capital and
technology requirement, promotion of industrial development in rural areas, use of traditional or
inherited skill, use of local resources, mobilization of resources and exportability of products.
According to the estimates of the Ministry of MSME, Government of India, the sector generates
around 100 million jobs through over 46 million units situated throughout the geographical
expanse of the country. With 38% contribution to the nation‟s GDP and 40% and 45% share of the
overall exports and manufacturing output, respectively, it is easy to comprehend the salience of the
role they play in social and economic restructuring of India.
This report on the seminar titled Beauty and Wellness Industry by Jawed Habib, being organized
by ni-msme and IIIM Ltd, comes as a handy source of information to all stakeholders. The report
is a collection of experiences and the project implementation process. The report gives good
attention to the present state of the barbers and their requirements for the upskilling, project
execution process, mobilization process, and future scope.
Making a report always calls for coordination and cooperation on various fronts from different
individuals. A report of this nature requires support in terms of expertise, skills and funds.
Therefore, the author‟s gratitude to many quarters is natural. As such our sincere thanks goes to ni-
msme which has come forward and extended the support in all the possible way.

Introduction The wellness industry in India is poised to touch Rs. 1,00,000 crore (Rs 1 trillion) by 2015, with a
compounded annual growth rate of 15-17%, from about Rs 70,000 crore in 2012 , with a likely
shortage of ~600,000 skilled personnel by 2016.
The major challenges faced by the Indian Wellness domain on the skill development front are in
terms of the inadequate availability of training infrastructure, standardized training curriculum
(especially at the entry level), the absence of quality trainers in sufficient numbers, easier financial
access to outcome-linked skills training initiatives, as also a general misplaced notion about the
benefits of vocational training. Matters have not been helped by the fact that the Wellness domain
in India is still largely unorganized and fragmented, with a very limited number of companies in
the organized space having a pan-India presence. The talent deficit poses extreme threat to the
growth and expansion of the whole beauty and wellness industry.
The sector needs to come together on one platform at the national level so that a cohesive thread
between those who need a livelihood, those who will prepare them for it and those who will
employ them are in sync. There are enough success stories in the country to share and enough
space to expand.
Issues and Challenges There are a number of systemic challenges faced by the wellness industry which, if left
unaddressed, can stymie the future growth potential of the industry. Prevailing challenges include
the following. While players are developing strategies to control costs and arrive at optimal cost
structures, managing input costs continue to be a challenge due to the limited capability of the
players to pass on these costs to the customers.
The wellness industry continues to face a talent crunch. This paucity of skilled talent has resulted
in high manpower costs and attrition levels. This may result in a „war for talent‟, unless active
measures are taken to create credible and accessible training infrastructure.
On the whole, industry consensus emphasizes on the importance of improving the overall quality
standards within the sector, and project the image of India as a high- quality wellness destination.
Accreditation and quality certifications are pre-requisites in order to achieve this goal. However,
there are gaps that need to be bridged to minimizes execution challenges and ensure conformity to
quality standards across the industry.

Mobilization The most important task for any seminar is finding the targeted audience and mobilization of the
participants. As this seminar was focused on the upliftment and upgradation of the skills catering
to Beauty industry viz. Salons and beauty parlors, from the start we focused on the community
mobilization through following three channels:
Through Newspaper Ads and Radio advertisements
Through Shop-shop survey
Through Nayee Associations
Newspaper and Radio Advertisemnts
The ad was published on 7/02/2017 in all the leading newspapers in the Hyderabad namely
“Deccan Chronicles, The Hindu, The Times of India and in teleugu papers like Namastey
Telangana and Sakshi”
The Radio ad was aired on Radio one from 8th Feb 8 times a day in both Hindi and Telugu.
The impact of these channels was very positive and there were in total more than 50 registration
phone calls from the interested participants. Due to the seats limitation and also to focus more on
financially backward section we screened all the enquiries and out of that shortlisted 15
participants based on the proper survey and feedback from them gauging the needs and
requirements.
Nayee Associations Beauty parlors and salons is highly unorganised sector driven mainly by the local and street salons
and parlors.
To understand the Barber community‟s organization structure - after initial desk research, a
meeting was held with 4 locally active members of the nayee Brahmin Sangam at A-Block ni-
msme on 25/01/2017. The initial modalities were formalized during the meeting.
A meeting was held at A-Block ni-msme on 31/01/2017 to discuss the programme details and
assign tasks to different stake holders.
Telangana Nayee Brahmin Sangam – Represented by Devara Konda Nagaraju (State General
Secretary) & Kottala Yadagiri(Greater Hyderabad Secretary) – The Sangam having more than
1500 member and 350 salons in Hyderabad and Secunderabad area offered help in mobilization
and survey helping to study the issues and challenges they face in the business.
The associations are segregated on the basis of geographical areas and localities. We also met all
the other heads of the associations based namely Mr Jagdish, Mr M Satya, Mr Surywardhan and
others who represented their areas and they also contributed in the mobilization.
Through shop-shop mobilization in the local market, we also found many Hair Academy and few
NGOs which basically helps the poor students who have zeal to work or to become an
entrepreneur in this field but due to lack of proper market skills, technical skills and funds were
compelled to compromise on their dreams. We reached to some of the students and young and
enthusiastic people and apprised about the scope of the seminar and the numerous opportunities
they have before themselves from government schemes like MUDRA, Start up India etc.
The response was very encouraging and through these mode of mobilization, the practical
problems and real issues was also very much evident. Our team spent few hours at different small
salons and interacted with them which helped us in mobilizing the actual targeted audience which
require government support.
Execution and implementation
The seminar was well organized in the main auditorium at ni-msme campus having seating
capacity of 300 people. The seminar was inaugurated with the lighting ceremony by dignitaries
viz. Mr K K Jalan (Secretary, MSME GOI), Mr Jawed Habib, Mr M Chandrashekhar
Reddy(DG-nimsme), Mr Kushal Maitra and Mr Sharad Jha.
In the inaugural address Mr Jalan also briefed all the participants about the support and work
government is providing for this particular community.
Mr Habib also shared his insights about the tremendous opportunities in this industry apart from
technical skills.
Mr M Chandrashekhar Reddy shared his experiences and vast sectoral knowledge alongside giving
brief information about the various national and international programs which the ni-msme is
offering.

Future scope The world that we live in the days of today, it has seen a constant change in the styles related to the
make ups as well as the hairdos and other aspects of styling that are applicable mostly for women.
Even for men there are fashion trends that have been encountered. The world is moving more and
more towards the fashion and glamour. The main reason for all the glamour and style has its
source and origination in the movie industry. Owing to the changes that have been witnessed, there
has been a lot of demand for the services in beauty as well as the selling of the beauty products
business. The beauty of a person is enhanced with the help of the various cosmetics products that
are used for styling these days by certain individuals. Hence starting a business venture in the
beauty services as well as the products can be a quite lucrative one.
The number of salons have also gone up. Its growth rate is 35 percent. Cosmetic treatments are
also growing at the rate of 5 per cent. The hair and beauty industry is seeing a per capita annual
spend of $1.2 which is expected to grow to $ 6.2 by 2015. The spa and body treatment segment is
estimated to grow approximately $772 million over the next five to eight years.
Growth in the beauty and wellness sector is spread across the country around top 50 cities. Growth
locations can be categorized based on their potential for growth and profitability. These cities and
towns have been analyzed on the following potential indices:
Earning Potential Index: Reflects the concentration of purchasing power in a town and
indicates the quality of the market
Consumption Potential Index: Reflects the inclination to consumption of premium
products, indicating the volume potential of the market
In beauty and salon segment, workforce requirements is expected to grow from 34 lakhs in
2013 to 121 lakhs in 2022
Based on market interactions, beauty sector is expected to grow at a CAGR of 20 percent
with 23 percent in organized sector and 15 percent in unorganized sector
With shift in focus towards quality of service, the industry has been looking to hire skilled
labour to sustain growth
Training Infrastructure
In addition to increasing the number of private training providers, the government has gradually
increased its training capacity through its schemes like
Modular Employable Skills (MES) Schemes
Offered under the Skill Development Initiative Scheme(SDIS)
The scheme has an objective to improve skill development for early school leavers
and existing workers, IT/ITC graduates, etc, especially in the unorganized sector, in
close consultation with the industry, micro enterprises in the unorganized sector,
state governments, experts and academia
Further, the skill levels of personal ready employed can also be tested and certified
under this scheme, i.e., certification of prior/experiential learning
It has provided a path way for multiple entry and exits, as well as transforming skill
development from long-term skill acquisition periods (1–2 years) to short term
(about three months)
STAR Schemes
The Beauty and wellness sector skill council is the national body federation for the
promotion and growth of the beauty and wellness industry
To promote skill development in the sector, the Beauty and wellness Sector Skill Council
of India participate in the national certification and reward scheme ― the STAR (Standard
Training Assessment and Reward) Scheme ― and aims to reach out to a million youngsters
The programme rewards employees undergoing training with an average reward of
INR10,000 per candidate as incentive under the National Skill Certification and Monetary
Reward Scheme (NSCMRS) contingent upon the candidate clearing the assessment with
minimum 90 percent attendance
The Government of India (GoI) plans to reimburse the training cost of the Retail Sales
Associates to trainees under this scheme
The programme is aimed at training workforce employed in the manufacturing and retail
sectors across 200 cities in 23 states.
Some of the Success Story SUCCESS STORY OF MUNNI
Ms. Munni had very humble beginnings in her journey with Jawed Habib. Coming from a conservative Muslim family she had not taken any formal education. It was very tough to even take a job without any education. She had always dreamt of joining and working for a corporate. But that was not possible due to her lack of education. So she moved towards acquiring some vocational skill. With lot of courage and with a paltry savings of Rs.7000/- she started her first beauty parlour. This was 20 years ago. Somehow she managed to run it. During this phase she heard about Jawed Habib the renowned hair expert and decided to enroll herself in one of his academies. She wanted to learn and upgrade her skills in hair styling. It was very difficult to meet Mr.Habib and could not secure an appointment to meet him. But luck gave way and she finally met her idol who had revolutionized the entire hair industry. This is where her journey took a great shape towards success. Jawed mentored her at every step and shared his secrets to run a successful salon and academy. After a marathon effort and dedication Ms.Munni today is the proud owner of two Jawed Habib salons and one academy. Her entrepreneurial journey has set an example for people that if you are determined in life no one can stop you.
SUCCESS STORY OF RAJU JAMPALA
Mr.Raju Jampala came from a poor family. He took up a job of a watchman and thus started his career. He had 3 siblings and his family had a hand to mouth existence. Not being much qualified he came in search of a job to Hyderabad. He joined as a helper in one of the Jawed Habib salons. He used to clean, sweep and mop the salon and was provided accommodation in a small room. Struggling with his income which barely took care of his basic needs he wanted to earn more to live a decent life. During his job at the salon he learnt how to manage the salon and run it. But this alone won‟t do. Hence he wanted to learn hair styling which he took a passion for. But he
was badly disappointed because he could not afford the fees. So after many months he somehow managed to save a little money and finally enrolled in the prestigious Jawed Habib academy. Then it was no looking back. He took up his first franchisee of a Jawed Habib salon in the year 2009 and ran it successfully and made good profits. Here his work experience in the salon helped him a lot. Slowly profits of one salon became the capital for another salon. Today, all the 3 brothers including Mr.Raju own two Jawed Habib salons and one academy and to add more to it they now own a 3-storey bunglow as their residence. Truly this is one of the best success story of a successful franchisee of Jawed Habib. No wonder why this brand is growing exponentially.
