Hi everyone,
This is a big month for me, I am so excited because the magazine now has it’s own smartphone app. This is a big step into the 21st Century for the magazine. Read all about it inside this edition, I hope all you fellow smartphone users fi nd it useful.
I would like to apologise for the error in last month’s crossword puzzle, unfortunately the developer supplied a new grid but omitted to change the clues from the previous month’s edition. I suppose these things are sent to try us, but on the bright side, it did give me the opportunity to chat to a number of readers and receive some very positive comments regarding the magazines. Thank you to everyone that contacted me, if it had gone un-noticed I would have been quite concerned about the value of the crossword puzzle entry.
I also received a criticism last month for quoting page numbers in my intro when the pages were, supposedly, not numbered. The page numbers have for some time been positioned on the sides of the pages, so as not to encroach an any other information. I realise it’s not the standard position and is therefore easy to overlook. I will consider alternative options, but if anyone would like to submit ideas for improvement to the magazine, whether it be content or layout, please do, I’m all ears!

At long last The Village
Directory has entered the world of the Smartphone. This month our brand new mobile app, fi nally goes live for iPhone and Android smartphones. Last year I announced that this app was on its way but unfortunately due to production issues the release had to be postponed. I suppose it serves me right for trying to announce the live date in the magazine before it had actually happend, but now I am proud to announce that is fi nally available for FREE download from iTunes for the iPhone and Google Play Store for Android phones.
Our app brings together all seven of the magazine’s advertisers plus local information, events and special off ers from our advertisers.
It will enable you to search your local area and, if you can’t fi nd what you need, look further afi eld. Your favourite businesses can also be added to your own personal Favourites list simply by clicking

Hopefully this facility will also enable me to publish late events which have missed the print deadline for the magazine. It’s such a shame when an event is sent in just after I’ve gone to print and there’s nothing I can do. But I can now!

15th June Brabourne & Smeeth Village Fete and Craft Fair The fete will be held on June 15 from 2-5pm on Smeeth Playing Field and all proceeds will go towards the refurbishment of the village hall kitchen. Ashford Sings and Jack Dedman will provide the music and the puppets will be back. Other attractions include our local Belly Dancer, model train rides, face painting, bouncy castle, beer tent, BBQ, maypole dancing, local produce, grand draw, craft and traditional stalls, competitions and games. The Brabourne & Smeeth Gardeners’ Society has organised a coach trip to Sissinghurst on 8th June to which both members and non-members are welcome. OPEN STUDIO DISPLAYING SHELL IMAGES
Kent based photographer, Liz Garnett, will be opening her studio in June as part of South East Open Studios. She will be displaying her new series of shell photographs. These have been created through experimenting with fi lm photography to create unusual results. “I have always been drawn to the seaside” said Liz, “but it has taken me three years to come up with a series of shell photographs that please me. This is just the beginning of my shell photography and my aim is to create a body of work for an exhibition.” These are not the fi rst images relating to the seaside by Liz. She has previously created several series of images on beach abstracts.

Container gardening can be a very rewarding way to garden; indeed, if you’re short of space, have a large paved area, have diffi cult soil, or perhaps mobility problems, it may be the only way to garden. And instant eff ects are easier to achieve in containers, allowing you to change your planting schemes regularly as the seasons come and go.
There’s no need to restrict yourself to annuals and bedding when choosing what to grow in a container, although some plants adapt better than others to being grown in smaller spaces - large trees and shrubs – unless made into Bonsai specimens will not thrive in a small pot for long. Dwarf trees and shrubs, on the other hand, are ideally suited to life in a more restricted environment and if they’re fussy about site and soil, may do far better in a pot.
WateringYou may fi nd yourself watering plants in containers up to 3 times a day, depending on the size of pot and the weather, so think carefully about how much time you have to devote to watering. There are automatic watering devices available that can be attached to a timer and pots that sit within a reservoir of water. Use a mulch on top of the compost to help conserve water (and

cut down weed growth). Make sure that the containers don’t get waterlogged, especially in the winter. Raising the pots onto feet (or bricks) will keep them free draining.
FeedingDuring the growing season plants in containers will need feeding, especially in the spring and summer, when they are being watered copiously and many of the nutrients are being washed out through the bottom of the pot. Feed fl owering plants with a high potash fertiliser, such as tomato feed or comfrey/nettle tea and feed the rest with a balanced fertiliser containing equal parts of potassium, phosphorous and nitrogen. Many ready bagged composts contain nutrients, but these will only last around 6 weeks or so (less if you’re soaking your plants each day with water). Slow release fertiliser sticks and granules are also available, an excellent idea for those of us prone to neglecting our pot plants.

sliced• • 1 tbsp sunfl ower oil• • 200g mature Cheddar cheese,
grated• • Beaten egg, to glaze• Tomato salad, to serve (see

Tip: Serve simply with a fresh tomato salad made by thickly slicing ripe vine tomatoes and layering with fi nely chopped spring onions and a few fresh basil leaves. Drizzle with a little olive oil and season with freshly ground black pepper.
To make the pastry, sift the fl our into a large bowl and stir in the mustard powder and salt. Add the diced butter and rub into the fl our between your fi ngertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.Stir in enough of the iced water with a round bladed knife to mix to a crumbly dough. Knead very lightly until just smooth then fl atten into a disc and wrap in cling fi lm. Chill for 20-25 minutes.Meanwhile, prepare the fi lling. Dry-fry the bacon pieces in a large non-stick frying pan for 4-5 minutes until just golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the oil and sliced onions to the pan and fry gently, stirring occasionally, for about 15 minutes until the onions are very tender and pale golden. Leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 190°C, 375°F, Gas Mark 5. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up.Roll out just over half the pastry on a lightly fl oured surface and use to line a 20x30cm loose-based fl uted fl an tin. Layer the bacon, onions and grated cheese in the pastry case and season between the layers with freshly ground black pepper.Roll out the rest of the pastry and use to cover the fi lling. Seal the edges of the pastry with water then pinch them tightly together with fi ngertips. Trim off any excess pastry.Brush the pastry with the beaten egg and pierce 3-4 holes in the top of the pie to allow the steam to escape. Bake on the hot baking sheet for 25-30 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold with tomato salad, if liked.

Plan Ahead with a Lasting Power of Attorney
As part of our regular series on legal matters, Gill Snow of Tenterden law firm Pengelly and Rylands looks at Lasting Powers of Attorney.
If you’ve ever worried about what would happen if you were unable, through mental or physical incapacity, to handle your own aff airs a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) could be the answer and as the process of making and registering an LPA is now easier and quicker than ever it makes sense to do it now.
The LPA replaced the old Enduring Power of Attorney in 2007 and allows you to appoint someone you trust to help you manage your fi nances or welfare. If you were ever to be unable to physically deal with the bank or building society your attorney would be able to do so on your behalf as well as claim benefi ts for you and even sell your property and if you were ever to lose mental capacity they could make decisions for you.
There are two types of LPA available, one which deals with property and fi nance and one which deals with personal welfare. If you appoint an attorney under a welfare LPA they will be able to make decisions on your behalf about where you live, how you live and even medical treatment, if you were unable to make those decisions yourself.
Making an LPA is fairly straightforward, and involves completing an 11 page form. You need to decide who you will appoint as attorney, whether you will have one or more attorneys and whether you wish to restrict the decisions which your attorney can make. Under the terms of The Mental Capacity Act 2005 your attorney must consult with you, whilst you have capacity and if ever you were to lose mental capacity must act in your best interests. You will also have to choose a certifi cate provider. This is an independent person you have known personally for at least two years or a professional, who must talk to you about the LPA and ensure you are aware of what you are doing. You must also choose someone to be notifi ed when the LPA is to be registered.
Lasting Powers of Attorney can only be used once they are registered with the Offi ce of the Public Guardian. This takes approximately 9 weeks and costs at present, £130 to register each LPA. I would
recommend that anyone making an LPA has it registered, so that if it is ever needed it can be used without delay.
If an individual loses capacity without a registered LPA in place application must be made to the Court of Protection for a deputy to be appointed to look after their property and fi nancial aff airs. This can be a lengthy and costly process.

I would recommend making an LPA whilst you are fi t and healthy as it will give you the peace of mind of knowing that someone you trust will be able to make decisions on your behalf if the need ever arose. Village Near You!If you’re out and about in the village, chances are that you’ll run into a group of people, all striding purposefully, each with a set of walking sticks. To some, they might look skiers in denial about the end of the snow season, but they’re actually out doing something called Nordic Walking.

Try this simple exercise to get an idea of the eff ect of Nordic Walking on the upper body:
• Sitting at your desk, raise both arms out in front of you, extending them as if off ering a friendly handshake.
• Make a loose fi st of each hand and place both, thumbs up on your desk.
• Sitting upright, alternately press one fi st, then the other fi rmly into the desk. Do this repeatedly for 15 – 20 repetitions.
• As you press, notice how a wave of contractions passes through your abdominal muscles, with your upper back, arm, shoulder and chest muscles contracting each time you push.
How does that feel? Remember, if you’re out Nordic Walking, you’ll perform 1,800 – 2,200 contractions of all these muscles per mile!

For many older people Patricia’s success will be the spur to launch their own professional stage careers. Others may be encouraged to join an amateur theatre group.
Peter Bressington helps to run the Lindley Players, an amateur theatre society with 350 members based in Whitstable, Kent. He says that the group is always looking to recruit members of all ages, but he is aware that many people are put off by open auditions:
“If people are nervous about performing they can become involved in other ways, such as selling ice creams or painting scenery.”
In order to understand the level of commitment required, Pru Page, Club Secretary of Bocking Theatre Club in Essex, recommends that new members have their fi rst experience of being on stage as part of the chorus of a pantomime or summer show:
“New members should be prepared to learn lines and take part in regular rehearsals but some are shocked by the amount of time they have to dedicate to the production.”
Pru says that learning a theatre role can be stressful for older people, whose memories may not be as eff ective as they once were, but she believes that the more her members become used to it, the easier it becomes. She also recommends the social aspects of joining a theatre group:
“I’ve met some of the best friends I’ve ever had through the club. Once you’ve shared a dressing room with someone – not to mention a few production disasters – you can’t help but become close.”
If amateur theatre doesn’t appeal, or if you already belong to an amateur group and want to go professional, then what’s the best advice?
A course at an accredited drama school (list available from www.dramauk.co.uk) is probably the best option if you want to go professional.
Many drama schools will take mature students for courses that last between one and three years. During that time you will work intensively on voice production, movement and acting. You’ll need an open mind and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone.
If student life is not for you, you can try approaching actors’ agents directly, but before you begin your search you will need a set of high-quality portrait shots. Be prepared for rejection unless you have a unique ‘look’ that lends itself to character roles. Even then you may fi nd yourself auditioning for TV ads rather than strutting the stage at the National Theatre.
Those who are lucky enough to be taken on by a reputable agent can expect to pay commission of around 10%-12% on each job. Actors usually have to pay their own travel expenses to attend auditions and purchase a subscription to online casting directory The Spotlight.
However, the performers’ union Equity claims that at least two-thirds of actors are out of work at any time. With so much unemployment in the performing arts, the dream of taking up a professional stage career can often turn to dust, so it’s reassuring to know there’s always a local amateur company ready to give you the chance to tread the boards.

Kit or bespoke?Kits tend to be cheap and DIY-friendly, as most of the parts (usually a PVCu frame and polycarbonate roofi ng) are pre-cut and pre-drilled ready for installation. Bespoke designs will cost more, but you’ll have something tailored to your individual requirements. Size, siting and aspectFor a useable room allow at least 8-10 metres of fl oor area and consider how the space will complement your property and garden. How will your conservatory adjoin the house? Is there a large enough exterior wall, and will you have to avoid obstructions such as trees or outbuildings? Try to place it facing east or west, as north-facing conservatories tend to be cold, while south-facing ones can overheat.Walls and framesTraditionally, conservatories are built onto a 600mm high ‘dwarf’ wall made of brick or stone, to match or complement your house. More recently, fully-glazed structures have become fashionable, off ering a contemporary look and even more light. The most popular choice for the wall framework is PVCu, a material that is light, strong, requires little maintenance and can be system-built quickly and easily. Bespoke conservatories are generally made in hardwood, which can be carved into slender, intricate designs and suits older
properties, though it is more expensive and requires regular maintenance. GlazingDouble or triple glazing is essential and the best glazing combines a low-emissivity coating that refl ects heat back inside, and argon-gas fi lled units for maximum insulation. In a bespoke conservatory, you can specify tinted, etched, obscured, anti-sun, fi re-resistant, self-cleaning or other specialist glass at a price. For roofs, choose from glass or polycarbonate panels. The latter are light and strong, cheap, and quick and easy to fi t, but tend to obscure light, particularly at thicknesses that achieve the same thermal performance as double glazing. Near trees, they may also suff er from algae growth.HeatingHeating is essential and, to comply with building regulations, it must be independent from your main system. You could place radiators against the dwarf walls or install under-fl oor heating, either warm-water pipe or electric cable, or you may consider electric trench heaters, hidden under grilles around the edges of the fl oor. Where there’s room for a chimney or fl ue you can install an open fi re on the wall that was the outside of the original house.VentilationIn the height of summer you’ll need a cool waft of air. Roof vents may be opened manually
(with long-armed winding gear) or electrically, or may even be thermostatically controlled to open and close at the necessary time. Trickle vents in the roof or side windows are useful, allowing warm air to fl ow out as necessary. You may also wish to add a central ceiling fan.ShadingBlinds ensure privacy, provide shade from direct sunlight and reduce the build-up of heat. If heat is a problem, try solar-refl ective roller blinds. Otherwise, the options include pleated fabric, pinoleum Roman blinds and slatted Venetian blinds. Take your time choosing a look that’s right for you; consider how easy they are to clean and whether you want to open and close them with pull-cords, rods or via remote control. Do I need permission?Many small, domestic conservatories don’t need planning permission, but there are conditions. Check www.planningportal.gov.uk and consult your local planning authority.

Most of us shy away from considering our later years and what they might bring. There may be the joy of watching our family grow and develop with grandchildren, great nephews and nieces, but understandably we do not like the idea of becoming incapacitated.However, we should start thinking about what can be termed as the “longest holiday” of our lives sooner rather than later, as it is now clear that the government will not be funding the ongoing costs of any care that might be required.The reason for the government’s stance becomes clear when examining some of the facts.According to statistics from the Offi ce for National Statistics, in 1992, 14.2% of the London populace were aged 65 or more. In areas where a large number of residents are retirees, such as within the county of East Dorset, this fi gure was running at a rate of over 24%. The average percentage of people within this grouping for the whole of the UK, in 1992, was 15.8%. By the year 2033, estimates show that this fi gure will have increased to 22.9%.
As the state is not going to assist in any meaningful form regarding ongoing care needs, we need to consider the cost of buying care as this is also rising. For example, maintaining professional quality care in one’s own home is now running at around £13.68 per hour. This means that just two hours of care each day mounts up to around £200 each week.
Furthermore, full time fees in a care home now average at just over £27,000 a year rising to over £38,000 for nursing home fees. These fees are just for a basic level of care. To have any form of “luxury” is an additional cost.Here are some tips that will enable you to start planning for the future.1. Check your pensions, ensuring that you have
current information for all of them.2. If you have not done so already, you should
complete a BR19 form and send it off for a
State Pension assessment. The reason for this, particularly for women, is that it will be assumed that your NI contributions would have continued if you had not stopped work in order to care for your children. However, the benefi ts agencies will not know of this and your past situation unless you inform them. Taking this action will enhance your state pension benefi ts.
3. Realistically consider what your ISAs and other savings might be worth. Monitor your investments regularly with a professional adviser.
4. Think about when your mortgage will be repaid, along with any other commitments. Put income that you have released, when loans are repaid, towards ISAs and pensions for your future.
5. Start thinking of your house as a commodity that might have to be used to fund care needs in the future.
6. Consider a special form of trust to ring fence the equity of your house. This can protect your home from local authority means testing when you qualify for care.
7. Review your Wills and the position regarding inheritance tax.
8. Review whether your property is owned as Tenants In Common or under Joint Tenancy as this is important in this arena of planning (Scottish law varies in this regard).
9. Seek independent fi nancial advice from an appropriately qualifi ed professional, and appoint an adviser on a fee basis to advise you.
We all hope that we will remain independent and fi t and healthy, but this will not be the reality for some of us.The facts before us may not be favourable and planning for our longest holiday may take many years to achieve. Although our fi nances might be under pressure at this time, doing something now is going to be better than doing nothing.
