Vital Vi l lage A place for people to l ive and create

Page 3: XINA Vital Villages Draft 9

Start change through your own investment, work, life and consciousness!

60% of the world’s people are poor. Their potentials lay unused, being a loss for the world. The states’ national borders are not the true divisions. Deep social ruptures separate us.

Climate change, fossil raw material depletion, social insecurity and the financial crisis are most pressing issues. However, before they will ever de solved we must integrate the poor, work with them to make the world a place we all like it to be.

Vital Village opens a door for the MAYA to newly thrive. The poor of Yucatán are the same Mayan people who once managed a sustainable civilization of grand richness. Integrating the profound European technical and organizational knowledge with their re-empowerment a strong impulse for sustainable living will be created in the Vital Villages.

Vital Villages are places for people to lead meaningful productive lives, to be focussed, decide and act in their real own ways - whatever their background may be.

Vital Vi l lage Rule #1Invest in People’s Development

Page 4: XINA Vital Villages Draft 9

Be the love for people and for the earth, act responsibly without further assumptions.

Vital Villagers produce healthy energy and food for themselves and for their clients. They secure their own regional independence and combine it with responsibility for quality food and energy supplies to the city markets.

In a balanced economy the rural areas will always have to produce what the cities most need. Their production must, however, provide fair and secure rural incomes. To re-create this balance Vital Villages take the initiative to show the potentials of integral rural production providing sustained and healthy flows of food, water and energy.

The main production factor in a healthy economy is integral consciousness. It’s through our own consciousness that we enable people’s brains to develop healthily with good nutrition. Presence, awareness, perspective, attention and discernment lead to loving care extended by Vital Villagers.

Vital Vi l lage Rule # 2Sustain healthy energ y and food suppl ies

Page 5: XINA Vital Villages Draft 9

Make intelligent raw material and energy production the basis of our future economies.Be impeccable integrating all future technologies into the natural bio-cycles. Create no environmental poison and no waste. Soil and water management are key to this strategy. The past Maya civilization managed to do so, why not we?

Bio-cycle integration becomes possible when we start considering the natural resources and nature itself as a common world heritage. We must develop our respect for everybody’s dignity, learning and reframing our exploitation habits.

Intelligent resource management starts at the bottom line, where the resource is. It starts where people touch the water and the soil, learn and live together, in the worlds’ villages.

For the Vital Villages, achieving an intelligent and sustainable resource management around the world is a prerequisite to bringing our planet’s carbon use into balance. Intelligent bio-cycle technologies are the key to shaping this strategy.

Vital Vi l lage Rule # 3Create an intel l igent resource management

Page 6: XINA Vital Villages Draft 9

Overcome the separation of social concerns and economic, technological design.

There is a big social job to be done on earth. National state policy makers have failed, and there is no reason to assume they could be more effective in the future. Social conflicts and divisions happen as a consequence to the established structures. Those structures were once created to support exploitation and the concentration of power. They were never profoundly changed. Todays effects have specific causes.

Social Business Development structures focus on social integration, productivity and the distribution of wealth permitting a self-sustained process of continuous learning and personal growth. They so increase the overall potential for production and for productivity.

The sustainable world’s measure of success will be based upon the fulfillment of one’s individual pursuits and happiness, rather than the acquisition of wealth, property, and power.

Vital Villages implement human scale solutions for global change, for all to grasp, feel and understand what the change is about.

Vital Vi l lage Rule #4Develop Social Business Strategies

Page 7: XINA Vital Villages Draft 9

Vital Villages are designed to learn and practice these rules in a humane context, in a sound natural environment.

1. Investing in people’s development

2. Sustaining healthy energy and food supplies

3. Creating an intelligent resource management

4. Developing Social Business Strategies

Vital Villages are designed to become flourishing economies based on these 4 rules, run by Vital Villagers. You may become one of them!

Vital Vi l lage for you!

1. You can join us buying beautiful Vital Village forest land in Yucatán, México at a total cost of 5‘500€ per hectare.

This will be your land, to construct your future living space, invite others to live with you, to farm your own food, …

Being a Vital Villager you will participate in the decision making about the economy and the resource management of the Vital Village community of craftspeople, teachers, farmers and workers sharing sustainable options for life, work and design.

Every hectare financed or bought by a Vital Village investor will create permanent work opportunities for at least 2 local families

2. you may ask Trees for People S.A., the Vital Village operator, to manage the land for you and receive 10% of your investment as a yearly revenue.

Trees for People S.A. develops additional 9 hectares along the sustainable Agro-SilviCulture guidelines established in the Vital Village concept.

The investment in 240 hectares thus enables the Vital Village to manage a total area of 2‘400 hectares with beautiful forests, integrated energy plantings, organic food production, lakes and and tree gardens.

Vital Vi l lage for you!

Page 10: XINA Vital Villages Draft 9

3. Trees for People S.A. builds you a basic Mayan House and simple eco-bathroom at 3‘000 € total cost.

More elaborate houses are available in either the traditional Mayan or modern style at a cost between 200 and 400 € per square meter. A modern 100 square meter flat in the forest or in the village area may thus total 30 to 40‘000€ according to the details you wish to install.

All architecture will be ecologically sound including local and renewable energy supplies, natural air conditioning and waste disposal systems.

Vital Village approaches several major issues in global development.

1. The North-South deadlock in Economic DevelopmentThe rich will never share their wealth as long as they don’t get what they need.

2. The Global deadlock in Climate ChangeInstead of good intentions we need pragmatic approaches to change.

3. The Continuing Threats of Forest DestructionOnly the forests’ productivity avoids their destruction.

4. The Effects of the Economic Crisis in Rural AreasIt’s the moment for rural areas to re-consider partial autonomy.

5. The Need for a truly Sustainable Agri- and SilviCulture which needs to become self-reliant and truly productive.

The Project Background

Trees for People

Page 16: XINA Vital Villages Draft 9

1. 30 years ago Mayan villages were still alive Bernd Neugebauer learnt and practiced tropical agriculture and forestry in the Mayan village of Oxkutzcab.

2. 10 years ago Chan Ká Vergel was createdfollowing the example of his master teachers Bernd created the last and latest Mayan Tree Garden farms called the ‘Little Village in Paradise’ using the original natural ressources only.

3. Now the Vital Village is created to make the experience accessible to of 1‘000 families.

The Story

4. Methodologies for Rural Training & Development taught through books and training courses.

Trees for People Train ings in 26 countr ies

Page 20: XINA Vital Villages Draft 9

1. Passed 5 years in a Mayan Agri-Culture apprenticeship. Many people in the government were seriously interested, but unable to change anything.

2. Instructed hundreds in good organic agriculture and forestry. Only to learn that the conditions, or call it the financial and cultural system, never valued their progress.

3. Learnt that we need all embarking integral approaches to development. The inner person, the social group, the cultural value system and the institutional frame all need to re-adapt with change to make it work.

4. Always believed that effective development work would finance itself. Trying to implement this approach all on my own I fai led, neglecting the business side of my work in favor of the social and ecological engagement. Any real development needs to build on the teamwork of people representing the major capacities necessarily involved - the vil lage.

People in the Vita l Vi l lage

1. Mayans • the Maya civilization developed a vast cultural region in south-east Mexico and northern Central America. Their descendants in Yucatán constitute 80% of the rural population. Vital Villages refer to their wisdom and practical experience.

2. Mexican Nature Enthusiasts • there are plenty of people willing to change from the big cities to a natural environment, adding additional capabilities.

3. Foreigners in search of living true sustainability • many move to México, buy land and houses, but hardly ever find a way to integrate their skills and capacities.

4. All sincerely interested in a sustainable and truly ecological living will find a place •fine selection, good organization and slow growth will provide a platform for them.

Land acquisition: There are presently some 2‘400 has available of which 342 have already been acquired..

Irrigation and water supply are crucial to the success of the project. Wells will be drilled 20 meters deep.

Roads are constructed with little machinery and much handwork, based on 10 years experience.

Land clearing is considered a raw-material production process - instead of the usual land-clearing with bulldozers and fire which destroys or disrupts the vegetation and soil structure.

Wood-chip production is done with mobile equipment and pellets are made on a central storage place.

BioChar Bokashi production is done with all the biomass produced, dried, pelleted and then sold in 20 kilo paper bags. The carbon efficiency is 80%. 20% will be used on the Vital Village land itself.

Tree garden Agriculture and Silviculture will stepwise become the Vital Village’s long-term activities

Honey production and processing will accompany all production to guarantee pollination and additional income. A beekeepers organizations has already been established for this purpose.

1. Timber chips and pellets made are produced and sold as biofuels under long-term contract. The first year’s productions stems from machine clearing the planting areas. Any further production is from sustainably managed growth.

2. BioCharBokashi is an organic soil activator produced from lesser land clearing debris. It will begin replacing chemical fertilizers world wide. An international conference of Agriculture Ministers pronounced this change as urgent and need in Janaury 2010

3. Jatropha is planted on some 50% of the surface, the sustainable organic production per full hectare averages 5.5 tons. Some 10 to 12% of the production is consumed locally through local fuel-stations at local fuel market prices.

4. Native tree species are managed on the remaining forest sites and slowly upgraded by silviculture measures. After some 10 years the Vital Village land will have a well balanced distribution of forests, permaculture and agriculture units.

5. Bamboo is placed on some 10% of the surface under long-term contract.

6. Fruit trees are placed on specifically suited sites. Their production is sold to a growing regional market 150 kms away.

7. Some 1‘250 Beehives are installed, producing some 45 kgs organic honey per year each for the European market.

Vital Village is efficiently run like a company.

It’s profits shall not be extracted but shared between

the investors (partial land-owners) and

the Vital Village

to be re-invested into further Vital Village projects.

Social Business

Page 41: XINA Vital Villages Draft 9

Villages need businesses. Businesses have proven to be the best

approch to the organisation of complex issues.

A Sustainable Village Development thus relies on Entrepreneurship,

people’s interest, self esteem and initiative.

This involves a paradigm shift. Cultural fusion helps guiding the

leadership development. A different kind of Schooling is essential.

Basic Social Business Rules

1. Success in itself is not the central objective, yet it is basic for development, Vital Villages balance their Social, Ecological and Economic Realms. Co-investments are made to participate, not to optimize shareholder value.

2. Vital Villages implement fully organic schemes for water, energy, forests and foods. Autonomy and independance are more highly valued than the market perspectives.

3. Technology- and product development are emphazised for constant improvementachieving optimized product value chains and quality assurance.

Page 44: XINA Vital Villages Draft 9

PGS Cer t if icat ionThe transparency of quality and origin of products is guaranteed through participative certification processes of quality, carbon balance and social effects.

Participatory Group Supervision will be introduced as an alternative approach to organic certification supported by IFOAM International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements and will provide transparency of any production and its quality to the customers.

The approach was introduced by XINA in 1996. Spearheading a new era in organic quality guarantees found full support by XINA’s customers.

Page 45: XINA Vital Villages Draft 9

Vital Vi l lage Money

The local Vital Village economy will be designed to assure that internal expenditures are more highly valued than external spending. Generated income is to stay in the community and create jobs.

Concepts being discussed and elaborated include ”Local Money“ and ”Unconditional Basic Income“

Page 46: XINA Vital Villages Draft 9

Schools & Train ing

1. Schools and training, learning and reflection of one’s experiences play an imminent role in the Vital Village.School and training curricula are developed within the community

2. Praxis overrules theory, respect overrules knowledge and dignity overrules success.

3. Community members, ‘Foreigners’ and Mayans, will work and learn together about each other and from each other

4. Entrepreneurship being the main topic and design to be introduced as a key responsibility.
