Year 10 Photography Excursion
On Friday, 8th March the Year 10 Photography class had their first outing to experience taking photos on location. The class spent two periods at Mindarie Marina exploring the coastal location with a creative eye. Firstly, students took a series of landscape photos that demonstrated the techniques of the ‘rule of thirds’ and ‘leading line’ to create interesting photographic compositions. These shots will be used later this term for the next assessment task. The second part of the excursion was conducted like a scavenger hunt, where students were challenged to find buildings or objects that looked similar to letters of the alphabet. The class is currently working on compiling their own ‘photobet’ (an alphabet made through photos), and the work from this excursion will add to their assortment of shots for their final submission. The class battled high humidity and felt challenged by this, as many photographers do when shooting in different environments and weather conditions. A range of the work from the excursion will be on view as part of the Creations Exhibition in Term 3.

Wheelchairs for Kids
Visiting Wheelchairs for Kids was a self-developing experience for me. I realised how many children are disadvantaged around the world. The wheelchairs will help them to move around and become part of their communities. We were introduced to Beppie and Brother Ollie who told us how they have been volunteering for 20 or more years and getting so much joy by helping children. I shared this amazing experience with Chanel, Harrison, Will and Mrs Pearce, and we were allocated different jobs such as making knee separators, working with harnesses, making brakes and headsets. At morning tea, we joined the volunteers who told great personal stories and mentioned how much they love volunteering and being part of the community. Helping at Wheelchairs for Kids is a service that will remain with us all for a long time. Year 10 Wolfpack Program A group of enthusiastic Year 10 students have had the fantastic opportunity to learn valuable life skills through the Wolfpack Program. The eight-week course helps us with advice on how to be successful in the modern technological world and to keep a positive mindset when achieving personal goals.
After the first session and meeting with our energetic leaders, we looked forward to the Program and all that it has to offer. The sessions so far have included interactive activities, chocolate (donated by Mrs Pearce, Assistant Deputy Principal Year 10), and plenty of facts and skills that will serve us well into the future. Aboriginal Summer School in Townsville
At the end of 2018 I attended the Aboriginal Summer School of Excellence in Technology and Science (ASSETS) in Townsville, Queensland. I arrived on 13th December and was almost immediately engaged in activities. As part of Fire Ecology Victor, a fire ecologist took our group into the bush where he showed us traditional fire-starting methods and how to measure the area of the bush with a quadrat. Uncle Russel then showed us a variety of plants that could be eaten, used as medicine, soap or perfume. Victor and Uncle Russel took us to Turtle Rock, where we saw 100,000 years of amazing Indigenous artwork on the rocks.
During our visit to the Australian Institution of Marine Science (AIMS) we learnt about coral, DNA extracting, and how carbon dioxide and plastic affect the ocean. At the Museum of Tropical North Queensland, we had a group research activity in either Marine or Fire Ecology. My group chose Marine Biology and focussed on plastics. Our task was to collect items found on the beach. We collected large samples like lids, ropes and the sole of a shoe, and smaller samples like paint, oil and horse hair. As part of the assessment, our group created a PowerPoint, presenting our findings to other students, our mentors and parents. This was our final assessment for the ten days.
During the ten days I learned a lot and practised new skills. It was an amazing experience and I made so many new friends. I highly recommend this opportunity to other Indigenous students. Harmony Day
On Friday, 22nd March the College will celebrate Harmony Day. Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
Students are asked to dress in orange or cultural dress from their country of birth for a gold coin donation. Proceeds will go to Wheelchairs for Kids. Celebrations will include assembly, student versus staff sports games and an array of multicultural performances.

Languages Week in Week 7 Bravo to Roxsan Hamilton for winning the Year 7 Languages Week Canteen Poster Competition. Roxsan has won an international meal each day of Week 7 from our canteen, Irene’s café. Quiz - Win canteen vouchers Each morning of Week 7 students will receive an email from Mademoiselle Harrison at 7.30am with a cultural question. The first student to email Mademoiselle Harrison with the correct answer wins a canteen voucher. Japanese and French Languages Competitions All Languages students (Year 7-12) are enrolled in the College Languages Week Competition on Education Perfect. There is one competition for Japanese and one for French. The top Japanese and French classes will win a class Pizza Party. Introducing the Year 7 Rock Band Last week auditions were held for the Year 7 Rock Band. Students presented themselves very well, making the final decision very difficult.
We are delighted to announce the following students in the Band: Paige Kirby – Drums Grace O’Keeffe – Vocals Catherine Pusey – Vocals Jack Self – Guitar Asha Stainton – Piano Kavanagh Wild – Bass/Piano Thank you to all students who attended the auditions. We appreciate that you shared your talents and time with us. Students in the Rock Band will rehearse every Wednesday morning at 7.45am with Mr Bastow. We look forward to hearing our Year 7 Rock Band perform.
Sounds at Sunset The first music concert of the year, Sounds at Sunset, will be held on Thursday, 28th March in the College Undercroft. Pre-concert dance and DJ entertainment will start at 6.00pm, with a BBQ and refreshments available. The concert will start at 6.30pm. Slavery Free Easter Chocolate Pope Francis said that “every person ought to have the awareness that purchasing is always a moral – and not simply an economic – act.” Cocoa is a key ingredient of chocolate and many children in West Africa are enslaved to pick the cocoa beans. They will never taste the delicious chocolate their slavery helps produce. Buy only slavery-free chocolate to ensure no enslaved children were involved in the production. To buy slavery-free Easter chocolate look for any of these three certification symbols (below) on the wrappers: FAIRTRADE, Rainforest Alliance and UTZ. It’s delicious and you can buy it at ALDI, Haigh’s, Oxfam and other leading supermarkets and shops. Good news: Late in 2018 the Federal Government passed the Modern Slavery Act, which will ask big companies to report on their efforts to introduce slavery-free goods and services.

ACC Swimming Preparations for next week’s ACC Carnival will increase with an overnight camp for the squad leaving on Friday, 15th March. Our swimmers completed a tough session at Beatty Park on Thursday, 14th March before returning to the College for a few hours’ sleep and the chance to recharge the batteries. A technical session at Craigie Leisure Centre was preceded by a beach session at Sorrento and a delicious breakfast. We hope that the time we spent together will strengthen us as a team, and we are looking forward to competing at HBF Stadium next Thursday, 21st March.
