Year 11 Revision Booklet
Revision Information
Revision is to review previously studied material in preparation for an exam or test.
Revision is a very personal thing. Find what works for you and use it effectively Remember though, it
may depend on the subject or topic as to which way you revise.
We learn…
10% of what we read
20% of what we hear
30% of what we see
50% of what we see and hear
70% of what we say
90% of what we say and do
Therefore we need to combine these aspects for effective revision.
When revising we need to think about what we want to achieve.
Huish Revision = all topics in good to great depth
Top Tips for Revision
Prioritize your revision based on your exam timetable. Use a planner/wall chart to plan out your time
effectively.
Sit for one minute after you have finished your revision session thinking about the topic you have just
covered. Remember you MUST get tested later to check your understanding.
Organise your notes, books, folders and revision guides into workable form so you can find certain topics
quickly and simply. Remember if there are areas missing then speak to your teachers now.
If you stick to your revision timetable then come up with a sensible reward scheme with your parents as a
‘well done’ to you to keep you motivated.
High risk Moderate risk No risk
(minimum topics, great depth)
(enough topics, enough depth)
(all topics, little depth)
Best case scenario Excellent results Good results Average result vs. vs. vs. vs.
Worst case scenario Failure Average result Average result
Sing a Song
Whatever it is you are revising try and fit them into famous song lyrics. Christmas Carols work well, then
keep singing them back to yourself....or someone else may like to hear them? You can then sing them
(not out loud) in your mind during the exam.
Take Aim…..
Make sure each session/week/month you have specific aims and objectives for that subject and revision.
'Today in Science I will learn the first 10 elements on the periodic table'
Make sure you title all your revision materials (whatever you produce) and file them away so you can
have easy access to them later.
Use the study materials you put together for the mock exams also.
Toilet Door
Write key notes or facts on post-its or posters and put them in places you visit often e.g. toilet, fridge,
mirror etc.
Seeing these things over and over again mean they are more likely to stay in your memory for exams.
This is a great way of remembering quick facts, periodic tables, history dates etc.
Acronyms
This is different to Mnemonics as you are putting together a word rather than a sentence. This then can
trigger memory recall for a topic....
An example of this could be describing Mr Hastings on a bad day....Wild Inadequate Needless Deranged
Outrageous Waste of Space
This would then become WINDOWS and each letter is a prompt to a key word.
Go on.....Try it out!
Add a bit of COLO0R to your (revision) Life
Studies show that using various colours when completing notes, flash cards or learning maps help aid
revision.
Using black on white background is common place so we remember less of it when studying....so get
done to poundland and buy yourself a pack of pens to help you! Give it a try! (Other coloured pen out-
lets are available)
First Letter Triggers
This technique is also known as Mnemonics. It is an easy and quick way to remember short lists of
words.
Take the first letter of each word in a list and use them as the first letter of an imaginative sentence
(please always try and keep it clean…unless that really helps!) The first letter then 'triggers' your
memory of the original words you need to remember. A classic example of this is thinking of the col-
ours of the rainbow which could become…….
Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain = Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet
Embrace Technology
There are numerous websites and apps to help aid revision. If they are useful then try them out but
don’t spend ages searching the internet. The Academy also has GCSE Pod so why not make your own
learning tool for yourself or a friend? Revision songs, apps such as Revision Buddies, wordgames etc
you can play on your phone whilst sat in traffic or in the post office queue would be really handy and
help your long term memory if used regularly.
Asking for Help
Find out what you dont know, not what you do know!
Too often when studying or doing revision people stick to subjects they like or aspects of it they already
know and are confident on.....when revising do your 20 - 40 min session then leave it for a while (30
mins to 2hrs....not 2 wks!) then ask someone else to test you on the topic by a quick
Question and Answer session, possibly with a friend or member of the family. Make a
note of where you struggled so you can tackle these areas next time.
This will help you understand where you are at with the topic but also help the information
you got right go from short into long term memory if you keep at it if you keep doing this.
It will also prove to your parents you are working hard at revising and they will appreciate
being asked to be involved.
Take a Chill Pill
Before you head into that exam don’t stand around discussing what you do and don’t know and how
much revision you did. Relax and eat and drink water. Try to attend any ‘Revision Breakfast’ put on by the
Academy as these will give you great last minute tips.
After the exam don’t talk to others about what you answered. If it is different to your friend either you
or they (or god forbid both!!) got it wrong and it will only stress you both out worrying.
You can’t change anything after the exam, only through preparation before it!
Some truths about revision
Only you can do it and you have to want to do it.
If you revise and prepare well you will go into the exam more confident of being successful. If you have
tried your best and you, your family and your teachers know this then everyone will be happy with the
grade you achieved.
Time Out
You may have to prioritise or give up some things for the next few weeks. There is no ‘quick fix’ to
revision. Quality time spent effectively revising will see you reach your potential.
Making information stick
Revising is about recalling information for exams. If you spend hours in your room working but can’t
remember anything when tested then you have spent hours working but none revising. Short, sharp,
effective, aimed, manageable sessions are best to help your brain remember that information now and
the day of your exam.
Key questions before you pick up your pen in an exam
How long do I have to answer all the questions I need to?
How long does that give me for each question?
Are some questions longer than others? These will need more time.
How will I plan my answer out first so I include all important information?
Have I left myself time to check through my paper for mistakes and errors such as SPaG?
Planning Longer Answers in Exams
You have to work out how long you will have for each question. You should know this before the exam by
doing practice papers and working with your class teachers and parents on this.
Some people like to go through and mark which questions they will answer and in what order. This is up
to you but answering on a topic you know can give you confidence going forward.
If your question is 6 marks or higher plan your answer.
What is the question asking for?
How will you relate it back to the question?
Longer answer revision techniques
Drafting model answers using past papers
Use mind maps/notes to put together your model answers
Always get someone to mark your answer
Change the key terms in questions to develop a different answer but on the same topic when revising eg
discuss to demonstrate
Always use full sentences and paragraphs when writing an answer
Common Errors from Mocks – Don’t make the same mistake twice!
Not reading instructions carefully/correctly before starting
Lack of planning of answers
Not understanding and using key words/terms correctly
Not putting in formulas/workings out/calculations
Not having the correct equipment
Giving superficial answers to 2,3,4 mark questions
Poor use of SPaG (Spelling, grammar and punctuation)
Poor timings of the whole paper
Leaving answers blank
Clear lack of revision completed prior to exam
Key Terms in Questions
Demonstrate = show/prove how this is carried out.
Describe = give a full description of the relevant features.
Suggest = give your own ideas and thoughts.
Analyse = identify relevant features and state how they are linked and how each of them relates to the
topic.
Explain = give reasons to support your views.
Justify = give reasons for the points you are making so the reader knows what you are thinking and feel-
ing.
Discuss = what are the positives and negatives of each idea/factor.
How do you want to feel opening that exam envelope in the
summer?
Put the work in now!
GCSE Pod is a website where students can listen to or download high quality MP3 podcasts that sup-
port revision in English, English literature, geography, history and biology. The podcasts also contain visu-
al cues to support the learning and are specifically designed for the exam boards we use so, for example,
there are four podcasts available for each poem in the AQA English Anthology.
Students who have trialled here at the Academy the use of GCSEPod speak very positively about the
quality of the podcasts and it recently won the 2015 BETT (British Educational Training and Technology)
Award for secondary school digital content.
To access the podcasts, students need to register online or download the App
1. Log on to gcsepod.com
2. Select Login
3. Select ‘New Here? Get Started’
4. Enter first name, last name and date of birth
5. For School search for Huish and select the Academy when it is shown.
6. Choose a username and password (we recommend that students use their network username and
password)
7. Type in a password hint such as ‘school login’ .
8. Save.
When the registration is complete, students will have immediate access to the site. To access the
podcasts they need, please click on BROWSE CONTENT.

Geography revision overview
Exam dates: SDME 22nd May pm, Key Themes 6th June pm
All of the lesson resources as well as digital versions of the revision guide are available
on google classroom – this is a fantastic resource and is a good start point. The class
code is 7w81mg.
Use your SDME revision booklet to revise for your SDME but you should spend much
more time revising for the Key Themes paper.
The Key Themes exam is worth 50% of the final grade. Use the revision guide to re-
view the different topics, then complete the exam questions on the topic you have just
revised. Use the cards to revise the case studies –make sure you know them all.
Should you wish to purchase a revision guide we recommend www.cgpbooks.co.uk and
make sure you buy the guides for OCR GCSE B Geography.
There is also GCSE Pod which is good for key terms and some of the processes but it
doesn’t cover everything.
Use the checklist below as an overview of what you need to revise.
Rivers and Coasts – Key themes examination Revised

How to revise for geography Step 1: If you have not done this already in class then use the blank timetable below to create a plan for what you are going to revise and when, simply write in the content from the checklist on the previous page. Step 2: Review the topic you are revising, you can either use your folder, a revision guide, google class-room or the internet to do this. Step3: Complete the revision guide that your geography teacher gave you for this section alternatively you could create mindmaps or revision cards but its important you distil, transform or summarise the information as this will help you understand it. Step 4: Test yourself – painful but the most important part. The best thing would be to complete the past questions provided in the revision guide, you can then take these to your geography teacher for checking.
Population and Settlement – SDME examination
Why do LEDCs and MEDCs have different population structures?
What happens to a countries population as its economy develops?
Causes, effects and responses to migration
How does the pattern of land use change in cities in MEDC s and LEDCs?
