Entry to a State Training Provider (TAFE); Apprenticeship or Traineeship.
Entry to University - ATAR Australian Tertiary Admission Rank calculated and issued by TISC.

WACE RequirementsBreadth and Depth Complete at least 20 course units. Up to 10 course equivalents can
be from endorsed programs. Complete 4 units of English or Literature during Yr 11 and 12 (at least
two of these units must be studied in Year 12). In Year 12 study at least one pair of course units from each of List A
(arts/languages/social science) and List B (mathematics/science/technology).
Achievement Standard Achieve a C grade average or better across the best 16 course units
of which at least 8 units must be completed in Year 12. Endorsed programs and /or VET credit transfer can reduce the required number of course units by up to 6 units.
English Language Competence Achieve a C grade or better in any Stage 1 or higher course unit in
English or Literature.
WACE Exams Stage 3 courses, unless exempt. Stage 2 Optional.

WACE Examinations for Stage 2 Year 12 students are
Optional, however, the achievement in these courses will NOT
count in the calculation of an ATAR.
A student studying Stage 3 courses and VET will be exempt
from sitting exams only if they are:
Enrolled to complete units of competency (from related industry areas), in excess of 220 nominal hours in Year 12 …
AND … Enrolled in 3 or less Stage 2 and /or Stage 3 unit pairs.

The completion of an AQF VET
Certificate or VET hours in Year 10 or 11
does not qualify a Year 12 student for
exam exemption.

Year 12 students who are enrolled in 6 or more WACE
exams.
Students enrolled in six or more Stage 2 and/or Stage 3
course units and do not wish to sit the WACE exam in their
6th or 7th course can apply for exemption. It is expected that
Students will sit a minimum of 5 examinations.

Students opting out of the Stage 2 WACE exams; inform school of intention by 16th May; deadline is 2nd July.
WACE exam exemptions for students studying VET and 3 or less Stage 2 or Stage 3 courses must be applied in writing to the Curriculum Council by 2nd July.
WACE exam exemptions for students studying 6 or more examinable courses 2nd July.
Students who are thinking of not sitting all of their WACE (external) exams must see Ms Schofield. Please don’t leave it to the deadline.

Courses are split into competitive and non -competitive for entry purposes;
About 30% of courses are competitive and selection criteria need to be meet;

Qualification pathway- maximum score = 29 points eg Cert II Hospitality
Work experience/employment – maximum score = 29 points; 0.002 points per hour workedIncludes Workplace Learning, work experience, voluntary work and paid work.
Secondary education/Skill Development Maximum score = 42 points Scoring based on English result, plus best two other results

Is Attaining WACE Enough?
To be competitive students taking a university pathway should aim to score:
Stage 3 courses - a ‘B’ (65% +) or higher Stage 2 courses - an ‘A’ (75% +).
Students aiming for a STP/TAFE Certificate IV or
Diploma may need: ‘A’ grades National VET Qualification Work experience to be competitive.

INDIVIDUAL EXAM STUDENT CASE STUDY The reason why students must put every possible effort into the
exam!
STUDENT A School Score = 54 Grade = C Raw WACE Exam = 42 Scaled Score = 45
STUDENT B School Score = 54 Grade = C Raw WACE Exam = 67 Scaled Score = 58
Replicated across all WACE exams, Student A will produce an ATAR of 54. No university directly admits students with this ATAR. Competitive portfolio entry into some ECU courses will be the only option available to this student.
Replicated across all WACE exams, Student B will produce an ATAR of 74. This will create a wide range of opportunities for this student at Curtin, Murdoch and ECU.

Students may wish to enrol in an examination as a Private Candidate.
This means that they can’t have studied that course at school or at S.I.D.E., although they may have studied the Stage 1 course.
Only the examination mark counts towards ATAR.
Applications close 2nd July (without late fee) and a $37.00 cheque is payable to the Schools Curriculum & Standards Authority. Forms are available from Ms. Schofield.
Late applications will be accepted until 21st July (an extra fee will apply).

For candidates who may be disadvantaged in demonstrating their knowledge and skills in the WACE exam.
The problem must relate to examination situations.
Evidence provided must come from the school, psychologist and medical practitioner.
Apply for Special Examination Arrangements – completed applications close 16th May.
Contact Ms Barbara Goldflam by Friday 14th March as the application process is extensive.

For circumstances beyond student’s control.
For temporary sickness - non permanent disability.
For sickness or misadventure occurring during or just prior to the exam.
The candidate is responsible for gathering the evidence.
Applications close 25th November.
Forms available from the exam centre ( or you can contact Ms Gilchrist).
Decision is final - appeal available on the process only.
If approved, the SCSA calculates the examination mark using your school assessment as a basis. The higher of the actual examination mark and the calculated examination mark becomes the examination mark that is given to
you for that examination.

Two things that can interfere greatly with revision:Not starting early enough;Not knowing how to revise ( if unsure – seek
help/advise).
The Learning Support Advisors (Ms Goldflam and MsSayers) have visited all Yr 12 Mentor classes to advise onStudy techniques.
A 6-week program of Study Skills will be run in the weeks leading up to Semester 1 & 2 exams.

REGULAR MEALS REGULAR SLEEP REGULAR EXERCISE Know your best time to study. Don’t spend too long on any one course. Work in 45-50 minute sessions. Do the “easy” things when you are getting
tired If there is not enough time – don’t leave
out whole sections . Take it easy the night before an exam –
don’t study late, do light revision only, do some general overview & diagrams.
