MESSAGE FROM
JULIA BUXTON
Many congratulations to our graduating class of 2017. The School of Public Policy (SPP) is proud of your achievement and we thank you for all that you have contributed to our academic community and the life of the School. I hope that the diversity of geography, experience, and perspective that you brought to SPP has served as an excellent learning experience and that enduring friendships remain, no matter the physical distance between you. 2017 has certainly been a memorable year for the Central European University. Alongside colleagues in the NGO and independent media communities, we faced a serious and sustained attack from the government of Hungary on our values and on our identity. The most salient lesson for both CEU and SPP is that our alumnae and alumni feel an enormous sense of pride in our institution, and that they will mobilize with speed to defend threats to our existence and to academic freedom. We hope that you embrace this connection and community and become part of the global bond that unifi es our graduates, and we sincerely thank you for the initiatives that you have engaged in to defend rights and freedoms threatened in Hungary and elsewhere. I wish you every fulfi lment and success for the future and hope that your time at SPP enables you to make the strides in the direction your heart, luck, and career planning take you.
Acting Dean of SPP
