Ground Force“We have to go back, Kate. We have to go back!” Now, Kevin is prob-

ably the only owner who understands this reference to the hit televi-sion show “Lost.” It’s from the stunning Season 3 finale when we learnthat Jack and Kate got off the island, and for some mysterious reason,Jack desperately wants to return. In the YFFL, most owners return toplayers they had success with in the past. Most recently, Harold tookFrank Gore No. 8 overall in 2008, and No. 6 overall last season. ChrisJohnson is a no-brainer to return to the Ground Force in 2010.

1 CHRIS JOHNSON

Double DsFor six seasons (2003-08), LaDainian Tomlinson was a top three

pick. It was the Tomlinson Era, much like it was the Marshall Faulk Erafrom 2000-03. Now, it’s Adrian Peterson’s turn. Unless Dan’s hatredfor Brett Favre runs so deep that he steers away from all things purple,Peterson is the logical choice. Peterson is younger than Maurice Jones-Drew and Michael Turner, and could get the ball more this season withthe injuries sustained by the Vikings’ wide receiving core. If Little JackHorner doesn’t pull out a plum, look for Double Ds to select Ray Rice.

2 ADRIAN PETERSON

Yard WeedsDavid Rimel’s current stint in the YFFL dates back to 2004, but he

did fill in for another owner during the 2000 draft. Seven picks awayfrom David’s No. 22 pick, I said to myself, “Dorsey Levens.” Sureenough, David uttered his name. Golly, I love those moments. WithChris Johnson and Adrian Peterson gone, the Yard Weeds turn to eitherMaurice Jones-Drew or Ray Rice. Jones-Drew scored seven more touch-downs than Rice last year, but Rice racked up 702 receiving yards.Yardage is easier to replicate than touchdowns. Rice to Yard Weeds!

3 RAY RICE

Silent AssassinsI’ve been known to put out one or two “feelers” to owners to gauge

their expectation of their draft position. With Ray Rice climbing up thecharts leading up to last year’s draft, I asked Jon if he would be inter-ested in Ray Rice at No. 16. He gave an emphatic “no.” Instead, henabbed him at No. 48 overall and went on to win Super Bowl XIII. Ifavailable, the Silent Assassins take Rice again, but I’m banking he’salready gone. So, Jon will select Maurice Jones-Drew, who scored 16touchdowns and rushed for 1,391 yards in 2010.

4 MAURICE JONES-DREW

D.C. Land SharksI have yet to find a fantasy ranking or mock draft where Michael

Turner is not a top five pick. It seems everyone is banking on him rush-ing for more than 1,600 yards and 17 touchdowns again. The problemis that was in 2008, not 2009, where he missed five games. If it wereme, I’d drop Turner to No. 7. But we’re not talking about me. We’retalking about Daniel. Despite missing those games, Turner still scored10 touchdowns and averaged 4.9 yards per carry. History shows theD.C. Land Sharks like explosive backs and Turner fits the bill.

5 MICHAEL TURNER

Going Nowhere FastNow entering his sixth season, this is the highest Going Nowhere

Fast has ever drafted. Every year Scott drafts the best running back onthe board. How about one of the two most reliable? Over the past threeyears, Frank Gore averaged 1,086 rushing yards and nine touch-downs. Meanwhile, Steven Jackson averaged 1,156 rushing yards andsix touchdowns. What to do? The Rams have a rookie quarterback andinexperienced wide receivers, which means defenses will stack againstthe run. Gore is a safer pick.

6 FRANK GORE

Longball NutsackersNo, I don’t think Monty is going to take the first tight end with the

No. 7 pick overall (see Mark Chmura on back page). Despite what hap-pened in 1997, however, for all intents and purposes this is his rookieseason. Could he draft the first quarterback or wide receiver? Possibly.Could he select a running back that is further down on my list? I couldeasily see him taking Jamaal Charles or Ryan Grant. But I’m going tostick with my gut: Monty is a 49ers fan, and will gladly take Frank Gore,if available. Otherwise, he turns to Steven Jackson.

7 STEVEN JACKSON

Law DogsIn my opinion, the top two tiers of running backs are now gone. We

are now left with running backs who either share the backfield or aresimply just not as appealing. It was pick No. 9 last year where the firstnon-running back was taken. Could it be No. 8 this year? I doubt it. Fornine seasons Jeff has stuck with selecting a running back. I think Jeff’scomputer tells him to take DeAngelo Williams. But with the Panthers’poor preseason and the Law Dogs having Williams in 2009 and finish-ing 8-10, Jeff says “no” to his computer and selects Cedric Benson.

8 CEDRIC BENSON

Collins’ Sin MachinesFor two years in a row, Collins’ Sin Machines has picked No. 1. Those

picks were no-brainers. Finally Tommy has to make a real decision.Three years ago, Tommy took a risk at this very pick with LaurenceMaroney coming off a season of 745 rushing yards. Maroney rushed for90 more yards and one fewer touchdown. Come to think of it, perhapshe should have made the Top 10 Bust List (see back page). A surprisepick at No. 9 would be Ryan Mathews, but unless one of the eight afore-mentioned players drop, DeAngelo Williams will be a Machine.

9 DEANGELO WILLIAMS

Alcoholics UnanimousI don’t love this pick. Over the past six seasons, half of Alcoholics

Unanimous’ picks have come later than pick No. 10. Of those threepicks, PD selected the first wide receiver in the draft twice. He couldeasily do it again with Andre Johnson, or even take the first quarter-back. The other instance was a gamble on rookie Julius Jones in 2004.Ryan Grant is not your typical AU prospect, but last year he gambledon Kevin Smith in Round 2 and got burned. Perhaps for the first timein a long time, AU’s first two picks will be safe ones.

10 RYAN GRANT

Dazed and ConfusedBrent will take DeAngelo Williams or Ryan Grant if they fall to No. 11,

but I they are out of the equation. Now, here’s an interesting statistic:Dazed and Confused has picked at No. 9 or later four of the past sevendrafts. Three times it was a wide receiver and once it was a quarterback.Does this trend continue in 2010? Yes. I think Brent wants a runningback, but there’s too much risk to pull the trigger on anyone besideWilliams or Grant. Aaron Rodgers shined in 2009 and in the preseason,and is expected to be the top quarterback in 2010.

11 AARON RODGERS

Sir Allgood’s DragonsWhen you rush for more than 1,000 yards and still average 5.9 yards

per carry, you have something special. But it’s tough to know how bigof an impact Jamaal Charles will have in 2010 with the addition ofThomas Jones. We all remember the heartache of choosing betweenPriest Holmes or Larry Johnson in Kansas City. Charles could be gonebefore pick No. 12, or he might still be available to the Dragons at No.21. Frank would prefer Ryan Grant (if he drops to No. 12) or may takethe risk in drafting rookie Ryan Mathews.

12 JAMAAL CHARLES

Supernatural Death SquadI think Supernatural Death Squad is one of two teams that are very

likely to make rookie Ryan Mathews a first round pick. The other team:The Gargoyles. Unfortunately for Alex, Glenn gets the first crack atLaDainian Tomlinson’s replacement. So far in the preseason, Mathewshas gained 156 yards on 34 carries, a 4.6 yards per carry average. IfMathews is gone, look for Glenn to choose Andre Johnson or DrewBrees. I think Mathews is the only running back that peaks the interestof the Supernatural Death Squad at pick No. 13.

13 RYAN MATHEWS

JuggernautsFalling to pick No. 14 may come as a surprise. Andre Johnson is pro-

jected to be one of the top five fantasy producers for 2010. He hascaught for more than 1,500 yards in each of the past two seasons. Ithink he could go as early as No. 10, but he won’t fall past No. 14. Joshwill gladly take him. The Juggernauts will also look to Drew Brees orPeyton Manning if Johnson is not available. At pick No. 14, the value atrunning back has diminished and he can turn his attention to a run-ning back, such as LeSean McCoy, in Round 2.

14 ANDRE JOHNSON

The GladiatorsBrent Thomas will maintain his tradition of grabbing a quarterback in

one of the first two rounds. This year it will likely be in Round 1. Why?If he wants Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees or Peyton Manning, chances areone is gone before pick No. 15, possibly two. It’s safer for the Gladiatorsto select the one he wants before the Gargoyles select a quarterback atNo. 16-17. The Saints have a pass-first offense and a ton of targets mak-ing him the best choice for Brent. If he waits until Round 2 for his QB,he will look to Shonn Greene, Randy Moss or Reggie Wayne.

15 DREW BREES

GargoylesI’m confident that the Gargoyles land one of the top three elite

quarterbacks – Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees or Peyton Manning – atNo. 16 or 17. The bigger question is who will be the Gargoyles’ otherpick. If Ryan Mathews falls, Alex will take a chance on the rookie run-ning back. But I doubt that will happen. Instead, look for Alex to mir-ror Jon’s strategy in 2009 by taking a wide receiver with his quarter-back. If he takes Manning, look for the Gargoyle to take Randy Moss.If he lands Brees or Rodgers, Alex will select Reggie Wayne.

Top 10 First Round Busts10) Cadillac WilliamsEver heard of the “sophomore slump?” Collins’ Sin Machinesgot to experience it in 2006 with the selection of CadillacWilliams at No. 9 overall. Williams rushed for only 798 yardsand one touchdown – a far cry from his 1,178 yards and sixtouchdowns in his rookie season.

9) Matt ForteHere’s another “sophomore slumper.” On most depth charts,Matt Forte is somewhere between 20th and 35th among run-ning backs this season. Yet Sir Allgood’s Dragons thoughtthey had something special by taking him No. 4 overall lastyear. Owner Frank Allgood also took a third round chance onTerrell Owens at No. 36 overall. Needless to say, things did-n’t work out well for the 6-13 Dragons in 2009.

8) Ronnie BrownWith Ricky Williams suspended, Ronnie Brown became thefeatured back for the Miami Dolphins in 2006. In 2007, theGladiators selected Brown with the No. 16 pick overall. ByOctober, Brown was out for the season with a torn ACL.Unfortunately for Brent Thomas, he waited until pick No. 80to select his second running back, Warrick Dunn, who underperformed that season.

7) Fred TaylorThe Silent Assassins selected Fred Taylor No. 3 overall in the2001 draft. Taylor played in the first two games that seasonbefore suffering a groin injury and missing the rest of the sea-son. Stephen Davis (No. 4) and Ricky Williams (No. 5) went onto rush for 1,432 and 1,372 yards, respectively.

6) Jerry RiceThe league had an auction format in its inaugural season in1997. The first player chosen was Jerry Rice for $4.5 millionby David Rimel. As neophytes to fantasy, the league quicklylearned Rice was a bargain (players went for as high as $8 mil-lion). But Rimel got the short end of the stick when Rice brokehis kneecap in the second game of the season.

5) LaMont JordanAfter playing backup for the New York Jets for four seasons,LaMont Jordan became the man in Oakland – worthy of a No.21 pick by the D.C. Land Sharks in 2005. Jordan rushed formore than 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns. Unfortunately,the Silent Assassins thought Jordan could replicate thosenumbers. Using the No. 11 pick in the 2006 draft, Jordan pro-duced less than 500 yards rushing and only two touchdowns.

4) Deuce McAlisterThree straight seasons of more than 1,000 yards rushing andat least eight touchdowns made Deuce McAlister a logical No.4 pick for Dazed and Confused in 2005. However, after suf-fering a torn ACL in his right knee, the Pro Bowl running backwas placed on injured reserves after only five games.

3) Cedric BensonAfter producing only 647 yards and six touchdowns in 2006,the league was baffled when the Supernatural Death Squadtook Cedric Benson No. 13 overall. In 2007, he rushed foronly 27 more yards and two fewer touchdowns than the pre-vious season. Glenn Thomas’ team did win the Super Bowlthat year. However, it had everything to do with Randy Moss.

2) Jamal AndersonComing off 1,846 rushing yards, 319 receiving yards and 18touchdowns in 1998, it’s hard to wonder why Jamal Andersonwasn’t one of the top three picks. Of course, back then theowners were still new to fantasy football. In the 1999 draft,the first round consisted of five quarterbacks, four runningbacks and three wide receivers. Unfortunately for the SilentAssassins, Anderson suffered a season-ending knee injury inthe second game of the season. This was on top of losing hisNo. 18 pick overall, Vinny Testaverde, in the first week. Partof Jon’s season was saved, however, with the addition of freeagent Kurt Warner, who went on to toss 4,353 passing yardsand 41 touchdowns.

1) Mark ChmuraIn 1998, Monty Desai uttered thename “Mark Chmura” with theNo. 3 pick overall (We think it wasNo. 3. We didn’t keep recordsback then.) The Packer’s tightend had 417 yards receiving andsix touchdowns that year – notquite Round 1 material. Chmurawent on to being acquitted ofhaving sex with the babysitter for his children, and admittinghis behavior “wasn’t something a married man should do.”
