Challenge question: Ben has between 20 and 30 fireworks. He sorts them into groups of 5 and he has

2 left over. He sorts them again but this time into groups of 2 and he has 1 left over. He sorts them into

groups of ten and he has 7 left over.

How many fireworks does Ben have? Use manipulatives to work through the problem.

Day 3: Let’s do some addition today. Warm up your brain by adding together 2 1-digit numbers, this

skill is needed for column addition. You could say some out loud, get an adult to quiz you, do a speed

Use your favourite method for these additions, you will need a separate piece of paper to do

your working out. Start at the bottom of the mountain.

Day 4: Subtraction today. Warm up your brain by counting backwards, then rehearse taking away a

1-digit from a 1-digit – you need to be able to do this accurately for column subtraction. You could

Maths Challenges:

Spelling

You can either practise the spellings onto a piece of paper and have a go putting them into sentences

or you can print the spelling pages out which are at the end of this document.

The suffix –ful to turn a noun into an adjective: restful, hopeful, playful, wonderful

-ful: mouthful, careful, powerful, beautiful.

Homophones: bear / bare, whale / wail, which / witch

Year 2 common words: each, once, bird, when

Day 1

Read ‘Waiting by the Window’ by A.A. Milne (see below). As you read it, underline or highlight the

rhyming words at the end of each sentence. Look at the spelling of each rhyming pair of words and

see if they use the same phonemes or are different. Have a go at writing 2 sentences about 2 flies

having a race across a window. And see if you can make the final 2 words rhyme. If you want a

challenge, try a write 4, 6 or 8 sentences.

Read ‘On the Ning Nang Nong’ by Spike Milligan (there is also a very old video of Spike Milligan

saying his poem on YouTube). As you read it, underline or highlight the words that are nonsense

words. Then have a go at replacing each nonsense word with your own VERY SILLY choice of

nonsense words.

Day 3 Read ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’ by Edward Lear. This is also a nonsense poem but see if you can make sense of it. Have a go at drawing a picture of the owl and the pussy cat getting married and some of the other strange things that happen to them.

You can find out about gravity in lots of videos. Here is just one that might help you to understand.

A good way to watch gravity in action is to try and stop an object from falling to the ground and a good example of this is a marble run. If you have a marble run see how slowly you can make a

marble hit the ground or you could make one with paper, objects, furniture or even the stairs (make sure no one gets a marble dropped on their head!!!!) PE Continue to exercise for half an hour a day if you can, including following videos, going for a walk, run or bike ride or even fly a kite if it’s windy. Remember, if your parents say it’s ok, you can meet up with a couple of friends at the park and play a game as long as you are 2 metres apart. PE this half term would have been tennis. If you have a tennis racquet you could practise hitting the ball forearm, against a partner or a wall and try and hit it back and control it. If you don’t have a racquet, you could use your hand. Once you are good at controlling the ball and can hit it back 10 times, you could try and add some backhand shots too. Art This would have been lesson 2 about Claude Monet. We would have looked at some more of his pictures and then used a different medium to create our own. I have found a tutorial for your own version of his bridge which you could have a go at. If that looks a bit tricky, you could use paints or pencils to draw some bridges.
