Downloading Documents from Lexis Nexis to your iPad. Using Lexis Nexis with the iPad is as straightforward as it is using a PC or Mac. However, one of the fantastic features that the iPad has, providing you have downloaded iBooks from the App store (as discussed in chapter ?), is that you can download the PDF file directly to the iPad, put it into iBooks and read it as though it was a paper document in front of you. This is a fantastic feature as not only is it extremely fast cutting out waiting for print outs, but it is also great for the environment. Alongside the ability to read the document in iBooks, it is also possible to set up separate “bookcases” within the program and separate your respective cases and journals into relevant subject areas. Before I demonstrate how to create separate sections for specific subjects I will show you how to download a journal onto the iPad and import it into iBooks. Downloading Documents from Lexis Nexis to your

iPad.

Using Lexis Nexis with the iPad is as straightforward as it is using a PC or

Mac. However, one of the fantastic features that the iPad has, providing you

have downloaded iBooks from the App store (as discussed in chapter ?), is

that you can download the PDF file directly to the iPad, put it into iBooks and

read it as though it was a paper document in front of you. This is a fantastic

feature as not only is it extremely fast cutting out waiting for print outs, but it is

also great for the environment. Alongside the ability to read the document in

iBooks, it is also possible to set up separate “bookcases” within the program

and separate your respective cases and journals into relevant subject areas.

Before I demonstrate how to create separate sections for specific subjects I

will show you how to download a journal onto the iPad and import it into

iBooks.

Step 1:Log into Lexis Nexis

Click on the Northumbria University link.

Step 2:Northumbria University log in

Enter your university log in details and tick the agreement box.

Step 3: Downloading your journal (or case, statute, precedent etc)

To download click on the disk image:

Step 4: Download options

Prior to actually downloading, you will be given the option to open the file as a

PDF (there are a number of other choices but for iBooks this is the best

option). You can also select to create a custom cover page for it too.

Once you are happy click the download button.

Step 5: Downloading the document.

Once you click the download button this box will appear, by clicking the blue

link you will download the document to a temporary window on your iPad.

Step 6: Saving the document and opening in iBooks.

As mentioned previously the document will be opened in a temporary window:

In order to make this document accessible in iBooks you must double tap the

area directly under the address bar, this will bring up the following options:

By clicking Open in iBooks the document will be downloaded to a generic

Bookshelf called “PDFs”.

Step 7: Accessing the “PDFs” Bookshelf and creating subject specific

Bookshelves.

Once the document is opened in iBooks the next screen will be displayed:

In order to move your document from the “PDFs” Bookshelf to one of your

choice you will need to click on the library button in the top left of the image

above. This will take you to the following screen:

The next step is to press the edit button in the top right hand corner of the

picture above, which will allow you to pick the document that you wish to

move:

After tapping on the document you wish to move a small tick will appear on it,

the next step is to select the move button in the top left of the page leading to

the following menu:

As you should only have the options for “Books” and “PDFs” you will need to

tap the New button, which will then bring up a box in which you can create a

Bookshelf and name it however you wish. After doing so the document

selected will be saved to that Bookshelf (in this instance for me it was criminal

litigation) and it will be ready for you to read whenever you wish.
