A NOTE FROM OUR SEMINARIANS 3

Weekly Communion Service on Saturdays at 8:45 am in the Crane Road Parking lot For those of our parish family, who because of health concerns, are unable to attend Mass

due to the risk of catching the virus, please come and receive our Lord in the Eucharist on Saturday mornings. This is not open to those who are able to come to Mass and does not count as a Sunday Mass. Drive up after 8:35 am. You will be directed by the Knights of Columbus to come into the parking lot,

parking in every other space, and tune in your car Radio to FM 104.1. Please stay in your car for the short Communion Service broadcast through your car radio. Then when it’s time for

Communion, you can stand outside your car for the priest or deacon to come to you and distribute Holy Communion to you. If unable to stand comfortably, stay in your car and roll the window down; and you can receive the Eucharist through the open

window. Please stay until after the closing prayer. Prior to exiting on Crane Road, look for a Knight who will be offering the opportunity for you to pick up a bulletin and/or drop off your weekly offering envelope.

Please Help by notifying and/or bringing those who are elderly and/or not able to be in the Mass, because of compromised health conditions, that this is available for them, without the need to sign up.

If you have questions, Please call the Office at 630-338-8000, from 8 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday.

Dear Parishioners,

It is great to be back at St. Patrick’s for another year. For those of you who do not know, my name is Grant Colborn. I am a Seminarian for the Diocese of Rockford, and I am entering my first year of Theology at Mundelein Seminary, which means in four years, God willing, I will be ordained a priest of Jesus Christ. I was fortunate enough to be assigned to St. Pat’s earlier this year when Mundelein suspended classes because of the coronavirus pan-demic. I was also here this past summer as St. Pat’s was my summer assignment. Now, both Ian and I have St. Patrick’s as our Teaching Parish which means the two of us will be here on the weekends assisting at Mass and other parish programs such as religious education and Confirmation prep.

A little bit about myself. I am from a small town on the west side of the diocese called Pecatonica. I went to school at Pecatonica High School before attending St. Ambrose University in Davenport, IA where I received my B.A. in Theology. I was a part of the track and cross-country teams both in high school and college and I am still an avid runner today. I enjoy sports, especially Chicago Cubs baseball and I am constantly practicing the virtue of patience while watching the Bears play football. I love music, movies, the Peanuts comic strip and my favorite television show is Parks and Recreation. I look forward to getting to know each one of you as I journey toward the priesthood.

Peace, Grant

Pax et Bonum St. Patrick’s Parish,

My name is Ian Ordoñez. I am a 2nd Year Seminarian studying for the Diocese of Rockford. I was born in Puebla, Mexico on June 11, 1995. I was raised in Woodstock, IL. Although I lived in Woodstock for the greater part of my life, as a family, our home parish was the Church of Holy Apostles in McHenry. After graduating from Wood-stock High School, I attended McHenry County College for the first two years of my collegiate studies, and then transferred out to the University of Wisconsin in Madison for the latter two years. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Molecular Biology and English. After college, I worked at the UW- Hospital, under the Cardiac Anesthesia team.

Some of my hobbies and interests include playing soccer and tennis, strumming the guitar here and there, writing some poetry, enjoying the outdoors, watching good movies, and listening to good music. I enjoy learning about the saints and have a particular devotion to our Blessed Mother, St. Francis of Assisi, St. John Paul II, St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Thérèse of Lisieux, and St. John the Baptist. I look forward to serving you all to the best of my ability.

May God bless you all now and forevermore.

Ian Ordoñez

This week our Crane Road Church Tabernacle Candle burns

In Memory of: Lucy Philip

And our Downtown Church Tabernacle Candle burns

In Memory of: David Brady

May this light which reminds us of Jesus’ presence in the Tabernacle

welcome them into His eternal presence.

Daily Masses at 8:00 a.m. and Sunday Masses at 9:30 a.m. will continue to be live streamed until further notice

on our homepage, Facebook or YouTube page. The priests will be covering all the Mass intentions

as scheduled, by church location.

Join in Praying a 54-Day Rosary Novena for Our Nation Now through November 1

The difficult times we now face in the United States are first and foremost “a crisis of saints.” In such times, prayer is the primary means by which we and the saints ask God that thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Therefore, I invite all parishioners to pray together a “Totus Tuus” 54-Day Rosary Novena, beginning on September 12, the memorial of the Holy Name of Mary, and ending on the Solemnity of All Saints, November 1.

How to pray the Novena: As a family, or as an individual, simply pray these intentions before praying the daily Rosary. The Rosary is prayed every day of the Novena. Visit our website for specific intentions at https://www.stpatrickparish.org/news/join-in-praying-a-54-day-rosary-novena-for-our-nation-september–12/ And praying the rosary at https://www.stpatrickparish.org/liturgy-sacraments/basic-catholic-prayers/

PREPARING FOR ELECTION 2020 12

Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship A Call to Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United States

As Catholics, we bring the richness of our faith to the public square. We draw from both faith and reason as we seek to af irm the dignity of the hu-man person and the common good of all. With renewed hope, we, the Catholic Bishops of the United States, are re-issuing FormingConsciencesforFaithfulCitizenship, our teaching document on the political responsibility of Catholics, which provides guidance for all who seek to exercise their rights and duties as citizens.

Everyone living in this country is called to participate in public life and contribute to the common good.1 In RejoiceandBeGlad[GaudeteetExsultate], Pope Francis writes:

Your identi ication with Christ and his will involves a commitment to build with him that kingdom of love, justice and universal peace. . . You cannot grow in holiness without committing yourself, body and soul, to giving your best to this endeavor.2

The call to holiness, he writes, requires a “ irm and passionate” defense of “the innocent unborn.” “Equally sacred,” he further states, are “the lives of the poor, those already born, the destitute, the abandoned and the underprivi-leged, the vulnerable in irm and elderly exposed to covert euthanasia, the victims of human traf-icking, new forms of slavery, and every form of

rejection.”3

Our approach to contemporary issues is irst and foremost rooted in our identity as followers of Christ and as brothers and sisters to all who are made in God’s image. For all Catholics, including those seeking public of ice, our participation in political parties or other groups to which we may belong should be in luenced by our faith, not the other way around.

Our 2015 statement, FormingConsciencesforFaithfulCitizenship, sought to help Catholics

form their consciences, apply a consistent moral framework to issues facing the nation and world, and shape their choices in elections in the light of Catholic Social Teaching. In choosing to re-issue this statement, we recognize that the thrust of the document and the challenges it addresses remain relevant today.

At the same time, some challenges have become even more pronounced. Pope Francis has contin-ued to draw attention to important issues such as migration, xenophobia, racism, abortion, global con lict, and care for creation. In the United States and around the world, many challenges demand our attention.

The threat of abortion remains our preeminent priority because it directly attacks life itself,4 because it takes place within the sanctuary of the family, and because of the number of lives destroyed. At the same time, we cannot dismiss or ignore other serious threats to human life and dignity such as racism, the environmental crisis, poverty and the death penalty.5

Our efforts to protect the unborn remain as important as ever, for just as the Supreme Court may allow greater latitude for state laws restricting abortion, state legislators have passed statutes not only keeping abortion legal through all nine months of pregnancy but opening the door to infanticide. Additionally, abortion contaminates many other important issues by being inserted into legislation regard-ing immigration, care for the poor, and health care reform.

At our border, many arriving families endure separation, inhumane treatment, and lack of due process, while those leeing persecution and violence face heightened barriers to seeking refuge and asylum. Within our borders, Dream-ers, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders, and mixed-status and undocumented families

PREPARING FOR ELECTION 2020 13

face continued fear and anxiety as political solutions fail to materialize. Lawmakers’ inability to pass comprehensive immigration reform which acknowledges the family as the basic unit of soci-ety has contributed to the deterioration of condi-tions at the border. As we seek solutions, we must ensure that we receive refugees, asylum seekers, and other migrants in light of the teachings of Christ and the Church while assuring the security of our citizens.

The wound of racism continues to fester; the bishops of the United States drew attention to this important topic in the recent pastoral letter, OpenWideOurHearts. Religious freedom prob-lems continue to intensify abroad and in the United States have moved beyond the federal to state and local levels. As international con licts proliferate, addressing poverty and building global peace remain pressing concerns, as does the need to assist persons and families in our own country who continue to struggle to make ends meet. We must work to address gun violence, xenophobia, capital punishment, and other issues that affect human life and dignity. It is also essen-tial to af irm the nature of the human person as male and female, to protect the family based on marriage between a man and a woman, and to uphold the rights of children in that regard. Finally, we must urgently ind ways to care better for God’s creation, especially those most impacted by climate change — the poor — and protect our common home. We must resist the throw-away culture and seek integral development for all.

With these and other serious challenges facing both the nation and the Church, we are called to walk with those who suffer and to work toward justice and healing.

At all levels of society, we are aware of a great need for leadership that models love for right-eousness (Wisdom 1:1) as well as the virtues of justice, prudence, courage, and temperance. Our commitment as people of faith to imitate Christ’s love and compassion should challenge us to serve as models of civil dialogue, especially in a context where discourse is eroding at all levels of society. Where we live, work, and worship, we strive to understand before seeking to be understood,

to treat with respect those with whom we disagree, to dismantle stereotypes, and to build productive conversation in place of vitriol.

Catholics from every walk of life can bring their faith and our consistent moral framework to contribute to important work in our communi-ties, nation, and world on an ongoing basis, not just during election season. In this coming year and beyond, we urge leaders and all Catholics to respond in prayer and action to the call to faith-ful citizenship. In doing so, we live out the call to holiness and work with Christ as he builds his kingdom of love.

MercifulFather,

Thank you for inviting each of us to join in your work of building the kingdom of love, justice, and peace.

Draw us close to you in prayer as we discern your call in our families and communities.

Send us forth to encounter all whom you love: those not yet born, those in poverty, those in need of welcome.

Inspire us to respond to the call to faithful citizenship, during election season and beyond.

Help us to imitate your charity and compassion and to serve as models of loving dialogue.

Teach us to treat others with respect, even when we disagree, and seek to share your love and mercy.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.

Amen

Guidelines on Political Activities for Parishes and Catholic Church Organizations

Formed in 1969 by the Roman Catholic Bishops of Illinois, the Catholic Conference of Illinois (CCI) is the agent through which the dioceses of Illinois (Belleville, Chicago, Joliet, Peoria, Rockford, and Springfield) may act mutually and coopera vely in ma ers of interdiocesan and state‐wide interest. CCI is a mul ‐issue public policy arm of the Church in Illinois.

Role of the Church in Poli cs

The Catholic Church, its parishes and Church organiza ons are prohibited by federal law from par cipa ng in par san poli cal ac vi es. The tax‐exempt status of a parish or Church organiza‐

on may be revoked if there is a viola on of the law, and other penal es and taxes may also be imposed on any funds spent on prohibited poli cal ac vi es.

However, the Church does have a role in poli cs and public policy forma on through ac vi es such as:

Educa ng Catholics and others on the teachings of the Church as they relate to social policies.

Analyzing and measuring policies against the values of the Gospel.

Speaking out on issues, such as those involving the life and dignity of the human person, social jus ce, the promo on of the common good, and the life of the Church in society.

Encouraging voters to par cipate fully in the poli cal process.

The following is a guide to some of the poli cal ac vi es in which parishes and Church organiza ons can and cannot be engaged, in compliance with applicable federal law. Please note that this is only a general guide to poli cal ac vi es and is not to be construed as legal advice. Par cular concerns or ques ons should be addressed with the Catholic Conference of Illinois.

Clearly Prohibited Ac vi es

Among the ac vi es that parishes and Church organiza ons are clearly prohibited from par cipa ng in include:

Endorsing a candidate or poli cal party.

Dona ng money or other resources to a candidate or poli cal party.

Exclusively offering the parish’s or Church organiza on’s facili es to a candidate or poli cal party.

Voter Registra on Drives

Nonpar san voter registra on and “Get out the vote” drives are permissible.

The event should not demonstrate a preference or bias toward a par cular candidate, poli cal party, or vo ng posi on.

No elec on campaign materials or other materials produced by candidates or poli cal par es are to be distributed, and the event should not be conducted in coopera on with any poli cal campaign or party.

The event should be open to everyone and not targeted to individuals known to support a par cular candidate.

Voter Educa on Materials

Only those voter educa on materials that come from or are approved by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, CCI or the local diocese may be published by or distributed in parishes, schools or other en es of the province.

For more detailed guidelines, go to http://www.usccb.org/about/general‐counsel/ political‐activity‐guidelines.cfm.

Issue Advocacy Campaigns

Issue advocacy campaigns can be conducted, including educa onal efforts about issues and legisla on and the encouragement of le er wri ng campaigns and other contacts with government officials, as long as the campaign is conducted in a nonpar san manner.

The posi on taken on an issue must be consistent with the Church’s posi on and Catholic Social Teaching.

When issue advocacy campaigns coincide with elec on campaigns, an individual candidate’s posi on on the issue should not be iden fied nor compared with the Church’s posi on on that issue.

CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING Catholic Social Teaching should be the framework from which issues in the poli cal arena are addressed. Catho‐lic Social Teaching includes the following major themes:

Life and Dignity of the Human Person

Protec on of and Par cipa on in the Family and the Community

Rights of the Human Person Protected and Each Person’s Responsibili es Met

Care for the Poor and Vulnerable

Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers

Solidarity as One Human Family

Care for God’s Crea on

Distribu on of Campaign Materials on the Property of a Parish or Church Organiza on

Parishes and Church organiza ons should avoid any par c‐ipa on in or authoriza on of the distribu on of campaign literature or biased voter educa on materials on their property. However, a parish or Church organiza on is not obligated to ac vely monitor and prevent campaign leafle ng of cars in its parking lot.

Poli cal signs should not be placed on property owned or rented for official business by a parish or Church organiza on.
