AttachedyouwillndmyproposalfortheDowntownFargonewbikeroutes
project.Thisproposalmainlyforcesonthenorthernareaandthemainavenueofthe
downtowndistrict.Minorchangesandconstructionwillbetakenplaceduringthisproj-
ect.
Ibelieveitwouldbeagreathelptocomeupwiththoughtfulbikeroutesdesigns
forthebikersdowntown.Mynewproposalcreatesmoretrafclanestobeusedonlyby
bikeswithinthedowntownarea.Thisinvolvesrepaintingtheexistingsignsforthecon-
structedbikelanes.Itwouldprovideaoverallbikewelcomeneighborhoodintheheart
ofthecityofFargo.
ThefollowingdocumentswillillustratemyplanningforthenewdowntownFargo
bikeroutes.AsanarchitecturestudentforNorthDakotaStateUniversity,Iwillusemy
pastexperienceandknowledgetodesignthisnewproject.Mypersonalresumeinthe
followingpagesmayhelpyoutoevaluatemyskills.
Inthisproposal,youwillndthedetailedscheduleandbudgetsaswell.Since
thisprojectdoesnotinvolvelargeconstruction,thebudgetwillbeaslowas$1,000.

ExecutiveSummary
IunderstandmanypeopleintheFargoareahavechangedtheirlifestylein
recentyears.Manypeoplechoosetobikequitefrequently,especiallyinthesummer
season.Asaresult,thecityofFargohasagrowingurgeforbetter-planedbikeroutes.
Sincethedowntowndistrictisoneofthedensestpopulatedareasofthecity,
manyactivitiesandvendorsdowntownencouragepeopletousebikesmoreinthis
area.AnewbikeroutesprojectforthedowntownFargoareaisverymuchinneed.My
newproposalfocusesonplanningmorebikelanesandlockerstobenetthepubic.
Thiswilllowertheriskforbothbikersandpedestriansonroadsandleadtoahealthier
wayofliving.
First,newprojectwillmainlytakeplaceontheroadswithoutbikelanes,and
thenwewillrepainttheexistingbikelanesignstomakeitmoreeasilydistinguishable
fromotherlanesonroads.Thelastpartofthisproposalistoaddmorepublicbike
lockerinthisarea.
Thebudgetofthisproposalwillbeaslowas$1,000intotal.Sincetheprojectconsistsofthreemainparts,thescheduledconstructionplanforthisproposalwilllast
uptothreeweeks.Eachweekwillbeusedtonishonepartofthisproject.

Statementofproblem
Asbikinghasbecomemoreandmorepopularforthelocalresidents,itisnot
surprisingtoseeanincreaseinbikersdowntown,especiallyinthesummerseason.
DespitethefactthatthecityofFargohasbeenbuiltmorebikelanesandbikefacility
forthedowntownarea,therestillremainssomeproblemsforthedowntownbikers.The
followingstatementpointsouttheunsolvedproblemsofdowntownbikeroutesand
providespossiblesolutiontothequestion.
Problems:
Firstofall,comparingtotheamountofpeoplethatbikeinthedowntownarea,
thenumberofbikelanesfoundinthesameareaiscertainlynotbigenoughtoconvey
thetrafcload.Thiswillresultinachaosconditionforthelocalroads.Althoughthecity
ofFargoallowsthebikerstosharesomewidesidewalks(equalorwiderthan4)with
thepedestrians,underthiscircumstancebikershavetosharesidewalkswiththepe-
destrianinsomeverynarrowroadsaswell(g.1).Thispotentiallyincreasestherisksforboththepedestrianandthebikers.Secondly,manyoftheexistingbikelanesare
notbeingusedasexpected(g.2).Inmostcases,theindicationofthebikelaneis
simplyapaintedsignontheroad(g.3).AssomebikersinFargoareusedtosharing

forbikes.Itwillnothelpthecurrentbikingsituationifthebikerscannotndthebike
lanes.Thisisawastefortheexistingresource.Lastpoint,sincethedowntownarea
providesabroadselectionforrestaurantsandvendors,itisreasonableforbikersto
stopfrequently.However,thereseemstonotbeenoughpublicbikelockerswithinthe
area.Manypeoplechoosetolockertheirbikestoastreetlights.Thisnotonlyhurtsthe
citysimagebutalsoblocksthepassingpedestrians.
Solution:
Totheveryrstexistingproblem,thesimplesolutionistoconstructedmorebike
lanesinthedowntownarea.Inthisproject,NPand1stavenuewilladdanindividual
bikelaneontheroad.Forsomeofthenishedbikelanes,solidlineswillbepainted
todistinguishtheareathatisonlyforbikesontheroads.Asuccessfulexampleforthe
projectcouldbefoundfrom4thstreettothenorthsideofMainAvenue(g.4).This
stepinvolveswithRobertsStreetandBoardWay.Tosolvethenalproblemmypro-
posalwilladdseveralmorepubicbikelockersinvariouslocations.Inthisproposal,the
biggestpublicbikelockerwillbeinstalledatthewestsideofthecityscapesandtwo
smallbikelockerswillbelocatedonBroadway(g.5).
