Welcome to the 14th Annual Kelly Country Pick.
It is that time again—when banjos, fiddles, mandolins and all the other associ-ated string instruments invade Beechworth for another fabulous weekend of Bluegrass, Old Timey (and a dash of Cajun) music. A time where enthusiasts for these musical styles come from all over the country to share and showcase their skills and talents in this historic town; where old friends and new can gather together and enjoy their time ‘picking’ and jamming; wine-ing (not whining) and dining and watching a smorgasboard of concerts. This year we are excited to have 8 new bands attending the ’Pick’ for the first time—from all over the country, so lots of new musical collaborations for you to investigate. It is a healthy sign for the future! We also have some new workshop ideas—in particular, the opportunity to try a new instrument! Every wanted to draw a fiddle bow over the strings or get a chance to try a dobro, or pluck on a double bass? Now is your chance, and there are enthusiastic people on hand to instruct and encourage you. It is never too late to learn to play a musical instru-ment and participate in the joy and camaraderie of making music with others. We’re trying a few new things on the concert stages too—ideas picked up from our time in Asheville, Nth Carolina last year. The fabulous on-stage Old Timey sessions and Bluegrass jams were highlights of our trip and I’m hoping we can re-create something along those lines here. We apologise to those who are disappointed that we did not run a music camp this year. The last 2 years of music camps was a fabulous formative experience. We are extremely gratified by the positive feedback and to see the continued mu-sical development, enthusiasm (and friendships) of the participants. But this year, I’m just looking forward to having more energy to enjoy and participate in the festival weekend! To the volunteers who make the festival run…. we could not do it without you. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and continued support! Special thanks to Bec Humphreys for helping with local advertising yet again! As always, we’d like to thank our sponsors around the town for their generous support – Pam and the staff at The Old Priory, The Indigo Shire, The Hibernian Hotel, The Nicholas Hotel, the Beechworth Brewery, Carriage Motor Inn—we could not have developed the festival to this point without you! 24 hours in a day is just not enough time on a weekend like this. Don’t waste a minute of it! Wendy Jackson
