We are working hard to improve bicycling conditions in Washington, DC and maintain our reputation as one of the most bike-friendly cities in the country. We have more than 100 miles of bike lanes and trails; Capital Bikeshare is the country’s most established and well-regarded bikesharing systems; we are continuing to build and improve major trails along the Anacostia River, Oxon Run, Rock Creek and Metropolitan Branch corridor; we install hundreds of bicycle parking racks throughout the district every year; and we teach bicycle safety to thousands of adults and children.

BIKE THEFT PREVENTION
Most bike thefts are due to unlocked or improperly locked bikes. Following these tips will help prevent your bike from being stolen.
» NEVER leave your bike unlocked–not even for a second.
» ALWAYS use a high-quality U-lock or chain. For added security, use both.
» Always lock the frame and front wheel to either a rack or pole (see illustration 1).
» For extra security, remove the front wheel and lock it with the frame and rear wheel (see illustration 2).

RIDE IN A STRAIGHT LINE.Avoid weaving between parked cars.
RIDING ON THE SIDEWALK.Riding on sidewalks is permissible, except in the downtown central business district (see above for no riding on sidewalk zone).
USE ENTIRE TRAVEL LANE.Move toward the center when the lane is too narrow for motorists to pass safely or when you’re moving at the same speed as traffic.
THE DOOR ZONEis the 4-foot area along the side of a parked car where an opening door can hit and seriously injure a person riding a bike.
GREEN LANESDDOT has painted many bike lanes green in “conflict zones” to improve visibility of both the bike lanes and cyclists.
WATCH BEHIND YOU.Keep track of traffic behind you, so you’ll know whether you have enough room if you must swerve suddenly out of the door zone. A mirror helps you see traffic behind you as you pedal forward.
When riding in a bike lane, ride on the left side of the lane–at least 4 feet from parked cars.
NEVER RIDE AGAINST TRAFFIC.People walking and driving are not looking for people riding the wrong way down a street.
OBEY ALL TRAFFIC REGULATIONS.Riding predictably and following the law are the keys to safe bicycling.
DON’T STOP IN CROSSWALKS.
SHARING THE TRAILWashington, DC has over 60 miles of trails along some of the most picturesque scenery in the city. Trails are a great place for new bicyclists to practice their skills (shifting, signaling, scanning).

Contraflow bile lanes allow two-way bicycle traffic on low-volume one way streets by affording riders a separate space to ride against the flow of motor vehicle traffic. The contraflow lane is separated by a double yellow line, while shared lane markers alert drivers to the presence of bicyclists traveling in the same direction as motor vehicle traffic. Bicyclists should be aware of drivers crossing the contraflow lane to park.

Neighborhood Bikeways are streets optimized for biking and walking. They make it easier to walk and bike on residential streets by slowing down motor vehicle traffic with traffic circles, bump outs and other traffic calming devices.

Exclusive facilities for people on bikes that are located within or directly adjacent to the roadway and that are physically separated from motor vehicle traffic. Barrier protected bike lanes physically separate people on bikes from motor vehicle traffic through the use of vertical elements such as on-street parking, bollards, and/or raised curbs.

DOCKLESS BIKESHAREDockless bikeshare systems are a new option to access bikes on the go that do not require docking. Dockless bikes can be conveniently accessed using each dockless bikeshare company’s mobile app or website. When parking dockless bicycles be sure to maintain 5 ft. of pedestrian travel space without blocking access to private properties or driveways.

Capital Bikeshare is a transportation system designed to get you from point A to point B, similar to a bus or a train. join Capital Bikeshare by choosing a membership, take a bike from one of
hundreds of stations, ride to your destination, and return your bike to any station. Repeat as many times as you would like throughout
your membership period.
Inform the bus driver that you are going to load your bicycle and then proceed to the foldable rack on the front of the bus.
2 Grasp the handle at the top of the rack, squeeze and pull it down until it clicks.
3 Lift the bicycle onto the rack, placing it into one of the slots. There is a spring-loaded support arm attached to each bike space.
4 Place the front wheel of the bicycle pointing toward the support arm and pull the bar up and over the front tire. As you ride comfortably on the bus to your next stop, do not forget that your bike is hanging out on the front of the bus, comfortably enjoying the ride.
5 As you exit, again let the driver know that you will be removing your bicycle from the rack. Lower the support arm and raise the bicycle rack back up to the front of the bus.

BIKE ON BUSLOAD YOUR BIKE ON THE BUS IN 5 EASY STEPS
All buses have a sturdy bike rack attached to the front of the bus with a locking mechanism for extra security. The racks hold up to two bicycles, which you can load in just 5 easy steps:
METRORAIL Bicycles are welcome (limited to two per car) on weekdays except 7am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm. Bicycles are welcome all day Saturday as well as most holidays (limited to 4 per car). Bicycles are not permitted on July 4 and other special events or holidays when large crowds use the system. WMATA offers bike lockers at select locations.
BIKE PARKING Many Metrorail stations have bicycle parking facilities, including racks and lockers. Call 202.962.1116 to rent a locker.
BIKE ON BUS Most buses in the DC region have bike racks on the front of the bus that carry up to two bicycles.
BIKE ON TRAIN Bicycles are welcome on Amtrack, MARC and VRE trains, check with authorities prior to boarding.
