In 2010 Department of Primary Industries at Horsham conducted a trial with alternative fertilisers.

The trial was on Flagship barley and included five treatments across two soil types plus a control. The fertiliser treatments included a farmer rate, two other biological recommendations, LawrieCo and conventional fertiliser recommendations.

Results: The yield on the LawrieCo treatment averaged the second highest (3.01 t/ha) behind another Biological A treatment (3.10t/ha) and was followed by the conventional (2.71t/ha). See yield graph above.

Economics: the cost of LawrieCo inputs were $63.22/ha, compared to $117.67/ha cost of Biological A treatment and $86.64/ha for the conventional.

The DPI work out a dollar gained for dollar spent equation, in which the LawrieCo treatment was $4.14. This gain was $1.72 higher per dollar spent than any of the other treatments (see cost table above).

David Hammond: Kotta, Victoria

After the 2010 season David had a 10 t/ha wheat stubble to work with before he could get his crop in for 2011. The stubble was also a lot heavier in some areas of the 55 hectares and his preference was to manage the stubble without burning.

In February David applied brewed Digest Fungi and Kicker to the wheat stubbles (at rates for high stubble load – 30 L/ha). The stubble was then lightly incorporated with a Lely Multidisc as this was the machine David had available (ideally use a roller or prickle chain). It wasn’t possible to get on the paddock any earlier with the wet conditions of 2010.

The result was fantastic with stubble becoming brittle, the work of the Digest Fungi allowed David to sow the 2011 lupins in mid May and wheat crop in June with no issues at all using a very old Shearer disc drill. David had been sceptical that his seeder would handle what looked like a very big stubble load but although the shell of the straw was still present it was so brittle that it fed through the drill with no trouble at all. Not to mention all the other benefits that go with introducing Digest Fungi: reduced trash that can harbour disease, extra plant available nitrogen, increasing humus/ carbon production and more…

The photo speaks for itself!

Since then, David has invested in his own on-farm Microbe Pump and brewing setup and is currently applying LawrieCo foliar sprays to his crop.

Graham Nicolson and his brother Peter crop three different properties in the mid north of South Australia. Using biological methods since 2002 similar outcomes have been seen on the range of soil types, most obviously Graham has noticed improved soil structure, with compaction no longer an issue.

Additionally Graham recently revisited his long term yield data (since 1984) and he has seen an upward trend in average yields since working with biological methods with the same or reduced input costs.

When compared to the previous 18 years, the cereal yield average since 2002 has increased by 0.09-0.11t/ha each season. Taking an average cereal price of $200/t, this represents an increase in income of between $18-22/ha each year. It is also important to note that a number of drought and dry years occurred between 2004 and 2009. Also of note in recent years legume yield was significantly higher than any prior legume yield since 1984.

Adding to the yield benefit is the reduced fertiliser use (from prior application of 18:20 at 100kg/ha down to 30-40kg/ha) and increased soil health and fertility for long term sustainability.

Since 2002 Graham has included BioLogic Blend into his conventional budget by rotating around the farms, applying to a few paddocks each year. More recently Graham has applied SureCrop VAM seed dressing, some foliar sprays and used the Digest Fungi program to improve stubble handling at seeding time (more detail can be found in Summer 2010/11 Sustainable Update, pg 4-5).

We would like to thank Graham and Peter for recognising the importance of record making and for allowing LawrieCo to share this long term farm information with others interested in biological farming and it’s benefits.

LawrieCo have set up a long term biological trial in the mid north of SA. Jamie Ball, LawrieCo’s new agronomist for northern SA, with the assistance of valued clients Jeff & Kay Kernchen of Tothill Belt, have recently established a 17 Ha site. The trial will assess the true value of Soluble Humates and SureCrop VAM and potentially a number of foliar treatments across a full crop rotational sequence stretching 5 years.

The trial has been sown using a double skip row methodology (see Figure 1 below) and data will be collected pertaining to sowing rate, emergence, crop density, tillering and yield.

Replicates have been established over three soil types including Heavy Black Self Mulching, Red Brown and Silty Sand soil types. Data we collect will be analysed statistically and replicates will allow assessment of soil type interactions.

We will keep you posted!

For more information please contact Jamie Ball.

New Faces in the FieldJamie Ball and Peter Davidson are new faces you will see out in

the field in SA. Please feel free to call them to discuss biological fertiliser options or arrange an on-farm visit.

Jamie Ball – Agronomist, North SA

Jamie comes to LawrieCo with 21 years of experience working within Agriculture, having grown up in both Australia and the United States.

Following completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Science & Economics from the University of Adelaide, Jamie spent 5 years as an Agricultural Development Consultant in Africa and Asia. Moving to the Mid North of South Australia, Jamie initially spent 4 years with a large SA Agri-Merchant and over the last 14 years he has owned and operated an Independent Consultancy Practice providing Agronomic, Soil Management and Business\Financial Advice to 70 Farms throughout SA and Vic.

An awareness of factors limiting crop production and profitability in Australia has led Jamie to the conclusion that better understanding of soil, physics and biology and of plant-soil interrelationships is a key factor to ensuring long term productivity and to farm income improvement. Jamie comes to LawrieCo with the objective of assisting Australian farmers to achieve a Biologically driven, sustainable leap in output and efficiency.

Peter Davidson – Field Consultant, Central & South SA

Peter Davidson joined LawrieCo in late May and is enjoying the challenge of interacting with our many regional clients. It is a steep learning curve but the whole team has been very welcoming and helpful which has made the transition from farming to consultancy work a lot easier.

Peter grew up in Keith in the upper South East of South Australia on a livestock and cropping family farm. After finishing school he began work at Elders before returning to the family farm. The farm mainly consisted of sheep, cattle and cropping (cereals, pulses and lucerne).

Following the family farm being sold in 2009, Peter was looking for a new challenge and different opportunities, but still wanting to be a part of the agriculture industry. LawrieCo fitted perfectly, a small but growing family business with clear ideals and objectives. Peter believes biological farming is the pathway to a sustainable and profitable agricultural industry, which is essential for the individual and the environment.

Peter is currently based at Hindmarsh Valley on the Fleurieu Peninsula and will cover that area and also help Ryan Walker with the South East of SA.

Recent crop walks in the Mid North and Yorke Peninsula showed excellent root growth development with crops that had been planted using LawrieCo’s seeding program.

True Colour of FulvicThe colour of fulvic products has created some confusion recently,

with an assumption being made that the darker colour is of a higher quality, when actually it is the opposite.

LawrieCo are happy to provide our clients with a high quality fulvic product sourced and manufactured right here in Australia. Below is an explanation of fulvic acid properties and how the colour of the product can indicate the quality – lighter is better.

The Basics

Humic substances are major components of natural organic matter found in soil water and organic deposits. There are 3 main molecules of humic substances which can be separated by their chemical properties. Fulvic acid is soluble in water at any pH, humic acid is soluble in water in alkaline conditions and humin is insoluble in water in either acid or alkaline conditions.

Fulvic acid is the smaller of the humic substance. The molecules of fulvic acid have a lower content of carbon and a higher content of oxygen, which is why the fulvic molecules are more biologically/ chemically active, hence the high cation exchange capacity of fulvic.

Opposite is a chart showing the pigmentation of humic substances; the fulvic fraction ranges from a light yellow to a yellow brown. This results in a strong solution of fulvic being an opaque yellow to orange brown in colour.

Extraction of Fulvic

There are a number of products on the market that create confusion as to the concentration and purity of fulvic acid contained in liquid fulvic products. This is because they not only contain fulvic acid but also contain fractions of humic acid. Humic acid gives a dark brown to black colour which can be seen in a number of products.

Without testing them accurately the best estimation is that the fulvic acid concentration quoted is a combination of what would be academically defined as fulvic acid and humic acid. This is done through an organic acid extraction that uses a less acidic or slightly alkaline solution. This can easily be seen with fulvic acid powder extractions which are usually a dark brown colour.

LawrieCo’s fulvic acid extraction is performed at a significantly lower pH to completely precipitate all of what is defined as humic acid, with humin removed prior to this extraction. Once separated it is fine filtered to ensure that all humic acid is retained and separated.

Thus the humic substances contained in the final product of fulvic acid are only the low molecular weight academically defined fulvic acid molecules. Consequently the solution is a much lighter colour and opaque in visual appearance.

The methodology followed in the manufacture of Lawrie Co fulvic acid means that the product contains only the highest purity of fulvic molecules giving a more bioactive product free from the contamination of less bioactive humic substances.
