    Current Status

S-63 Edition 1.0 stable and being used by

    multiple data servers

Edition 11. being rolled out and used by

type approval authorities for new ECDIS

    Supported by clear documentation and

    comprehensive test dataset

Much experience now within data servers

in dealing with issues surrounding S-63

    S-101 structure

    Better defined structure Emphasises interoperability

Data structure resembles iso19xxx series of standards

UML descriptions for all essential structures

Separation of carrier from content Allows for multiple encodings Example encoding included with S-101 specification

    Identifies the data

Dynamic registries Dynamic registry for objects / attributes

S-63 areas No defined compression, encryption or authentication

Basic integrity check could be at object level as well as celllevel.

    S-63 areas for improvment

Dataset size Currently 9 CDs (UKHO)

Considerable redundancy (~50%) in binary encoding

Large number of intermediate directories ~40,000

    Differing implementations

Different implementations/sources of metadata Cell boundaries

    Edition numbers

    Catalog.031

    Auxiliary files

    Products.txt

Different behaviour wrt multiple data server environment - certificates

Loading times Related to dataset size and underlying data structure

Are there ways S-63s provisions could speed up data loadingcompared to other formats?

No specific provisions for online distribution of data

    Other considerations

Encoding SENC currently fragmented and not universally accepted

Better formats may exist offering benefits to mariners

    Data Distribution Models

Many different distribution models exist Desire to create Value Added Services exists in the market

    Need to encompass other formats

Other aspects are important, e.g IMO number reporting, manufacturer id/model capturing

Data integrity improvements Current integrity measures only exist at cell - file level which

    imposes restrictions on distribution models

We need to span move to online distribution within S-101

    S-63 opportunities Re-use S-63 ed 1.* structures

Some structures clearly work, permits, compression Some could be improved, certificate implementation, metadata

Define better encodings We are not bound to using the underlying 8211 encoding as a base

Can reuse cell encoding for file based transfer

Can define online transfer encoding of objects and attributes

Can tailor encoding(s) to OEM-like structures

    Structure metadata Consolidate existing structures catalog.031, products.txt, media.txt, serial.enc,

    status.lst etc

    Better define service

Reduce size of dataset Better compression key to online takeup

Proliferation of vessel broadband will remain slow globally Implement expandable standards

    Can allow for multiple encodings

Standard requirements must be in place to allow hydrographic officerequirements of data integrity and copy protection
