Other Smart Grid Pilot Projects in India Smart Grid Research Laboratory, CPRI, Bengaluru, India

The “Smart Grid Research Laboratory” project has been approved by Ministry of

Power. The aim of this project is to establish Smart Grid Research Laboratory comprising of

Smart Grid Technology Centre (SGTC) and Interoperability Laboratory (Interop Lab). Some

of the existing smart grid facilities of CPRI cover evaluation of a few of the smart Grid

Components like Intelligent Electronic Device (IED), Smart Meter etc. in isolation, but

facilities for evaluation of interoperability among different makes and its behavioral aspects

study in the integrated environment are not available. Establishment of Smart Grid Research

Laboratory which comprises of Interop test facility aims to fill this gap of Interoperability

evaluation which is one of the important aspects in the Smart Grid technology deployment.

Renewable energy integration and communication system are other major aspects of Smart

Grid and the Smart Grid Technology Centre will facilitate the advanced research, evaluation

and capacity building for utility engineers and academicians.

The outlay of the project is Rs. 11.05 Crores. The project implementation also

derives inputs from the USTDA sponsored consultancy project on „Smart Grid Test Bed‟ and

specifically for most of equipment specifications for procurement and building layout design.

Other Smart Grid Pilot Projects in India

AMI Project, TATA Powers Mumbai

The project includes deployment of Advanced Metering Infrastructure. The

consortium members include L&T, Cyan and Neosilica. Wireless technology from Cyan, and

Neosilica will provide a Meter Data Acquisition System interface from Cyan's Head End

Server into Tata's Meter Data Management System for billing and fault management. The first

phase of the project covers 5,000 smart meters.

Smart Grid Pilot project for Indiranagar, Bangalore by

BESCOM

Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM), is implementing a

Smart Grid Pilot Project for Indiranagar, Bangalore, with a consumer base of 63,058. It

includes 3 components - Advance Metering Infrastructure; Peak Load Management and Solar

Rooftop PV Systems (RTPV). Under this project, Smart Meters and Communication Systems

will be installed for about 20,000 consumers. IT Infrastructure consisting of servers, MDAS,

MDAM and PLM software etc. will be installed in the control centre for data collection,

storage and analysis. Around 5,000 Rooftop Systems are planned to be installed in Indiranagar

and will be integrated with the distribution system using Net Metering.

Other Smart Grid Pilot Projects in India Odisha Smart Grid projects

The Odisha government has announced a Smart Grid power network (Disaster

Resilient Power Strengthening System), for the cyclone prone Ganjam district in Orissa,

with 60% funding from ADB. This project involves implementation of the latest

technology in the power supply system and enables it to withstand very high-speed

cyclones, with wind speed of upto 350-kmph. Under the scheme, the power supply would

be made through underground and over ground cables and gas insulated sub-stations with

full automation and control. Consumers would be alerted of power cuts through SMS etc.

The project is divided into 2 packages: Package-I deals with 132 kV Sub-Station works

and Pckage-II deals with 33 kV Sub-Station works, 11kV and LT Network works.

Chhatrapur Smart Grid Pilot Project

A Smart Grid pilot project covering 5800+ consumers is being taken up with

State Government funding at Chhatrapur in Odisha. The DPR for the project has been

prepared.

Other Smart Grid Pilot Projects in India

Battery Energy Storage demonstration projects

Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) has floated a tender for 3

demonstration projects on grid connected battery energy storage. The technologies

specified are: (i) Lithium Iron Batteries, (ii) Advanced Lead Acid Batteries, and (iii) Flow

Batteries or Sodium Sulphur Batteries. The capacity envisaged is 500kW & 250 kWH.

Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation Limited (CESC)

A Smart Grid Roadmap for the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation Limited

(CESC) is being prepared by Tetra Tech and ESTA International, Inc under a USTDA

grant. The CESC made recommendations for further reliability and power quality

improvements, SCADA/DMS/EMS enhancements, communications infrastructure for

AMI and Distribution Automation, smart metering and AMI, Enterprise Application

Integration and a Pilot Project.
