AbstractBackground:In coal fired power plants fouling is estimated to be an important source of losses of availability. It disturbs the thermalefficiency of heat exchangers thereby increasing the operational cost. Objective:The Objective is to analyse the effect of fouling in economiser. Methods:The economiser is modelled by considering the system variables as lumped parameters. The variables in the model areassumed to satisfy the basic physical thermodynamics balance equations .Hence the governing equations of the economisersystem are obtained by considering the heat transfer associated with the system as two separate blocks viz. the gas to metalheat transfer block and the metal to fluid heat transfer block. The model is simulated on basis of data collected from powerplant. Results:Impact of fouling on economiser (counter flow heat exchanger) is analysed at steady state operating conditions. Fouling issimulated by decrease in heat radiation absorbed by economiser. Decrease in heat radiation influences a decrease ineconomiser metal tube temperature and hence outlet water temperature. The overall heat transfer coefficient is calculated bymeans of log mean temperature difference approach which also decreases with this effect. It is also observed that there isdecrease in efficiency by 1% for every 10% decrease in heat absorbed by economiser. Conclusions:The effect of fouling on economiser efficiency and over all heat transfer coefficient is analysed. As extension of future workheat exchanger transients due to upsets in flue gas flow or temperature, feed water flow will be incorporated.

Reduced order model based control schemes applied to multivariable non-linear processesAnuj Abraham1, N.Pappa2

1Research scholar, 2Associate Professor, Department of Instrumentation Engineering, MIT Campus, Anna University, Chennai

AbstractBackground:Modeling and control of binary and multi component mixtures involves fast and accurate design for distillation columns.Getting an accurate and reliable measurement at the distillation column is challenging and depends on the factors like non-stationary dynamic mathematical models due to their time dependency, process nonlinearity, multivariable coupling, severedisturbances, etc. Objective:The objective of this work aims to develop an efficient model predictive control strategy that can be applied to complexmultivariable processes. A novel hybrid method for reduced order generalized predictive algorithm is proposed for onlineapplications with reduction in complexity and time elapsed.Method:Fundamental dynamic models of distillation columns are not well suited for incorporation into model predictive controlschemes due to their high state dimension and computational complexity. Hence, a reduced order model is developed with anew proposed hybrid algorithm known as Clustering Dominant Pole Algorithm (CDPA) and is able to compute the full setof dominant poles and their cluster center efficiently. Then, the predictive controller based on CARIMA model calculatesthe optimal control action based on the future reference signals, current state, constraints on manipulated and controlledvariables. Results:The efficacy of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated with the help of simulated complex non-linear multivariabledistillation column processes to assess the relative tradeoffs between prediction accuracy and time elapsed. The resultsshows better responses than conventional techniques in terms of error minimization. Conclusion:The utility of reduced order modeling technique for model predictive control of high purity distillation columns isinvestigated.

1Research scholar, 2Associate Professor, Department of Instrumentation Engineering, MIT Campus, Anna University, Chennai

AbstractBackground:Among all the available technologies for Wind Energy Conversion Systems, the DFIG is most accepted for its reducedconverter ratings and variable speed operation. The renewable source of power generation system output is unregulated andincludes more noise at inverter output. Objective:It is important to ensure the quality of the electric power which is obtained by controlling the conduction pulses to the gatesof converter and inverter for regulating output voltage.Method:Neuro fuzzy based controlling technique with estimation of 3 different rates such as, Rate of Carrier Frequency level , PulsePosition and Ratio of Duty Cycle, decides the pulse frequency to conduct the switching device which will regulate andboost up voltage at load side. Then with the help of enhanced SVPWM with Neuro Fuzzy technique in converter andinverter design, conduction period is verified and controlled to present regulated power supply to load connected to the Gridsystem to provide regulated power output.Result:The modified SVPWM has the transfer function for upholding reduced levels of ripples in the inverter switching circuit.High speed switching activities are provided to IGBT. Thus, results in a low error rate and regulated power at load side. Conclusion:The generator speed is controlled for maintaining the voltage regulation at load side. The performance analysis exhibitbetter result in terms of dynamic voltage variation and output voltage level at load side.

1Jerusalem college of Engineering Chennai, India2Department of Instrumentation Engg., MIT Campus, Anna University, Chennai, India

AbstractBackground:Respiratory infections are ranked as the greatest single contributor to the overall burden of disease in the world. Chronicobstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide and the numbers are still growing. Objective:To improve respiratory health through prevention and early detection to decrease morbidity and mortality.

Methods:In this work, selection of significant parameters of spirometric data is carried out using Relief-F feature selection algorithmand validated using Multi-class Support Vector Machines (MSVM). Spirometric pulmonary function data are obtained fromnormal, restrictive and obstructive subjects (N=150) using gold standard Spirolab II spirometer. The spirometric data aresubjected to Relief-F algorithm to identify significant features of the datasets and to obtain relevant feature set. Further themost significant features are then used to train (N=90) as well as to test (N=60) Multi-class SVM to categorize among theabnormalities. Results:It is observed from results that the features FEV1, PEF and FEF25-75% obtained by Relief-F algorithm are found to be moresignificant in differentiating normal, restrictive and obstructive subjects. Results also demonstrate that the selectedsignificant features are capable to obtain an improved average accuracy of 87.77% for MSVM.Conclusions:This mode of incorporated assessment is useful in the study of pulmonary function dynamics in a better way. Thus instancebased method of feature selection and MSVM based classification could be useful in assessing the pulmonary functiondisorders, for spirometric pulmonary function test with large dataset.

Modeling and Control of Fed-Batch BioreactorM.Chitra1, N.Pappa2

Abstract

Background:Bioprocess technology is currently employed for the production of fine chemicals. Because of the complex nature ofmicroorganisms and product formation, the control of bioreactors continues to be a challenging task. The biggest problem inthe instrumentation of a bioprocess is that, there are no suitable sensors for on-line measurements of many importantprocess parameters. For example, reliable measurement of the biomass. Data acquisition of key fermentation variables isdifficult due to the lack of reliable sensors for on-line measurements of biomass, substrate, and product concentrations.Though large number of estimation techniques are mentioned in literature, most of these methods have not been used in realproduction environments creating a challenge to find a suitable method for the process. From different modes of operation, (batch, fed-batch and continuous), fed-batch operation is often used in industry due toits ability to overcome catabolite repression or glucose effect which usually occur during production of fine chemicals. Moreover, fed-batch operation also gives the operator of freedom of manipulating the process via substrate feed rate. Theproblem is to determine optimal feed rate profiles, such that the final product is maximized. Objective:To find a suitable modeling approach for fed-batch process with the aim of achieving uniform operation and optimalproductivity and to develop soft sensors for the estimation of important variables such as biomass concentration, dissolvedoxygen, etc., based on available measurements. Also, to develop a suitable control scheme based on soft sensor output fordeveloping an optimization procedure to determine the optimal substrate feed profile for maximizing the yield and toexperiment it practically.

1Research scholar, 2Professor, Department of Instrumentation Engineering, MIT Campus, Anna University, Chennai

AbstractBackground:The control of BLDC motor was carried out by considering only the speed as the varying parameter and the position of the

motor is sensed by using Hall sensor. Embedding the Hall sensor into the stator is a complex process and involves highimplementation cost. Objective:The proposed work aims at modeling and control of BLDC motor using Soft Computing Techniques to improve theperformance of Brushless DC Motor. Methods:The modeling and sensorless speed control of BLDC motor will be carried out using advanced AI based control schemes. The performance of the conventional and advanced scheme will be compared and analyzed qualitatively as well asquantitatively. Results:Investigation of the modeling and control of brushless DC motor using advanced soft computing techniques for the torqueoptimization, minimization of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and cost will be considered as varying parameters. Conclusion:A systematic approach for the modeling and control of Brushless DC Motor using soft Computing Techniques is proposed. The drawback of speed control of BLDC motor using Hall sensor can be overcome by using sensorless speed control ofBLDC motor.

Modeling and control of milk pasteurization processM. Kayalvizhi1, D.Manamalli2

1Research scholar, 2Associate Professor, Department of Instrumentation Engineering, MIT Campus, Anna University, Chennai

AbstractBackground:

Pasteurization process inactivates the bacteria and increases the shelf life of the milk. Some spores may survive thethermal process. Hence milk temperature should be reduced to less than 10⁰ C immediately after heating. The milkpasteurization is a multivariable interacting process which makes the control of pasteurization process a complex one. Objective:

Hence in order to control the process precisely, a complete or accurate dynamic model of Pasteurization processneeds to be developed. The objective of the proposed work is to design and implement conventional and advanced controlschemes on the simulated model of the Pasteurization process. Results:In the model of the milk pasteurization plant, the speed of the compressor is kept at 0.39 times the rated Ns to obtain themilk temperature at the outlet of cooling stage around 4°C. In the proposed model, when the speed of the compressor is keptat 0.594 times Ns, the milk temperature at the outlet of cooling stage is around 4°C. Thus the maintenance of milktemperature at the desired value is possible even after the elimination of pre-cooling stage and the cooling tower. Conclusions:The first principle model of the milk pasteurization process and also the modified model is developed and simulated inSimulink platform. The cascade control scheme is designed and implemented in the original model and also the modifiedmodel of the plant in order to maintain the temperature of milk at the outlet of the heating and cooling stage as well. Theclosed loop response shows that the controller performs well with very less overshoot and oscillations.

SDSA: Sponge based Digital Signature Algorithm for Elliptic Curve CryptographyM. Lavanya1, V. Natarajan1

1Research scholar, Professor, Department of Instrumentation Engineering, MIT Campus, Anna University, Chennai

AbstractBackground:Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) is a public key cryptographic technique. In ECC, the encryption and decryption aredone in finite field, either in prime mode or in binary mode. Elliptic curves find applications in resource constrainedenvironments like wireless sensor networks, RFID etc., as it require smaller key sizes for encryption and decryption. Objective:To design an efficient Authentication algorithm using ECC for resource constrained environments. Methods:The Digital signature Algorithm used in ECC i.e., Elliptic curve digital signature algorithm (ECDSA) uses SHA-1 as thealgorithm to generate the hash code. In this paper, it is proposed a technique which uses a Sponge based one way hashfunction with Modified BLAKE2b as the compression function to generate the hash code and to sign the message with thenewly generated hash code. Results:This approach reduces the bytes per cycle time (Computation time) of the algorithm used to generate the hash code forauthentication. If the bytes/cycle time is reduced, then the energy consumption will also be reduced when this new methodis used in resource constrained environments. Conclusions:Elliptic curve cryptography has relatively small key size compared with other asymmetric key algorithms. This reduced keylength results in smaller hardware area, shorter running time and saves energy. The usage of cryptographic sponge functionwith ECDSA provides an added advantage for applications in resource constrained environments.

Control system design for energy efficient on-target product purity operation of adistillation column

P.Manikandan1, D.Manamalli2

1Research scholar, 2Associate Professor, Department of Instrumentation Engineering, MIT Campus, Anna University, Chennai

AbstractBackground:In the chemical process industry, distillation column is a very common and energy intensive unit. The Product quality, energy usage and plant throughput of such columns depends on the effectiveness of the control schemes applied to thecolumn and on the conditions under which the columns are operated. Objective:The objective is to minimize the energy usage within the purity specification. Methods:Quality and profit are depending on the variance associated with the controlled variable. Poor control means largevariability so the process must be operated in a less profitable region. Tight control permits operation near the constraintwhich means more profit. Saving the potential energy and maintaining the purity of the product will be carried out usingadvanced control Schemes. The work will be carried out as follows:1. Distillation column model is developed.2. Two-layered (Supervisory-Regulatory) dynamic economic optimization and control will be investigated for distillationcolumn to minimize the energy. Results:

The steady-state behavior of distillation Column is studied. Sensitivity analysis methodology can be used in conjunctionwith SVD is helpful in determining tray sensor location. Conclusions:A good trade-off between energy cost and product recovery. Energy requirements are minimized to produce a certainamount of distillate to meet a specified concentration of the most volatile key component.

Segmentation of short axis cardiac MRI images using clusteringA.V.Nageswararao1, S.Srinivasan2

1Research scholar, 2Associate Professor, Department of Instrumentation Engineering, MIT Campus, Anna University, Chennai

AbstractBackgro und :According to estimates from the American Heart Association, each year 17 million people die of cardiovascular disease(CVD). Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a highly advanced and sophisticated imaging modality for cardiac motiontracking and analysis. Cardiac MRI is the referenced examination for cardiac morphology function and perfusion inhumans. Ventricular analysis which gives size and function of ventricles is done manually in clinical practice. As there areso many limitations of manual segmentation, there is a need for the development of automated segmentation methods. Objective:The main objective of this work is to develop a hybrid segmentation method for the automatic segmentation of both left andright ventricles from short axis cardiac MRI images. Methods:The proposed method is a combination of Fast Adaptive K-means Clustering with Distance Regularized Level SetEvolution (DRLSE).Results:Initially a comparative analysis of K-means, Moving K-means, Adaptive K-means, Fast Adaptive K-means, Fuzzy c-meansand Spatial Fuzzy c-means clustering techniques for the segmentation of short axis cardiac MRI images has been done.Clustered output is used as the initialization for localization of the object of interest i.e. ventricles in case of ventricularsegmentation of cardiac MRI images. The Clustered output is applied to DRLSE which gives the accurate delineation ofboth the left and right ventricles. Conclusions:The hybrid method of Fast Adaptive K-means and DRLSE gives better results when compared to the other methods.

A MRAC-PI Controller for an Activated Sludge ProcessS.Saravana Kumar1, K.Latha2

1Research Scholar, 2Associate Professor, Department of Instrumentation Eng., MIT Campus, Anna University, Chennai

AbstractBackground:The wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is aimed to remove the impurities (organic substances, nitrogen compounds andphosphate) present in the water. The activated sludge process (ASP) is a natural way of treating the wastewater with thehelp of microorganisms. Here, the biomass oxidizes the organic matter to carbon dioxide and forms new biomass. Also, thebiomass is responsible for nitrification and de-nitrification process respectively. For the effective treatment process, themicroorganisms require sufficient dissolved oxygen (DO) to be present in the water. Hence maintaining the DOconcentration in the aerobic reactors is an important control problem. Objective:The WWTP is a non-linear process due to its high interactive nature and varying influent disturbances. Here, an adaptive PIcontroller is proposed to maintain the DO concentration at 2mg/l in the fifth reactor.Method:The MRAC technique tunes the PI controller parameters based on the error between the reference model and the actualplant output. Results:The plant is simulated with three dynamic weather conditions. The controller performance criteria (IAE, ISE, MSE) valuesof MRAC-PI is lower than the benchmark PI controller values. The average aeration energy spent under MRAC-PI schemefor the dry, rain and storm weather conditions are 3698.1 kWhr/day, 3689 kWhr /day and 3728.2 kWhr /day respectively. Conclusions:From the simulation results, the MRAC-PI controller offered strong control actions in terms of IAE, ISE and MSE than thebenchmark PI, to maintain DO concentration at 2mg/l. In both the schemes, the aeration energy spent is almost same but theMRAC-PI scheme produced better effluent quality. Hence, the proposed controller shows benefits in controlling DOconcentration under various disturbances.

Modeling of ECG Wave sequence using Stochastic Petri-netK.Selvakumar1, K.Latha2

1Research scholar, 2Associate Professor, Department of Instrumentation Engineering, MIT Campus, Anna University, Chennai

AbstractBackground:Modeling of ECG wave sequences plays an important role in studying the function of heart. The work is concerned withunified modeling frame work for the behavior of ECG wave sequences. In this context, Petri nets (PNs) have recentlyemerged as a promising tool among the various methods employed for the modeling and analysis. We present a stochasticPetri-net implementation for dynamic representation of wave sequences.ObjectiveThe motivation of the work is to model the function of heart with Petri-net and capture the wave timing characteristics of acardiac rhythms.MethodsThe normal heart can be modeled with three elements the SinoAtrial (SA) node, AtrioVentricular (AV) node and ventriclesand these elements can respectively implemented as the auto rhythmic unit, conduction unit and absolute refractory unit. The output of the model is the timing of generation of P and R waves and these are represented by firing of the transitionst0, t1, and t3. The transition t0 and t1 for P wave and t3 for R wave. The parameters of the model are the processing timesassociated with the places p0, p1, p2 and p3 these correspond with the auto rhythmic interval of the SA node and therefractory period of the ventricles, respectively.ResultsThe modeling methodology presented in this work is expected to be applicable to a wide range of electrical phenomena inthe heart. It is also flexible in the sense that modeling at various complexity level is possible.ConclusionsThe systematic procedure for constructing concise mathematical model capable of generating the P, R wave patterns ofnormal heart function is carried out .The Stochastic Petri net modeling methodology, in turn, offers a general, abstractframework to synthesize and analyze the heart.

A Implementation to Countermeasures against Side Channel Attacks on Elliptic CurveCryptosystem

T. Sudhakar1 V. Natarajan2

1Research scholar, 2Professor, Department of Instrumentation Engineering, MIT Campus, Anna University, Chennai

AbstractBackground:Elliptic Curve Cryptosystems (ECC) proved to be the cryptosystem of the future generation due to its smaller key size anduncompromised security. However, Side channel attacks are the most threatening attack on ECC implementations to getsecret key through side channel information such as time or power consumed by the device. The secret key informationnormally retrieved while running the decryption algorithm in smart cards by the timing and power analysis. Objective:To provide secure and efficient implementation to prevent the side channel attack on Elliptic curve Cryptography. Methods:The important operation of ECC decryption algorithm is Elliptic Curve Scalar Multiplication (ECSM). The basic algorithmto implement ECSM is Double-and-Add Algorithm. This algorithm leaks secret key information to simple power analysis(SPA) attack. Several algorithms were proposed to overcome SPA, the Montgomery ladder algorithm is the most secured. But, it is vulnerable to differential power analysis (DPA) attack. Scalar randomization and base point blinding are the twosolutions proposed for DPA.Results:Scalar randomization and base point blinding has been implemented and the running times were compared with differentkey sizes. Conclusions:Two different techniques, Scalar Randomization and Base Point Blinding are incorporated to the existing algorithm tothwart timing attack. Among this, Scalar Randomization algorithm proves to be very efficient as it makes the timinginformation obtained from the system useless.

1Department of ECE, SSN College of Engineering, Chennai2Department of Instrumentation Engineering, MIT Campus, Anna University, Chennai

AbstractBackground:Reversible Watermarking (RW) is embedding secret information into the cover media and extracting both, without anydistortion. In Difference Expansion (DE) RW, if no overflow or underflow occurs, one bit of data is embedded into thedifference between adjacent pixels. The location map, that is used to identify the embedded pixels, is also embedded intothe cover media. At detection, the embedded bits and original pixels are recovered using location map. Objective:To increase the embedding capacity with low distortion by using local prediction based DE.Methods:In prediction based DE method, the secret data is embedded using the prediction error. The original pixels are predictedusing any predictor and prediction error is calculated between the original and predicted pixels. Median prediction uses fourrhombus neighbours to predict a pixel. Median edge prediction takes three causal pixels as prediction context and appliesedge rule to predict current pixel. Gradient adjusted prediction takes seven causal pixels as prediction context and weightsthem based on estimated local gradients of the cover image. In Local prediction, the image is split into non-overlappingsubblocks. For each subblock, the border pixels are predicted using MED prediction and the other pixels are predictedusing local least square prediction with rhombus context. Results:The embedding capacity and stego image quality are calculated for different medical images by varying the threshold.Highest frequency for prediction error zero will increase the embedding capacity. Conclusion:The local prediction method exploits the redundancy in the image and improves the hiding capacity. The local predictionachieves low distortion and good stego image quality with good embedding capacity compared with other predictionmethods.

Design of multimodal fuzzy control of pH neutralization process.S.Kanagalakshmi1, D.Manamalli2

1Research scholar, 2Associate Professor, Department of Instrumentation Engineering, MIT Campus, Anna University, Chennai

AbstractBackground:Neutralization of acid waste is a major problem for the chemical processing industries. Linear control strategies providepowerful control design tools, but the main limitation is that, a single model developed around a particular operatingcondition may not be able to represent a plant in the full operating range when the plant dynamics exhibit nonlinearities. Objective:The multi linear model approach is considered as a powerful design for developing a controller. The idea is to represent thenonlinear system as a combination of linear systems. Multimodal Fuzzy controllers are developed. The Servo responses ofcontrollers for different set points are obtained. Methods:The pH is assumed to have an operating range of 1 to 14. In order to compensate for the non- linearity, the entire non-linearregion is divided into the following four linear regions. The contribution of each controller will be decided by the weightsthat are generated, based on the current pH measured value and setpoint. Results:The Nonlinear pH process, as a family of local linear models, and we have obtained that the multiple-linear modelsweighted using the triangular membership function, are able to capture the dynamic behavior of the pH process adequately. Conclusions:The multi model controller is implemented with fuzzy for the pH neutralization process. The fuzzy control yields a bettersettling time, and also improves the performance of pH neutralization process at the sensitive point of pH value from 11 to5.8.

Modeling and control of a Nuclear ReactorV.Govindan1, N.Pappa2

1Teaching Fellow, 2 Associate Professor, Department of Instrumentation Engineering, MIT Campus, Anna University, ChennaiAbstract

Background: A large Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor is a high order complex system with a large number of states andinput variables. Various models have been constructed and used to design controllers for a reactor. An accurate method thathas been used in both the research community and industry is the nodal method. Objective: To develop a state feedbackcontrol scheme for controlling xenon-induced spatial oscillations in a large, pressurized heavy water reactor. The nonlinearmathematical model of the reactor is linearized over rated power of the reactor and design an optimal controller to maintainthe core power distribution close to a desired shape. Methods: Each zone of PHWR contains a Liquid Zone Controllercompartment which is used as the primary method of continuous fine control of the reactivity by varying the light waterlevels. The liquid zone control system provides a reactivity range of around ±3.5 mk. In the case of any unusual events thatrequire an insertion of more than +3.5 mk, the adjuster rods system will be activated, and with less than -3.5 mk, themechanical control rods system will be activated. Results: The processes of a controlling model for nuclear reactors havebeen developed and simulated in MATLAB software and all responses, including oscillation and transient responses, havebeen analyzed. Conclusion: If the oscillations in the power distribution are left uncontrolled, the power density and thetime rate of change of power at some locations in the reactor core may exceed the respective permissible limits, resultinginto increased chances of fuel failure. Hence, in large thermal reactors it becomes necessary to employ automatic power

distribution control systems besides the system for control of global power output.

Model based Control scheme for Boiler-Turbine UnitS. Kapil Arasu1 and J. Prakash1

1 Department of Instrumentation Engineering, MIT Campus, Anna University, ChennaiAbstract

Background: A boiler-turbine system is an energy conversion device where a single boiler is used to generate steam that isdirectly fed to a single turbine. The model for the boiler-turbine unit used in this work was developed by Bell and Astrom. Objective: The principal objective in the control of the boiler-turbine system is to regulate the electric power output to meet theload demand arising from the power grid, while maintaining the output variables (drum pressure and drum level) within desiredbounds and the power plant should be able to operate in multiple operating regions. Method: The steps involved in the design of amultiple-linear model based controller for the non-linear system are as follows: i. For each operating point, the system is stabilizedusing a state feedback approach. ii. Determine the gain of the stabilized model (Km) for the multi-variable system at eachoperating point. iii. Determine controller gain (Kc) to satisfy either desired performance or robustness specification usingappropriate optimization technique. iv. The global controller output is the weighted sum of all local controller outputs. Results:The proposed model based control scheme has been implemented on the simulated non-linear model of boiler-turbine unitassuming all the state variables are available for measurement. The proposed control scheme is able to maintain the drum pressureand electric output at their desired reference values, while regulating the drum level. Conclusion: From the extensive simulationstudies it had been inferred that the highly nonlinear and tightly coupled boiler-turbine unit can be maintained satisfactorily at alloperating points without violating input constraints using the proposed control scheme.
