With RAS, fish can be produced close to markets, almost anywhere in the world,

Fish can be produced independently on local temperature regimes.

Access to freshwater not essential. Only small amounts of either freshwater or seawater required.

The very most desired species can be produced, as we are not limited by nature given conditions.

Investments and operation costs are now becoming equivalent to cage farming.

Game Changer: RAS The middle east becomes a location for fishfarming.

RAS turbot facility. South China, chilled facility. Local high value live fish market. RAS delivery: UNI-Aqua A/S

Access to juveniles – general limited access to juveniles of marine species like Groupers, Seriola (kingfish) and Tuna. All year supply is required to optimize output from RAS growout unit.

Access to RAS technology – farming of marine fish more profitable, but technology more complicated.

Access to some amounts of freshwater or seawater. A total of 40 l. to 400 l. of water is required per kilo production of fish. (against 50000 l in flow through)

Energy: The energy requirement is 1,5- 2,5 KWh, per produced kilo of fish.

Requirements

Fry for RAS facilities, should be produced in a pathogen free environment too.

Availability of Fry is a limitation for the industry, can be difficult to produce, due to the requirement of Fatty- and amino-acids. Further all year supply is required to generate optimal revenue from RAS farms.

The fry production technology, original developed at Maximus (www.sashimiroyal.com), has been applied in several hatcheries. It has proven, a very suitable solution for production of fry of kingfish, tuna, turbot, sole, cod and halibut, and has a potential for grouper production as well.

Carbon equilibrium in seawater

In seawater the majority of CO2 will transform into HCO3

-, which cannot be stripped out. The CO2 stripping then has to be very efficient to maintain a balance with a low total CO2/bicarbonate pool, otherwise growth reduction and a poor FQ will develop.

A stripping devise of the media/surface contact type, with gravity water flow under vacuum, is one of the few that performs efficiently in seawater. Right the Kruger Kaldnes /Veolia CO2 stripper. Aeration type of strippers are insufficient. www.krugerkaldnes.no

Technology – general not a problem, there are several serious suppliers, even only a few can offer systems suitable for seawater.

Project execution: One of the biggest risk, are gabs in the list of responsibility between suppliers, where critical elements might not be counted for.

Chinese box syndrome, fish-farming looks simpler and less complicated on the outside than is.

Delays in construction. Production output/revenue will be missing in budgets. Critical that growout facility is ready ,when juveniles arrive. If a full year revenue is missing – can the company cope ?, will the supplier cover the losses?

Lack of liquidity up to cash flow.

Risk elements

Attention to details and standardisation procedures in design is important. On the picture what should be a fixed submerged fluidized bio-filter, only on the day after initial start up.

What appears that simple at first glance, hides multi layers of complexity. Which requires an integrated solution in the one and same solution, normally without option of a later fix.

Solution – Turnkey standard deliveries

On deliveries of RAS facilities, clients will expect low risk on functionality, quality, delivery time and a supply at a cost, which will generate a satisfying profit in production.

What would the cost, the delivery time and the quality of your car be, if it was custom made, based on local part suppliers, and build by the local

garage /workshop?

Standardized Patented RAS-concept by Veolia. Standardized car concept by BMW.

Production costs in RAS

Capital costs: Turnkey RAS unit: 4-7 EUR/kilo production capacity. - equivalent to capital costs per kilo production capacity in cage farming in Norway on infrastructure and concessions.

Construction: Graakjaer (www.graakjaer.dk) Supplier of RAS2020, and turn key RAS projects in joint delivery with Veolia)

WTS- equipment, AKVA.

A project which shows the future on how to produce fish efficiently close to markets and processors, but not how to do future RAS installations. The Integration between suppliers to complicated, incomplete, and causing critical delays. Construction time/time to cash flow to long.
