The above unit was opened by Virginia Bottomley MP.the 1'1 in is te r for H Po a 1 th. 0 n 13th No vem ber I9 90 . Theequipment for the new seven bedded intensive careunit was funded by the Tavistock family in appreciationfor the care received by Lord Tavistock when he wasa patient at the National.

REDEVELOPMENT AT QUEEN SQUARE

A maJor redevelopment at Queen Square will foCI I ttatethe concentration of all clinical activities tlereby 1994. The refurbished Examination Hall on thewest side of the Square will be a temporarY,home tothe Outpatients Department. Pharmacy. Neuro-otologyand Psychology department while a new five storeybuilding rises on the Powis Place site adjacent toGreat Ormond Street Hospital. The new building willprovide four operating theatres. two intensive careunits. three neurosurgery wards. a neuroloqy wardand programmed investigation unit. a private patients'ward and out-patients' department.

The (30 million scheme has attracted (20 million ofGovernment funding and the remainder is beinq raisedfrom private sources in the first major funo-raisingprogramme organised by the Hospital for more thanSO years.

NAME CHANGE

The Hospital has been renamed the National Hospitalfor Neurology and Neurosurgery.

A very successful Reception for Queen Square Alumni was heldin Boston on Monday 22nd April. About 35 people attended, and we hadan excellent dinner at st. Botolph I s Club in Carrronwealth Avenue.Its success was very largely due to the hard work put in by thoseorganising the event, namely Dr. Shirley Wray, Dr. Robert Ackermanin Boston, Dr. John Steiner from Cincinnati, and Dr. Michael Finkelfrom Eau Claire.

It is with great sadness that we record the death of Ri:x.JerGj lliatt.He died in Washington on 19th August. In 1962 he was apppointedthe first Professor of clinical neurology at the Institute o[Neurology_ He was also honorary consultant to the MiddlesexHospital for rrore than 25 years and subsequently until hisretirement in1987 held a similar position at the Royal PostgraduateMedical SchCJOl and the Hamnersmith Hospital. On his retirementhe ,,"'asin\'ited to become Senior Consultant in Clinical Neurophysiologyat the National Institutes for Neurological Disease and Strokein Beths~ja, USA - a mark of the high international esteem in',.;hich he ,",'ashe ld .
