THOUGHTS

DESTINATION RIYADH

Be content with what you have

This is the luxury issue and we’ve opened the doors to all things top notch. From the world’s most expensive yacht to the crème de la crème of fine dining. However we want you to consider this, luxury living is a state of mind that does not have to be restricted to materialistic objects that break your bank.

How is it a state of mind? Well, we won’t deny that when you buy those fashion forward Christian Loubutin heels you will feel those happy tingles lifting you up on top of the world. But really, how long does that feeling last? Until Chanel releases the next it bags you desperately want?

A nice, well-deserved splurge here and there should be guilt free, as long as you basic necessities are covered. But when you find yourself digging for an excuse to spend SR 20,000 on a leather bag even if it means you wont be

able to cover your bills that month, it’s time to stop.

Living luxurious can be pursued in different ways. You can live that lifestyle for yourself and be content with what you have to the fullest. It’s ok to want pretty things, but be careful not to feel like you are in need of anything that will put you or your family in bankruptcy. It always starts with small I owe you’s here and there until it spirals out of control.

Once you realize that you can feel just as fabulous and luxurious without showing off

those multiple zeros in the price tag. You will live a much simpler, much more

meaningful life. And hopefully continue on that principle of living to future generations to come. Because we don’t know about you, but we can’t seem to keep up with the latest on demand Chanel bag that the society is craving for.

Dirab Golf Course & Country Club

Located 45 kilometers south west of Riyadh and nestled in the picturesque Tawfiq valley, Dirab Golf and Country club is considered to be a favorite haven for the

affluent. The exclusive estate boasts of lush tree-lined fairways, perfectly manicured greens and a desert mountain skyline on its horizon. Its executive country club and

equestrian stables make for the ultimate hideaway for high-living Riyadhis.

SpecialPlaces

Page 21: DR Issue 9

Ibrahim Abunayyan and Sons built and developed the Dirab Golf and Country Club at a time when the city was in need of it and surely it has garnered quite an impressive list of platinum membership holders and corporate patrons that has made it one of the exclusive go-to places for their executives and global guests.

Being the first grassed 18-hole Par 72 Championship and 9-hole Par 27 Academy golf course in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; Dirab Golf Course has been the

venue for both international and local golf tournaments. The contour of the entire course was designed to make use of its unique desert landscape, hence, it comes naturally for professional golfers and amateurs alike, who have considered it both a challenge worth overcoming as well as astoundingly beautiful.

Whenever we would visit Dirab, it always felt like being somewhere outside of the Kingdom. As a child I would sometimes pretend that I was in a Nevada ranch as I walked by its stables filled with the finest Arabian horses.

Following with the tradition of being a well-reputed equestrian sanctuary; THE DIRAB POLO CLUB WAS ESTABLISHED IN 2010 and it has certainly received quite an elite following, garnering compliments from THE GUARDS POLO CLUB OF WINDSOR GREAT PARK IN THE UK.

This highly exclusive and to an extent, attention elusive country club and villa resort does not advertise the many amenities on offer to its members and their guests, but we can guarantee that it's up-market, its clubhouse is as good as it gets when it comes to general hospitality, dining, banqueting, pro-shop, locker room, and get-fit facilities.

When not making use of its driving range, members can lounge around a garden swimming pool, play tennis, join their rugby match ups and even enjoy driving around in their carts.

Indeed, Dirab is one of those places that cater to those with the finest taste in past-times. Nonetheless, every now and then, though at a pricier rate, regular guests would enjoy visiting it for a taste of the good life.

Business

In a city where there’s always a yearning to enjoy a good laugh, have fun and be amused, Khaled Mansour Al Saud founded a company that capitalizes on providing people with entertainment that’s relatively pushing the boundaries while maintaining cultural sensitivity. With first of its kind shows like the Fluffy Comedy Tour, managing Saudi talents like Fahad Al Butairy, Qusai and featuring internationally acclaimed artists for exclusive concerts in Riyadh, it’s no wonder you’ll find the Riyadh elite and Riyadhis who are willing to shell out for VIP tickets, converge at luxury events. Here’s a look at the man behind it all.

KHALEDAL SAUD The Man Behindthe Show

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you came up with the concept of Luxury Events and a Luxury Agency? I graduated from Al Faisal University from the business and project management program. I am currently the Chief Executive Officer for Luxury Investments, which is a Saudi based investments company holding the following five major businesses: Luxury Events, Luxury Agency, Luxury Studios, Luxury Pictures and Luxury Technology.

Luxury Events was inspired and developed based on my individual passion for project management; I wanted to organize unique events that would be a new direction for Saudi entertainment while still respecting our ethics, values, and religion. I drew inspiration principally from my experiences

managing events for family and friend, but the ideas gained from the Kingdom’s business sector informed my mission and goals. I developed this passion during university and became committed to doing my part to grow the entertainment business in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East.

How did you settle on the name Luxury? The name Luxury was chosen to build an association between what we are eager to produce in the most unique and sophisticated way possible. The name should give the audience the feel of what they are dealing with and what our companies have in store for them. What services do you offer? Each company offers a unique set of services

From left: Illusionist Ahmed El Bayed, Khaled Mansour Al Saud

Page 23: DR Issue 9

DESTINATION RIYADH 21

to a number of business sectors including but not limited to governmental, educational, corporate, public and private sectors. The services that Luxury Events offers include preparing and executing any function or event publicly and privately. Luxury Events is an event company specialized in providing the best in terms of sports, private, corporate and entertainment events. We pride ourselves in coming up with new creative, artistic and innovative techniques in regards to organizing phenomenal events of the highest standards in terms of quality and service. Now we have begun to focus on corporate social responsibilities, putting in every effort to give back to the vast community of locals and expats living in Saudi Arabia who have made us what we are today!

Did you face any challenges along the way? There is no success without challenges. Every obstacle has a solution when it is handled properly. I would say the main obstacle was building a new identity for the entertainment business sector in Saudi Arabia and understanding the different mentalities and meeting the requirements of the market. Needless to say, producing ideas and projects according to the culture and the society needed its share of research and findings to alter it according to the needs of the market.

As a talent agency, what do you actually do? How do you recruit talent and become their agent? Luxury Agency consists of a number of agents who are responsible for guiding the professional career of artists in the entertainment industry. Each agent is required to support and promote the interests of his talent. Luxury Agency has many ways to recruit talent. The agents usually attend shows and scout performers to see if they can develop their talent. Luxury Agency has scheduled auditions to give the opportunity for performers to showcase their talent. Since it was established in 2011.

How many talents do you represent? Is it hard to find Saudi talent? What criteria do you have for signing someone? Luxury Agency represents 31 artists from different fields, including stand-up comedy, beatbox, rap, dancers, hosts, acrobats, actors and modeling. Luxury Agency believes that every performer has room for improvement and development, and all we look for is potential when scouting for the next big thing.

What kind of events do you generally host? How can someone book a talent? The kind of entertainment we produce in our events includes but not limited to comedy, acting, magic, sports tournaments, beat boxing, rapping and others. The process of booking a talent is fairly simple. The client

Comedy seems to be central in the Luxury brand. What is it about comedy that is so important? Comedy has been known for being a unique kind of art that many enjoy within different cultures and societies. Considering our values, ethics and the rules and laws of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, we found that comedy is the perfect fit for our culture and society’s entertainment sector. Focusing on the flexibility of the market, what makes comedy special are the different age groups, ethnic backgrounds, educational levels, and geographic areas who appreciate the kind

RANGE ROVER 2013THE ELEGANT BRUTE

The Range Rover is one of the most desirable and popular cars here in Riyadh regardless if it’s the sport or regular one. It’s listed as one of the finest luxury SUVs in the world. Given the terrain of Riyadh and the many activities that involve traversing the sand dunes, the Range Rover is an instant and ideal choice for us. The prices of the new Range Rover depends on the type and the specification. It could start at around 350,000 SR and move up to 850,000 SR.

THE MANUAL GUIDE Riyadh’s Fast and Furious

A drive down Tahliya and you’ll be able to feast your eyes on automotive eyecandy, what can I say? We Najdi boys like our toys big, fast and beautiful. So we thought,

why not put together a primer of our Riyadhi fave rides? These platinum wheels are bound to get you revved up…

BMW 6TH SERIES GRAND COUPETHE GERMAN GENTLEMAN

I am personally in love with this car because it gives the feeling of a coupe but it’s also a sedan. It can be considered a luxury car and a sports car at the same time. The price of BMW 6th series starts from 320,000 SR, which makes it a slightly affordable entry, all things considered. In my opinion, the designers at BMW tried to do something that can be compared with Mercedes-Benz CLS. The BHB at 6000 RPM is varied because of the engine’s specifications, which is between 320 BHB – 560 BHB. The BMW grand coupe is a favorite among executives and high rolling Riyadhis due to its sophisticated flair that just makes for a slick everyday ride.

FERRARI CALIFORNIATHE CHARISMATIC ITALIAN

Ferrari California is the first ever front V8-engined Ferrari and after thinking of what car would be the coolest to cruise down Tahliya with, this came up as the one with surefire bragging rights. This car can give BHB 490 at 7000 RPM, which can be compared with the BMW 6th series. Furthermore, the design of Ferrari California is great from the exterior with a folding metal roof. Out of all the Ferrari models, I find the California to have the best interiors in their line. The price of this car is between 770,000 – 900,000 SR. It is said that "Ferrari engines are musically engineered to sound perfect by utilizing 3rd and 6th harmonics on the air intake, like an organ or flute."

KOENIGSEGG CCXR “THE SPECIAL ONE” A SWEDISH MONSTER

One of a kind eye candy, the Swedish monster Koenigsegg CCXR. “The Special One” 2010 comes with a V8, 4.8cc engine that gives a magnificent power output of 1018 BHB at 7000 RPM. Aptly categorized as a hypercar, the CCXR can go from 0-100 km in 2.9 seconds. Apart from the power it’s packing under its hood, it’s the color of this car that makes it a one of a kind. The exterior design of Koenigsegg CCXR speaks for itself and the interior is also quite attractive. It has been sold at 4.5 million SR from the ‘ALO CAR’ showroom. Expect heads to turn while it passes by, it makes quite a noisy introduction.

MERCEDES-BENZ A45 AMG 2014 THE PRINCE OF HATCHBACKS

Designed to be pitted against the hatchback of Audi and M135i, the Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG 2014 takes the prize for being able to look fierce despite being compact. You can buy a normal Mercedez A-series from dealers like Al Jafali Company for a 132,000 SR price tag. If you were really looking to be a cut above the rest then you’d have to go for this model, which is triple the price at Auto Kingdom. What’s the difference? Power of course, it has the A45 engine which is the most powerful engine series production for four-cylinder. A hatchback that can hit 0 - 100 km in 4.6 seconds while looking dapper can only be described as awesome.

Riyadh is THE place for autospotting, take a snapshot of the best cars you’ve seen cruising in the city. We’d love to share it! Tag us at @destinationryd #DRAutoLove

How do you think Social Media is changing or contributing to the Saudi community? Social media is changing the entire universe, not only the Saudi community. It’s opening up a network to discuss, hear other people’s thoughts, share conceptions, argue misconceptions- it’s just endless. Social media can help economies support each other by finding out about events or people who need support. Many charities for example have taken to twitter as a main medium to reach out to people. Also, what I personally love about social media is the fact that gives the opportunity for talented people to show what they can do without needing the money or the flashy upscale producers or events to reach the public. They are right there at the touch of your finger, and if your good enough, you just might make it.

For this article, let’s call anything that greatly affects your bank account a big purchase- it could be a car, a vacation or even a pair of shoes. After you make a purchase is when you realize whether you love it or hate and regret it. Let’s see what people have loved and hated recently!

Dolce & Gabbana dress worth 6,600 SR. I fell in love with it but when I wore it, I hated it and never wore it again.

A pair of Moss Lipow Ostrich leather sunglasses worth 14,300 SR. I lost it after wearing it just a few times and since then I decided I would never purchase expensive glasses.

A Van Cleef and Arpels ring worth 85,000 SR. I fell in love with it and I still like it but I regret buying it because I can only wear it on certain occasions.

Chinchilla coat worth 19,000 SR. Even though it was a bargain, I didn't get a chance to wear it.

Tods crocodile handbag, the original price is 67,077 SR but I got it on a discount for 20,700 SR. I am in love with it and I carry it all the time.

A property in King Abdullah Economic City worth 700,000 SR.

A Graff ring worth 145,000 SR. It’s worth every penny!

A yellow diamond necklace worth 45,000 SR. I just love it!

Who doesn’t love scoring a great bargain? Without bartering? Exactly. I love imparting some of my Riyadhi shopping secrets, so without further ado, here’s your quick chic,

cheap but not shabby guide on where to find hidden fashion gems in the city, also known as The Very Concise Suggestions on How to Score An Hermes Dress for 350 SR.

Outlets are the Fountain of Youth to thrifty luxury brand-seekers. Of course, the ability to find a good bargain depends on the quality of the outlet, the source it’s getting its wares from, and what I like to call ‘the rush hour of shopping,’ but with a little smart research, a lot of patience and some luck, you’ll be in those Giuseppe Zanotti boots in no time. It’s amazing but true – we do have a few hidden outlets right here in Riyadh! You need to wade through the muck to get to the gems, but that’s where all the fun is anyway. Go at the beginning of each season to catch the last, and don’t worry about buying brands a few seasons old, it’s the quality that counts after all. You can find a large number of luxury outlets in old Alaqariyah mall and one in the Nimr building.

They always say leave the best for last, and boy is this the bestest of best. Charity sales are marvelous, especially charity sales in Saudi Arabia. You’re probably confused- let me explain. See, we like buying very expensive bags and clothing. Islam also encourages one to be giving and to give to the poor from one’s best, so we also like charity. The result being is that many people from time to time donate their designer bags, clothing and shoes to charity organizations so that the less unfortunate would benefit (and the spring cleaning done).

Charity organizations came up with the idea that selling these donated items would be of more use to the families than giving it away. This is the best place for a bargain, never doubt that for a minute. And the best thing about it? Whatever money you spend towards claiming your new item will be money given to help someone else. It’s the ultimate dream, shopping without guilt. And since most rich people like to change their bags with the change of the season, most of

Azature, or king of black diamonds, unveiled the world’s most expensive nail polish last year. The nail polish was the answer to the designers question "why not showcase diamonds (267 carats of black diamonds to be specific) on nails?" The product’s release was met with strong reactions from the public, ranging from commandment to dismay. Luckily, a sensible retail version of the polish is available at 94 SR for a 15 ml bottle. If you’re interested you can grab yourself a bottle from Harvey Nichols Riyadh, which stocks the product seasonally.

l’Abeille de Guerlain, or the Bee of Guerlain, is the maison’s most exclusive perfume crafted in honor of its founder Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain. Only 46 bottles exist, each one a carefully handmade Baccarat crystal-winged, diamond-faceted bottle which cradles the amber liquid in its ‘bee’ body. The bee is a nod to Guerlain’s heritage, as it was the emblem of France’s second empire during which the founder created perfumes for Empress Eugénie of France. Luckily, Riyadh’s very own Harvey Nichols is home to one of these rarities. It’s up for grabs for a little over 90,000 SR.

The phrase “saving up for a new phone” is taken to a whole new level when it comes to Vertu. The Nokia-owner British luxury mobile maker released its newest phone Constellation in October 2013. The reason for that sky-high price is almost entirely down to its design. Each phone is hand-built in Hampshire, England. The back of the phone is covered in real calf's leather and the case is made of polished grade five titanium, one of the lightest and strongest metals in the world. The new phone can be found in Vertu’s stores in Kingdom and Centria malls.

KiddieBabies dressed in designer labels at the age of zero, toddlers driving around in Audi

pedal cars and children jet setting across the globe more than you’ve managed to travel in a lifetime. Some say it’s too much while others simply say it’s giving your child the finest life can offer. Regardless, Kiddie Upscale Living is real and Richie

Rich’s parents would have a field day with these luxury must haves.

BLING BLING PACIFIERS

Because being born with a silver spoon doesn’t quite cut it, a jeweler named Matt Case made a platinum pacifier worth 85,000 USD. CHIC MOMMY, CHIC BABY

Dior first came out with its pint-size collection (Baby Dior) for children in the 1960’s. In recent years, a lot of other fashion labels like Burberry, Lanvin, and Gucci have realized that kids wear is no child’s play and if style is a way of life, why not start as early as you can?

Riyadhi Tip: Fashion conscious mommies can score the latest high fashion threads for their little prince and princesses at Harvey Nichols. They currently have Little Marc Jacobs, Junior Gaultier, John Galliano, Miss Grant, Ralph Lauren Kids and Pale Cloud (Angelina Jolie’s kids are apparently strutting in its AW13 collection) to name a few.

LUXURY TOYS

While fashion labels expand their reach towards baby items and kids wear, luxury car brands are going all out with kid size Ferraris and Audi Type Cs (10,000 USD - 20,000 USD) luring perhaps the affluent parents than the toddlers that would supposedly be driving them. There’s also the Playsam Saab ride on car sold at 500 USD, which would seem like a bargain if your kid actually knows what a Saab is.

For expecting parents, Aston Martin teamed up with the folks at Silver Cross and created a limited edition pram that’s basically one of the most expensive strollers in the market at 3,231 USD.

Riyadhi Fact: Skipping the whole kiddie toy cars, you’ll find bespoke luxury cars customized for certain privileged children in Riyadh. Mercedes-Benz equipped with a 32-inch TV and a DVD to play Barney as a gift to a newborn isn’t a myth.

THE SWEET SUITE LIFE

Five star hotels around the world are learning that the best way to woo their VIP guests is to pamper the VIPs’ kids too. Four Seasons Berlin offers a miniature Mercedes Benz that can be driven in their lobby up to miniature mahogany steps so that their young guests can check-in themselves at the reception.

Then there are the Barbie and Hot Wheels rooms at the Paris Hotel Plaza Athanee, where everything has been “child-resized.”

Riyadhi Tip: Four seasons has a family weekend package including child activities program. You can also try the Ritz Carlton Riyadh that has a kiddie buffet and play area.

The city is home to a very active dining scene and a handful of the restaurants have fashioned themselves to be the “fine dining” experience for those willing to spend more

opening up your wallets for.

There’s no way you’ll get lost trying to find the The Globe. It has become a landmark for the city of Riyadh, it is the gold orb perched at the top of the Al Faisaliah Tower. Whether you come in for some afternoon high tea or for a formal sit down dinner, the table setting, their menu and atmosphere will leave you feeling like you are literally on top of the world.

The Fine in Fine Dining

How would you categorize a fine dining restaurant from a simply posh one?Is it the crisp white linens and tablecloth? Waiters in Tuxedos? Or the number of forks on the table? What particular qualities does it need to have to set it apart from other restaurants?

Fine dining, as the name suggests, refers to the FINEST food, service and ambiance, along with the highest standards of quality and cleanliness. All these aspects determine the overall quality a diner must experience in fine dining.

As far as food goes, it should offer diners an experience they cannot find anywhere else. The menu should be creative, exquisite and original. Special attention to detail should be given to dishes; which use quality ingredients and are carefully and thoughtfully plated, pleasing both to the eye and palate.

Service: Diners expect exemplary service, which must be attentive but never invasive. Staff should be expertly trained, enthusiastic and professional. Starting from the host who meets guests in a friendly manner, to the waiters who crumb tables between courses and leading up to the speed of valet parking, no detail is ever too small.

Ambiance: environment and decor should match the restaurant's vision. Aesthetics such as staff uniform, lighting, china, glassware and silverware should be spotless, elegant, tasteful and exclusive.

When planning a trip, we usually get overwhelmed with the amount of guidebooks and “places to see” lists. This is where the Michelin guide steps in, an annual guide published by the French company Michelin for the last hundred years.

It all started in 1900, the Michelin brothers André and Édouard, founders of the well-known tires company, decided that the best way to boost the demand for tires was to create free maps for French motorists to make traveling around and finding places to refuel an easy task – at the time, there were around only 3000 cars in France. Over the coming years, they started creating more guides to different countries from Tunisia to Portugal.

During World War I, the production of the guides had to be suspended. One day, one of the brothers saw a man using one of the guides to prop up a work bench, and so decided to charge for the guides, as he believed that people only value what they paid for. During World War II, the guides had to be suspended once again, but then the Allied Forces asked the company to produce guides for military use, as they were believed to be the best up-to-date maps available.

When the company realized the popularity of the restaurants section, they started hiring “inspectors” to review restaurants. The anonymity of these inspectors is very important to the company; they are even discouraged from revealing their jobs to their families! Based on the inspectors’ reviews, a restaurant may receive one to three Michelin stars. Gaining or losing a Michelin star can dramatically affect the restaurant’s success, and these stars have been called the “Oscars” of restaurants. The Michelin guide has also been awarding “Rising Star” to restaurants that could potentially gain stars in the future.

What’s better than a guide that has lived over a hundred years and survived two world wars to tell you where to go?

There seems to be an age-old struggle between two forces in people’s mind that is hindering many from achieving their full potential. This is the apparent contradiction between being ambitious versus being content. Both qualities are well respected and even encouraged to have, however when they are brought together in one person’s mind or heart, there seems to be a conflict.

More importantly, this dilemma has infected the ummah (society) with the disease of laziness; some say ”Alhamdulillah, I’m content with what I have, why should I be ambitious and strive for more?” I translate this into: “I can’t be bothered to do anything, I just want to live within my comfort zone.” As you can expect, this mind-set is dangerous for the ummah’s growth.

A MUSLIM'S CAREER:BEING CONTENT VS. AMBITIOUS

By Mohammed Faris, Abu Productive

Let us firstly explore both concepts from a linguistic point of view.

Ambition: Drive, determination, enterprise, initiative, eagerness, motivation, resolve, enthusiasm, zeal, hunger, commitment, a sense of purpose; aspiration, intention, goal, aim, objective, object, purpose, intent, plan, desire, wish, design, target, dream.

Contentment: Contentedness, content, satisfaction, gratification, fulfillment, happiness, pleasure, cheerfulness. ease, comfort, well being, peace, equanimity, serenity, tranquility.

As you can see, from a definition point of view, there isn’t much of a contradiction between the two concepts. The states of being “ambitious” and “content” seem to serve different aspects of our drive to be the best – one is driving us (ambition), the other is making us enjoy the ride (contentment)!

WHERE DOES THE CONTRADICTION LIE? The contradiction lies in our misunderstanding that being content means not wanting to achieve more, and that being ambitious to achieve more is a sign that you’re not content. This is definitely not the case.

SO HOW CAN WE RESOLVE THIS IDEA? Let us look into the Quran and Seerah of Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessings be upon him) to answer this dilemma: Regarding ambition, Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) says in the Quran what means:“And those who pray, “Our Lord! Grant unto us wives and offspring who will be the comfort of our eyes, and give us (the grace) to lead the righteous.” [Surat 25 Al-Furqan, Verse 74]

And our Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The distance between every two levels of Paradise is like the distance between the sky and the Earth, so if you ask Allah for anything, ask Him for the Firdaus, for it is the last part of Paradise and the highest part of Paradise, and at its top there is the Throne

Spirituality

Page 63: DR Issue 9

DESTINATION RIYADH 61

of Beneficent, and from it gush forth the rivers of Paradise.” [Bukhari, Book #93, Hadith #519]

Furthermore, in numerous places throughout the Quran, we are told that to achieve Jannah we have to:1) Have imaan2) Do righteous works

We can now understand that we should be ambitious; however this ambition is to serve the person’s ultimate goal and that is to gain Allah’s pleasure and entering the highest part of Jannah (Paradise).

Regarding contentment, Allah says in the Qur’an what means: “Nor strain thine eyes in longing for the things We have given for enjoyment to parties of them, the splendor of the life of this world, through which We test them: but the provision of thy Lord is better and more enduring.” [Surat 20 Taha, Verse 131]

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said what means: “Riches does not mean, having a great amount of property, but riches is self-contentment.” (Sahih Bukhari, Book #76, Hadith #453)

The above clearly demonstrates that contentment should be related to the dunya (life) matters and can be reconciled with being ambitious in this life.

The following hadith narrated from Abu Hurayrah (May Allah be pleased with him) expresses this balance between ambition and contentment succinctly:

“People say that I have narrated many Hadiths (the Prophet’s narrations). Had it not been for two verses in the Qur’an, I would not have narrated a single Hadith, and the verses are: “Verily those who conceal the clear sign and the guidance which We have sent down.. (up to) Most Merciful.” (2:159-160). And no doubt our Muhajir (emigrant) brothers used to be busy in the market with their business (bargains) and our Ansari brothers used to be busy with their property (agriculture). But I (Abu Huraira) used to stick to Allah’s Apostle, content with what will fill my stomach and I used to attend that which they used not to attend and I used to memorize that which they used not to memorize.” (Book #3, Hadith #118)

This example of Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) shows that he was ambitious enough to memorize the ahadith (sayings) of the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him), yet he was also content with his restricted provision in this world.

So in summary, to resolve the dilemma is as follows:Be content with your provision in this dunya (life). But be ambitious about your akhirah (after-life) and never be complacent about your good deeds done for Allah. Aim to achieve more in order to please Allah, in your own practice of Islam and in your service to the ummah (society)– strive for more sincerity, quality and quantity.

“DON’T BE AFRAID TO BE AMBITIOUS FOR

OUR UMMAH IN THIS DUNYA,

AND FOR YOURSELF IN THE AKHIRAH.”

GLAMPINGThe Luxurious OutdoorsInhaling the refreshing piney scent, feeling the soft mud under our shoes and biting into sweet s’mores, then dealing with strange slimy bugs, humidity, heat and cooking over an open fire… sounds nice at first but perhaps a little too stressful for us full-time urban-dwellers. As modern times progress and less people are used to less than comfortable living conditions, a niche has opened up around the globe for nature lovers who aren’t quite used to nature. Glamping (glamorous camping) is the latest way to enjoy the great outdoors in a cozier way. Check out some of the different and unique ways glamping can be an amazing experience.

1. SAFARI TENTSFor a romantic, out of Africa type atmosphere, check out the safari tents. They are much more spacious than other

accommodations and luxuriously furnished with proper beds and flooring.

5. CARAVANSThe caravan is stationary and is luxuriously furnished with a

kitchen and bathroom. They can also look like anything from a regular VW van to a wooden gypsy-style caravan cart.

3. TREE HOUSESYes, tree houses. What could be cooler than being up there with your friends or family, Swiss Family Robinson style enjoying

the view, with electricity and running water of course.

2. PODS AND CUBESThese futuristic structures take glamping even further and

almost eradicate the rustic feel associated with camping. Some are equipped with wood burning stoves or are coolly built

for stargazing.

4. TIPIS AND YURTSWith a small carbon footprint, tough durable fabric, a central

wooden fire, these are great alternatives to the basic tent. They’re more spacious, safer against the elements and they're

well heated.

SO FOR THIS MONTH I WANT TO SHARE MY PROFESSIONAL OPINION ON THE FOLLOWING: 1-How to lose weight successfully through nutrition, NOT DIET!2-How to eat for performance and maintenance.3-How to eat to gain muscle.

By Jill Calvert

WAIT, THIS IS ALL ABOUT YOUR WEIGHT!

HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT?

Formula- Expend more calories than you consume. Simple? Not so much. Too often I see clients on a severely low calorie diet of as little as 500 calories and are working out two hours a day on the treadmill, (#sigh). WRONG WRONG WRONG! You need to eat the right food and do proper, not excessive exercise.

TIPS

• Track calories, energy over two weeks before changing, then adjust with small changes.• Don’t skip breakfast as this may help with overall reduction in daily calories.• I’ve had clients who were snackers and never consume a proper meal. I often try to set that they eat three meals and two snacks.• Exercise the minimum amount initially. I strongly suggest resistance and metabolic training. Short and intense bursts.• Eat more healthy fats and reduce the amount of sugar they consume. Opt for starchy vegetables over grains and keep fruit for after workouts only.

WHAT DO I EAT?That is a million-dollar question and one that never has the same answer. Before we start I must state that there is a lot of information, research and diets out there today. Yet our population is still getting larger and nutrition based diseases such as diabetes and obesity are rife!

WHY? Well In my opinion a diet is not a long-term choice that you want to be in forever. When a person follows a so called diet they will normally outlive it, then return to their old ways and regain and possibly gain more fat than they started with. It is a slippery slope and a dangerous one as well! But that’s another story.

Dear Destination Readers,As a fitness professional the number one question I get asked by all is…

70 DESTINATION RIYADH

Page 73: DR Issue 9

DESTINATION RIYADH 71

TIPS

• Daily tracking of intake and how your energy was during your training. If you are not gaining muscle and improving then make small adjustments, increase calories and look at your strength-training program.• Consume more whole foods in the form of starchy vegetables such as sweet potato, parsnips and rice after training. I tend not to encourage weight gain powders, however I do think that a protein supplement can aid recovery and performance.• Eat calorie dense foods such as nuts, meats and starchy vegetables as they are higher in calories than lettuce, for example. A lot of salad yes will fill you but will not add quality calories to your daily intake.• Train SMART! Resistance training minimum three times a week, working out the whole body with challenging weights to stimulate muscle growth. Adequate recovery and adequate cardiovascular work. Even though you want to gain weight don’t shy away from cardio, just don’t do it everyday. Try two to three times a week for 30 minutes. Opt for HIT training!

HOW TO EAT FOR PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE?

Formula- Eat adequate calories to support daily functions and training.SO now that you have reached your goal weight and you are very happy with your shape, you want to maintain this. Again this can just be hard especially if you have been a yoyo dieter!

TIPS

• Monthly checks of body fat.• Daily tracking of intake and how your energy was during your training. This is a great tool and one that I do personally. If my energy is low on the same day each week I can go back to my schedule and see why. Maybe my training has been too much in the run up. So I either reduce training or supplement with more food to support and trail this. Bear in mind it is about trial and error. What works for one may not work for another!

HOW TO EAT TO GAIN MUSCLE?

A situation that I’m sure everyone reading wants to be in! Well believe it or not, to successfully gain quality weight is EXTREMELY hard.Formulas for quality weight gain- consume more calories than required and TRAIN SMART.

Page 74: DR Issue 9

72 DESTINATION RIYADH

SO you have heard me say track your intake. There is an application that I recommend called MYFITNESS

PAL. There you can input all food and exercise for the days. It breaks down

your intake in how much carbohydrate fat and protein you consume and you can

also input your exercise. Also you can share it with your friends and Personal

Trainer for added support.

Stay Healthy,

Jill

WHEN I MEET A CLIENT WHO WANTS TO LOSE WEIGHT THIS IS WHAT I HAVE THEM DO:

For one week track and monitor what they normally eat, track the times and how they felt before and after and also how they feel when they are working out. From there I can gauge how many calories they are consuming and where they are getting them. It is also interesting for them to see either how much or little they are eating. Then I will ask them if their weight has stayed the same for a few weeks. If it has then this is my benchmark of how many calories their body is using to maintain their weight.

Their aim is to lose fat. So I initially suggest small changes and reduce calories very little and train SMART. The reason why I aim to make small manageable changes is if you suddenly reduce calories to 500 and exercise seven days a week two hours a day, yes, you will lose a lot of weight, but at some stage it will stall. Why? Because your body got used to it. SO where do you go from there? You have not reached your ideal fat percentage and your muscle mass has dropped. What do you do? You can’t really exercise more or eat less… So in my opinion slow steady steps are key.
