April 6 11am-1pm led by BNC volunteers Have you ever visited a vernal pool in the spring? Learn about these unique and threatened habitats that exist in many areas of Ashtabula county. These seasonal pools are host to several amphibian species, specialized plants and thousands of tiny creatures creating their own food web before they dry up in the summer heat. After, we’ll take a short walk to one of Morgan Swamp's vernal pools and hope to spot some of these rarely seen creatures. May Wildflower Hike Sat. May 4, 12-1:30pm Hike the trails of Morgan Swamp Preserve in search of spring wildflowers with BNC volunteer Chuck Fletcher Planting for Butterflies Sat. May 4, 1:30-2:30pm Join Ben Lutz, one of our native plant garden volunteers, in a discussion about plants that attract butterflies and take home some seeds to plant in your own garden. June Nature Discovery ages 8-12 with adult, 10-12pm led by BNC volunteers June 8, Vernal Pools June 15, Bird Watching June 22, Nature’s Puzzles Explore nature together by registering for one or more of these sessions at BNC. Limit 8 students per session* July The Art of Rearing Caterpillars Sat. July 27, 12-2pm Geauga Park District Naturalist Tami Gingrich has been rearing caterpillars for most of her life. Tami will give a presentation highlighting her unique rearing techniques followed by an up-close look at some live caterpillar species that are found right here in our area. Butterfly Plant Tour Sat. July 27, 1-3pm Take a tour of the nature center’s native plant garden with Ben Lutz, BNC volunteer, to learn which plants will attract butterflies and their larva. July Nature Discovery ages 8-12 with adult, 10-12pm led by BNC volunteers July 13, Animal Tracks July 20, Fishing July 27, Butterflies Explore nature together by registering for one or more of these sessions at BNC. Limit 8 students per session* August Rare Plants of the Grand River Basin Thurs. Aug. 22 7-8pm Join us to hear Dr. James K. Bissell describe some of the rare plants that grow in the Grand River Basin. Dr. Bissell has worked at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History for 48 years, and is currently the Curator of Botany and Director of Natural Areas. September Photo Essay: Hawk Banding Thurs. Sept. 12, 11-12 Learn how raptors are caught and banded through BNC volunteer David Orndoff’s stunning photographs and stories of his experience with a banding crew in New York State. Earth Preparing for Winter Sat. Sept. 21 10am-noon ages 4-7 with adult Children will learn though stories, activities and a short hike how the earth is getting ready for the cold months ahead. Dress for the weather. Led by BNC volunteers. Limit 8 children* October Bat Myths Busted! Sat. Oct. 12, 10am-noon Just in time for Halloween, join Jacqueline Bilello and volunteers to learn the truth about various bat myths. Then build a bat box to take home so you can start reaping the benefits of bats in your own backyard. Be sure to preregister so we will have materials for you to build your bat box - one box per family. Limit 15 families* October Animals Preparing for Winter Sat.
