– Started in November 1976, as pilot project.

– Confined to Nowshera and Peshawar.

– Expanded to hospitals DHQ/AHQ).

– Initially for controlling 5 diseases and now

Immunization against 8 diseases

– Now operational in most of the union councils

of the province

– Converted to the regular budget since 1996.

General Objectives Reduction of mortality and morbidity resulting from

EPI target diseases by immunizing children under 1-2 year and pregnant women.

Specific objectives. Stop indigenous poliovirus transmission Elimination of Neo-Natal Tetanus, by the year 2010. Reduction in Measles mortality by 95 % and Measles

morbidity by 90% by 2011. Reduction of Diphtheria, Pertussis, Hepatitis B, and

Childhood Tuberculosis ,HIB, Meningitis to a minimum level.

Control of other diseases by introducing new vaccines in EPI.
