Mission
The designations employed and the presentation of material in the maps do not imply the expression of any opinion whatsoever on the part of FAO concerning
the legal or constitutional status of any country, territory or sea area, or concerning the delimitation of frontiers. South Sudan declared its independence on July
9, 2011. Due to data availability, the assessment presented in the map for Sudan and South Sudan reflects the situation up to 2011 for the former Sudan.

Biopesticides are certain types of pesticides derived from
natural materials such as animals, plants, bacteria, and certain
minerals - Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
• Microbial - micro-organism (fungi, bacteria, viruses &
protozoa)
• Biochemical - Plant extracts, pheromones, soaps and fatty
acids, natural plant growth regulators (PGR) Avermectin,
Pyrethrins, Spinocid from natural products but not
biopesticides
• Natural enemies - Parasitoids, predators & pathogens of
pests
• Plant incorporated protectants - pesticide substances
produced by plants containing added genetic material
What are Biopesticides?
➢ EU regulations are driving change -
insecticides withdrawn from the market
(Imidacloprid, 2013; Chlorpyrifos, 2015)
➢ EU directives – reduced use of
pesticide and promotion of biologically
based approach as a part of
integrated pest management
➢ Pests and diseases are developing
resistance to current pesticides
➢ Consumers demands for organic good
➢ Pesticides are harmful to human health
- cancers, tumors, birth defects -
and the environment
Toxic pesticides – insect resistance and human health issues
