What is a Novel? A novel is a long form of a story, which has characters and actions. It is presented in the form of a plot

(Beginning - Climax - Denouement).

Elements of Literature

4

4

1. Author’s Purpose:

There are four basic reasons an author might choose to write:

A. to explain or inform

B. to entertain

C. to persuade

D. to enlighten or reveal an important truth

2. Setting:

-The story setting is where and when the events take place.

3. Characters:

-A character is a person, an animal, or an imaginary creature that takes

part in the action of a story.

4. Plot:

-Plot is the action of a story. It is the series of related events that the

author describes from the beginning of the story to the end. Most plots

follow a chronological order. In other words, they proceed in the order in

which the events happen.

5

5

5. Point of View:

*First-person Point of View: in the first-person point of view, the story

is told by one of the characters. The character uses pronouns such as “I”

or “we” and usually participates in much of the action.

* Third-person Point of View: in the third-person point of view, the story

is told by a narrator who is not a character in the story. (Pronouns such

as “she”, “he”, and “they” are used when writing in third-person point of

view)

6. Theme:

A writer’s message, or main point, is the theme of his or her literary

work. Looking for a theme helps you look more deeply into the literature

and makes for more enjoyable reading.

-Entertainment is the most common purpose, and this type of novel that

seeks entertainment includes stories of adventure, detective stories and

stories of mystery.

-Our Novel this year “David Copperfield “is written by one

of the greatest novelists in the world “Charles Dickens”.

**Who is Charles Dickens?

• Charles Dickens was a famous

British novelist, perhaps

best known for works such as

"David Copperfield”,

“A Christmas Carol”,

“A Tale of Two Cities” and “Great Expectations”.

• He was born on 7 February 1812; Dickens was heavily influenced by his

own difficult childhood.

• Charles was born in England. His father was John, and his mother was

Elizabeth.

• Charles Dickens was only 12 years old when his father went to prison.

• Charles went to work at a factory to support his family.

• At age 22, Dickens joined London newspaper as a journalist, publishing

articles in the Monthly Magazine.

• Dickens became known for his themes of social injustice and poverty.

• Dickens wrote about “David Copperfield”, his eighth novel, “Of all my

books I like this the best”

• “David Copperfield” is largely autobiographical.

(Analysis of characters) (David Copperfield) (honest/ well-educated / helpful / secretive) When he was young, he faced some problems and misfortune that affected his life later.

(Clara Copperfield)

(weak / hesitant /selfish /peaceful / passionate)

She was David’s mother. When she became a widow,

She decided to have a new husband. Her selfishness

destroyed her and her son’s hopes to have a peaceful life

together.

(Aunt Betsey)

(strict but kind / sharp tongue but full of emotions)

The most important character in the novel. She was a great

support to David as she managed to provide him with the family

that he was looking for all his life. She couldn’t accept the idea of

having a nephew but she admitted at the end of the novel. David was

considered to her the most precious gift from God that she was offered

one day.

8

8

(Peggotty)

She was Clara’s servant but at the same time, She raised David up with her. After Clara’s death She got married and left the Rookery.

spend money foolishly. He was sent to prison because

he was not able to pay his debts. Frankly speaking, he

was a great help to David through his whole life.

Mr.Murdstone: (cruel / greedy / rough)
