This year, the Foundation awarded four scholarships, Those receiving financial assistance this year are: Sarah Blevins, Coleman Scott, Brian Tramontin and Elizabeth Tramontin. We are proud of our young people and grateful for the opportunity to assist them in their educational pursuits. Congratulations to all! On Sunday, June 5, we will be honoring our young people who are graduating from high school, college or a trade school. It is a special time for each of them as they go through all the pre- graduation activities and ceremonies. This is a time of appropriate pride, and not just for the graduate. Parents, especially can take pride in the accomplishments of their children. In some cases, it will mean that the "nest is emptying," but for others it may mean the nest is being refilled! Either way, parents are going through many of the same emotions as their now young adult child. I think education is important. That should surprise no one who knows how many years I have spent in institutions of higher education. With manufacturing jobs on the decline and the service industry being a rather low paying proposition, having the right education is more important than ever. In my mind, a liberal arts education is a good investment. While it may not bring all the technical training that one may need, it does engage the learner in using their minds in creative problem solving ways. There is only one thing that they can't "take away," and that's our education - what we have learned and what we know. Christian education is also critically important. If one engages with passion and consistency, one will be offered the opportunity to confront every compelling issue of the day, for there is nothing that goes on in this world that does not have moral and spiritual implications. It is easy to leave one's faith and moral radar at the door of the church. It takes work to carry it each and every day. Perhaps Jesus was tuned in when he asked us to take up our cross. Could anything be more arduous? But the truth is, that being faith-full, when faced with a faith-less situation is the only way to successfully navigate. Once again, "they" can't take away our education - what we have learned and what we know. Summer is upon us. I'd like to say that things slow down, but I'm not certain that's true! What I do know, is Faith Formation continues right through the warm months. Every Sunday from 9:30 - 10:30 classes meet and our faith is enriched. Every week we talk about what seems real and what is real. If you are looking for answers, you may be surprised, that rather than answers you discover partners who are often asking the very same questions. Just knowing you aren't the only one can be a life transforming discovery. Yes, I do believe education is critically important. I hope you are engaged in "Higher" education. If not, there is no better time to start.
