Overview of Elk Grove Unified School District

We serve a large community EGUSD is the largest school district in Northern California and the fifth

largest in the state. The District covers 320 square miles that reach into Sacramento County and

the cities of Elk Grove, Sacramento, and Rancho Cordova. We currently serve more than 62,000 students in grades K-12. We serve 39 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, 9* high schools, 5

alternative schools, 1 special education school, and 1 adult education. More than 70 different languages are spoken in our District.

Bold Goals for Academic Success All students will be proficient or advanced in core academic studies. All students will pass the California High School Exit Exam. All students will be ready for college and careers upon graduation.

EGUSD Bold Goals

100% of students will be, at a minimum, “proficient” as measured by the California Standards Test (CST).

100% of 12th graders will pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).

100% of students will be college or career ready.

In 2006-2007, EGUSD augmented the Bold Goals with specific student performance targets to ensure that students have access to Career Technical Education (CTE) programs to enhance their

education.

The student performance targets include: In terms of the College and Career Bold Goals, the District has set a student performance target:

30% of eligible students will participate in career academies, pathways and/or ROP programs.

Eligible career academy and pathway students are those in grades 9-12. Eligible ROP students are those in grades 10-12.

Career Academy and Pathway Programs

To reach these student performance targets, the Board of Education and Superintendent Ladd worked collaboratively with staff to establish criteria that would establish and expand the District’s CTE programs. This work culminated in the following:

Academy Certification: District academies are certified on a yearly basis using the National Standards of Evaluation Protocol for Career Academies. This certification is validated by outside evaluators from the Senate Office of Education and the California Department of Education.

Since December 2004, seven of the District’s fourteen academies have been certified. As a result, all District academies seek certification.

College/Career Task Force: In 2005, the District’s College/Career Task Force recommended the following:

EGUSD will engage all 4th – 12th grade students in an exploration, planning, and goal setting process that results in graduation and career plans that are monitored by supportive educators and parents/guardians.

EGUSD had fourteen career academies and eight career pathways located at nine* high schools.

Career Academy and Pathway Programs are designed and aligned to small learning community criteria.

Career Pathways A career pathway is a recommended sequence of general and career technical courses related to a

career focus area. Career Academies

A four-year sequenced integrated curriculum which includes three academic, and one career technical education subject area.

The EGUSD Board of Education certifies the career academies. Both Career Academy and Pathway Programs includes:

Ford PAS Program Vision for EGUSD The EGUSD Board of Education, Superintendent, and CTE/career

academy staff believe implementation of the Ford PAS program will increase students’ understanding of post-secondary and career opportunities as well as infuse project-based learning throughout the curriculum.

The Ford PAS program is a standards-based curriculum that is rigorous with applied performance-based projects that prepare students for the challenging 21st century workplace.

The implementation of the Ford PAS program within the District’s career academies and CTE courses will assist the District in achieving its Bold Goals performance targets in highlighting relevance and rigor.

The EGUSD is so committed to the Ford PAS program curriculum model, it is positioned to become a regional and subsequently Western state training center.

To ensure District-wide implementation, career academy instructors were invited to attend:

Professional Development Institute and Business & Entrepreneurship, Ypsilanti, Michigan

Foundations Mini-Institute and Business Partner Sites, Palm Springs, California

Training for Professional Development Providers, Dearborn, Michigan

To date, over 35 career academy and CTE teachers have been trained to implement Ford PAS

The District sponsored a Ford PAS training April 9-10, 2008. 29 District career academy and CTE staff and 3 principals attended.

EGUSD Ford PAS Implementation

The Ford PAS curriculum is academically rigorous and relevant and is an asset in assisting the District’s CTE and career academy programs in meeting the District’s Bold Goals and student performance targets.

The Ford PAS implementation model has the full support of the District’s Board of Education, Superintendent, and District career academy, and CTE staff.

The applied academic curriculum is rigorous and provides the District’s academy programs with a series of performance-based projects that enhance existing curriculum.

Ford Pas Implementation has been successful in EGUSD for several reasons:

The District’s Ford PAS program implementation is “grass roots” in nature. Career academy and CTE staff determines his/her level of involvement (i.e., workshop presenter or classroom visitation training provider). The module implementation is determined by each academy and is modified to fit the career academy focus.

The District has many CTE and career academy staff who have been recognized on a local, regional, and state level, as being leaders in providing high quality, rigorous programs. The Ford PAS curriculum modules offer them another vehicle to move their academies to the next level.

Next Steps:

EGUSD will continue to build professional development capacity. A cadre of trainers will continue to be identified and added to the existing professional training team.

The existing Business Education Technology Academy will revise it’s current career academy curriculum to encompass a full Ford PAS career academy program implementation.

The Manufacturing Production Technology Academy will pilot the math-related modules, Planning for Business Success, and Calculating Your Future: Planning for Financial Success.

The District will continue to infuse Ford PAS curriculum into Alternative Education schools as well into as academic subject areas.

Next Steps (cont’d):

The District’s career academy teachers will continue to pilot all Ford PAS modules.

The District will conduct local and regional Ford PAS trainings for the 2008-2009 school year.
