dr. strange - dealing with an arrogant person at work
TRANSCRIPT
Arrogance is defined as : “an attitude of superiority manifested in an
overbearing manner or in presumptuous claims or assumptions”.
Often, an arrogant person will exert themselves by undermining and
humiliating others, and such approach can reduce our department
performance affecting negatively our working environment, as well.
Separate yourself from the situation
Keep in mind that being arrogant is a self-destructive behavior that will affect the arrogant coworker, not you! Based on such idea it is easier
to rationalize, getting out of such negative relationship, reducing the level of stress caused by
him.
Improve your Listening Skills
Use such negative encounter as an opportunity to improve your listening skills or tolerance. Try and
ignore anything that they say or how they act, and they will probably stop bothering you
eventually.
Don’t be afraid of confrontations
As soon as someone tries to force their opinion on you, let them know politely and
firmly that that’s not going to happen.
Build up your own confidence
It is important to develop self-confidence through training, support and common sense to face difficult coworkers. Being
prepared means a considerable reduction in our stress level when dealing with such
nasty people.
Make your move
If you’re dealing with a problem person at work, you probably need to take action. You
need to let the offending coworker know you’re aware of their behavior and are
willing to take it to someone higher in the chain of command if needed.
Remember you are there to work
Unfortunately, we are not going to like everyone at work. So be respectful and
professional and don’t let the attitudes of those who don’t matter get to you.
